Actually a pretty funny but still paranoid take from Eleven Warriors on the current situation. Watch their dramatic re-enactment video embed especially if you like the movie Little Giants.

They are trying to put on a brave face but from the tone of the article it still sounds like they are afraid. They claim that we secretly want to be them.

That was some masterful writing from them.  Many lols were to be had.

I give them a hearty "well done!"

Thanks for posting a link to it.

Feel like this story nailed it. I've been thinking about how much crazy stuff has happened with Michigan football the past few years from Gattis and Weiss to Burger gate and now Special Ops Stalions.

Thanks 11warriors for providing some clarity. Harbaugh & company decided a couple years ago they were sick of losing to the bucknuts and were ready to get serious. This is college football and the crazy crap is the cost of being a powerhouse. If anything, we can feel good about gun possession being the most serious legal charge, very tame compared to what's happened on other campuses.

If you're enjoying this era of Michigan football, the proper response to the "spying scandal" is a shoulder shrug. They're not canceling the Mich-OSU state game. Life will go on

There's an analyst from OSU who goes to games of opponent teams to read signs as well. I wonder why the NCAA is not going after OSU. I think I know why.

Yup, this "Ohio State does the same thing" feels like bad cringe from Michigan twitter idiots who haven't accepted that a Michigan staffer went 1 step further than everybody else.  If there does end up being any truth to it, it would be hilarious, but I won't hold my breath that any of it is noteworthy

The tone of the article that I got is that we are hypocrites, that we are guilty as charged, and that they are smugly enjoying all of this.  Then the last sentence claims that we have finally reached our goal - to become OSU.

Because Michigan football, which is now as successful and scandal-ridden as every other big time program, has finally become who they really wanted to be all along: Ohio State.

That is actually a pretty good take from them.

Michigan has always prided itself on following the rules, even the "55 mph" rules that nobody cares about, that are never adhered to and never enforced.

Everyone else is blissfully driving 95 mph while the cops eat donuts, while we insist on going 55 mph because THAT'S THE RULE.

But then we don't actually drive 55 mph.  We drive 65 mph.  We sort of half-assed cheat but not fully cheat so we can claim a moral high ground . . . while still doing some cheating.

People think the gang up on Michigan is just because we are good now or Harbaugh annoys them.  That's all true, but the main reason is that Michigan has always been so sanctimonious in an environment - big time college football - that is down-in-the-dirt and always has been.

Nobody is at all outraged by the silly infractions we have committed.  They commit them too.  They just want to point and laugh and say: "Stop preaching, you're one of us too."

Except that this is false equivalence and, really, that's what most Michigan fans are irritated by. Harbaugh buying a cheeseburger and not respecting the authoritae of the NCAA - OMG, they're cheating!

The whole breathless cacophony of "sign stealing" is just garbage for anyone who plays sports or knows the game. It's not the Astros. It's not the Patriots filming practices. Every team thinks their signs are stolen, which is why for literally decades coaches would have multiple people calling in signs, running in plays, or various other techniques.

When you're at the top, you get more scrutiny. This shit is the best they could find? Is it <gasp> cheating? Maybe. And maybe Michigan fans are hypocrites and no one cares for a holier than thou fan bases. But it's ridiculous to falsely equate what may have transpired with other real scandals at other programs.

"... Michigan has always been so sanctimonious ..."

Pardon my ignorance, but when is the last period when that type of thing was happening frequently? It never happens in my Michigan football social circle.

I can remember hearing multiple stories 30+ years ago in South Quad about guys getting paid and having summer jobs where they didn't have to spend more than a few minutes onsite. I can't imagine they were all made up. You can find similar tales in "If I Don't Six."

That's saying I've personally never held Michigan too far above other schools. (I have always assumed OSU is worse because it all means more to the Bucknuts.) I don't know anyone that does.

Is it possible that this "Michigan is sanctimonious" idea doesn't fully map to reality? I'm making the suggestion that it's a media mind@$#% to some degree.

Are you kidding? When was the last time it happened? This week?

Michigan has been this way since Bo. It's one of the reasons I chose Michigan over MSU back in the day. I didn't go to either. I loved Bo's attitude of "we are going to follow the rules AND beat your ass too, because we are just that much better than you".

It doesn't bother me we've started doing some of the shader things at all. We still adhere to rules no one else bothers to. Maybe not the 55 mph one, but certainly no more than 5 over.

October 25th, 2023 at 10:35 AM ^

Nope, definitely not kidding.

I don't think we've "started doing some of the shadier things." I believe we've been doing them -- to some degree [1] -- for a very long time. I think it's naive to assume otherwise.

Who knows? We might just choose friends and acquaintances differently. I haven't talked to anyone who has taken the "This upsets me because I believe Michigan is on a higher moral plane" path. If anyone's upset, it's because there's an appearance of sloppiness on Michigan's part. I'll wait and see if other schools have their dirt unearthed.

[1] Again, not necessarily to an Alabama or OSU degree.

I don’t agree with your last paragraph. In fact it is the outrage from mainstream media types (and thus, rival fanbases) over what appears to be a relatively minor infraction that is the most annoying part of this.  Especially compared to their response to programs that have acquired players via illegal means which is much more impactful than advanced scouting. They make it sound like this is the crime of the century run by a massive criminal operation.

Ohio State fans would have you believe that this is worse than Georgia or Brian Kelly literally getting people killed.  In the grand scheme of things, this is probably one of the least scandalous scandals you can find.  People are just up in arms because of Michigan's "holier than thou" persona, which I've always thought was dumb and just sets us up for extra vitriol when it turns out we're just like everybody

I agree the sanctimony was always going to end with a fall, but that's true with every program.  Notre Dame trotted out "Catholics vs. Convicts" when playing Miami, which is some king-level dog whistling, and yet had to adjust down 2 whole seasons for playing multiple players who cheated through classes.  They also had a head coach who, at best, was indifferent toward safe procedures that led to a kid being killed.  Lou Holtz was by many stories a complete piece of shit who cheated as much as anyone, yet got away with it.  And yet, at least in my dealings ND fans are just as full of themselves and overly moralistic as anyone.

Read OSU blogs and you'll see them talk about how they're doing sports right, how they're winning because Ryan Day is a genius and people sign up to play for a winner.  OSU was called "SEC North" forever and yet Day is whining about not having NIL money to compete.  Mark Dantonio talked about toughness and doing things the right way...and then pulled guys out of lockup to play a game and tried very hard to ignore guns, assaults, etc. that would limit his team's ability to play on the field.   I brought this up elsewhere but Nick Fucking Saban and Jimbo Fucking Fisher got into a whiny match in the media over the fact A&M "bought" their roster as opposed to the Tide.

Yes, Michigan has an arrogance around them but so does everyone else.  People talk about being fine with being seen as a "villain" but then freak out when that perception sticks.  Michigan is still driving 70 in a 55 but that's more because the speed limit should be 70.

Makes me wonder..was 11W ever intended to be a respectable site?  Ramzy has written some good stuff (his last piece after Michigan beat OSU last year was fantastic)  but he's also kinda childish and petty. And the quality of the articles over the years has been very rah rah and I wonder if the lack of intelligence from the fans has caused the writers to just give them what they want/can digest.

I wonder what they’ll blame for getting blasted off the field this year? Can’t be sign stealing since you already should “know” about that. Maybe steroids? Idk what else? What mental gymnastics are they gonna do to find a reason other than: Michigan is just better than you. In almost every facet of the game. Can’t realize that, so there will be something. Curious what it’ll be.

Only two things really concern me about OSU this year:

1) How much better is their defense actually? Seems pretty damn good but I don’t know yet if we know exactly how good. The offenses they’ve played have ranged anywhere from terrible to “ehhh they’re okay.” To be fair, same can be asked if Michigan given the level of competition.

2) Marvin Harrison Jr. Guy is a freak of  nature and could probably beat just about any team in the country by himself if he has a Heisman-worthy day. He’s going to catch at least 1-2 balls against Michigan that will make us all want to throw shit at our TV and vomit with rage, but I hope Michigan can bring the kind of gameplan to at least make sure that’s not the difference in the game. Make literally anyone else beat you. OSU has some damn good receivers but no one close to MHJ.

Their defensive backfield might be playing better than the squad from 2022 but their offense is hot garbage. The D will only hold up against UM for so long.

3.8 yards per carry on the season. Their ground game is almost a full 2 yards per carry worse than it was last year. I just don't see any team that has valmorphanized into being totally, completely one-dimensional (and their one dimension is wildly inconsistent this year) rolling into AA and beating Michigan.

I decided that it was ok for my account to be nuked over there through downvotes, so I posted the following, which hits directly on your point about all of this being based upon their fear of what is coming up.  They know they try to steal signals.  They know they cheat too.  They just can't live with losing for the last two years.

[OSU Commenter]  This has been better than Christmas. More and more coming out, the denial, the hypocrisy... everything. Reveling in your hated rivals shit storm. Makes college sports fandom worth it.

It's good to see OSU fans finally happy.  It's been a bleak 3 years, hasn't it?  Honestly, I'll admit I didn't realize just how bleak.  Perhaps because you've been on top for so long, the adjustment to losing, repeatedly, is just too much.

But no longer!.  Now it all makes sense!  Now there's an explanation!  Finally, you have a plausible excuse for dropping two games to the one team on the planet that you just can't stand losing to.  Michigan cheats!  My team isn't inferior!  They cheated!  Your wildest hope, your most fervent prayer has been answered!  Now your team doesn't have to look in the mirror and feel inadequate.  Now you as fans don't have to have your precious feelings hurt by acknowledging that another team out-worked you two years in a row.  Now you don't have to blame it on the flu, the weather, the sunshine, five measly plays, that threatened your precious perch upon the throne of the B1G.

Now you have an excuse for when it happens again.  Snuggle up in your self-righteousness.  November is cold in Ann Arbor.

I always wondered what Georgia would look like if they started playing by the same rules as the rest of the SEC, post Mark Richt.  Now we know, and it is fearsome.

Teams like Ohio State are scared to death about what Michigan would look like if they start playing by OSU's rules.

Stalions' vast network of saboteurs, which includes his mom, a neighbor, and some guy named Pokey, are then given fifty bucks to go to Big Ten games and record playcalls and signs.

This part may turn out to be quite accurate - lol

Didn't OSU change their signs?

Also, for Connor to continue this scheme it means that either he or some entity found it fruitful enough to continue.

Given how juvenile this operation was, I'm sure we will have more information soon.

They did. Rational posters were even more disgusted by the beatdown, while the mutton chops posters are convinced that you couldn’t change all the signs that fast, and that we still cheated. I don’t care If urban stole our entire playbook back n the day. It wouldn’t have changed a thing about final score and the ass beating we took. Superior talent kicked our ass, not cheating.

I am beginning to think this is the real advantage the sign-stealing bit may have conferred. As many experts have explained, even a highly-successful sign-stealing operation might enable you to figure out the opponent’s likely playcall two or three times in a game—and even then you likely had other clues by which you’d have been able to mostly figure it out anyway. But if you can get a team to change its signals, now you are causing them to spend valuable preparation time doing that instead of working on other things, and possibly increasing the chances of opposing players getting confused or mistaking the new signs for the old ones, etc.

So perhaps Day actually played himself by changing up his signals before The Game last season?
