Izzo: "I need time to sit and look at everything" and "I'm not retiring"

Submitted by Piston Blue on

Looks like Dantonio and Izzo are doubling down. We'll see how this plays out over the next few weeks/months.

..and I’m not sticking up for them, but it may take them a minute. Their entire AD is on fire, including 2 “legendary” coaches that they idolize. They’ve been worshipping them for years, it’ll take more than a day for them to turn on them.

Certainly been an eventful week.

Dantonio was defiant. Izzo looked beaten. Before the season, many of my Spartan insider friends thought this was Izzo’s last year. He turned down the Cavs offer because his daughter was still in her teens. She has graduated from MSU & he was going to stay this year to give it one last shot at an NCAA title with his allegedly most talented team. Now, he may stay just so it doesn’t look like he was forced out. Dantonio took a big risk today. He better be telling the truth or this statement will be his demise. Though, I wish he’d stick around so Spartans have no excuse when we kick their ass in EL this year. State will bring in a total outsider for President. Someone who will immediately deemphasize athletics at MSU. MSU’s days as a major athletic power are over. Once the Feds & NCAA get done with them, they will be the equivalent of a mid major. I’m sick of reading this tired argument that we shouldn’t take “glee” from what’s going on up there at Moo U. If it turns out Mark D’s defiant statement is untrue, I will celebrate his demise like I did when Nixon resigned & JoePa got fired. Bringing down those who are in positions of power & leadership, especially those in charge of young people who are exposed for the vermin they really are should be celebrated. Proud 1976 Michigan alum & father of Michigan alum daughter class of 2013.

Anyone else catch at the end of the game when Brando mentioned Payne and Lacey? I got sick to my stomach and had to leave the room so my Sparty wife didn’t see my absolute disgust.

Don't investigations take forever? It felt like that with North Carolina and their academic scandal before they finally received their slap on the wrist. Part of me feels by the time anything could be conclusively proven through an investigation, either coach will have reached retirement anyway. We'll have to wait and see what happens. It's hard for me to grasp either coach not being untouchable. In the meantime, Sparty fans right now have got to be pissed. Good.

Dantonio, not so much - yet.

Fandom and winning seasons only gets you only so far. Sexual abuse is an ongoing global pandemic. Every wrong move or statement by someone tied to this at MSU is going to get served wrath. Anyone who falls on their sword is going to get some measure of grace.

Any words other than, "I'm sorry - goodbye", simply isn't going to cut it any more. Wait and see.

On a non-MSU note, I'm recalling a case a few years back where a B10 football player was accused of rape and the victim had reported it to the football coaches.  They sent some assistants over to clean up the crime scene including throwing out some bloody sheets.  And so there was no prosecution due to a supposed lack of evidence.

Anyone remember this?  I can't remember which school it was.

According to the ESPN story, they are reporting 16 football players accused of sexual assault over 11 years. I would like to see how 1.5 players per year, on a team with 100 elite-ish athletes, compares to the rest of football/basketball programs. If I had to guess I would say it would be similar to the national average, which means the football program should not get swept up in the nassar whirlwind.

I can't stand sparty as much as any body but this is the true reality.  I'm guessing its more than 1.5 players per year at any given school.  We are delusional if we think we can cast ANY stones.  The whole situation is tough to watch unfold through the media eyes but if the 16 players over 11 years is true, that is barely anything... relatively speaking.  Izzo and Dantonio don't deserve to leave based on just this fact alone.  We shall see if anything else comes out.

The issue isn’t the number of players committing these crimes (although we could argue that point as well). The issue is a culture of coverup and enabling this behavior. I’m quite comfortable casting stones at any university that creates this culture, especially if it were U of M.

Izzo and Mork are most likely being directed by the useless BoT to maintain MSU's last dying bit of relevance-hence the shoulder chippiness not retiring attitude.  If both of those coaches depart, MSU has nothing, and I think that is their greatest fear.

I hope both of those ugly, nasty little men go down hard. They and that whole institution disgusts me. I am just so glad we beat them in basketball this year.

Dantonio is a despicable human being.

So are those of you defending them with this is normal BS.

If every campus is as corrupt as MSU in this regard, then burn them all down.

After digesting all this, I would expect Izzo and Dantonio both to dig in rather than own up to any bad judgment at this point, and indeed it will be interesting to see if more comes out on what occurred earlier in their watch over revenue programs on the OTL on Sunday, as I think we're getting another batch of stories then.

What I am curious about right now is how long what remains of MSU's top administrative and athletic brass wants to ride the incredibly bad optics (on top of everything else) of these revelations and their own responses to them. How long do they think they can afford to do this?

What Always happens is that the crime starts out very small and the criminal digs such a deep hole of lies over time, and has so many lies to cover up that the hole expands exponentially until it becomes absurd. that is what has happened here.

Wow. Last night the Magic waived Adrienne Payne and the Clippers fired Travis Walton MSU ex Player/ Izzo Asst who raped and punched women but never missed a day of work under Tom Izzo.

Izzo says ...not sure they got the right guy. Maybe a freudian slip?

No way Izzo will survive beyond this season and he will never work in media again. Guy is toast.

I’m sure the new AD will see things differently. They are said to be hiring outside of MSU. People have been negative on my posts but I’ve been pretty on so far. I can’t say too much but I had a family member that was part of the MSU basketball family through marriage. All I can insure is that it’s way worse than what you saw yesterday. It’s been out of control for a long time and the football program is in the same boat. It’s a dangerous environment and change has to be made.

Another article on Yahoo saying Izzo needs to provide more answers. Hopefully the media can keep the pressure on.

I don't remember which media person hung this tag on Dantonio but he has used it to his advantage to continue to foster a perception which has insulated him from deserved criticism for his handling of player wrong-doing for years. I think that is finally coming to an end.

Their strongest allies, president and athletic director are gone. The BOT has zero credibility and political capital. Many of the big contributors, those with businesses and reputations to protect, won’t want to be associated with them.

It sounds like they will bring in a new president from outside the school who will be tasked with restoring the schools reputation and finding a way to move past this. It seems like step one would be get rid of anyone with any connection to a previous sexual abuse/assault/misconduct scandal.

Why would someone take the president job if the have to start off by defending Izzo and Dantonio?
