DL Coach Rumblings - Board Thoughts?
Like most of the board, I have been searching for rumblings about a new DL coach after Scruggs's resignation. I hope it is a position that can be filled quickly, but the timing is definitely less than ideal.
A few names have popped up.
- Larry Johnson /s /s /s
Listening to Sherrone's comments during yesterday's spring interview was also very interesting. "All hands on deck" for coaching the D-line until a coach is in place.
What other names are on the board?
If you are Sherrone, who are you targeting?
Jamison all day. His brother played at Michigan and he coached Newton to big ten defensive player of the year this year. Illinois isn't exactly a recruiting powerhouse either so he identifies talent in a way that works with what we already do.
This is where I'm at, too. Most obvious candidate and we can definitely outbid Bert
But, but, but, FamILLy? /s
Honestly after Bert tried to virtue signal after Sign-Gate, talking about how “disgusting” he thought it was, I’m all for taking members of his staff if they’re any good. Not ashamed to admit that I’d do it out of pure spite as well.
Was it even signaling virtue or was Bert just a hungry hog rushing the slop trough?
There's a difference?
“Hog, slop, trough”? That’s called a Monday for Bert.
Tell me more about Coach Rumblings... is he a good recruiter? Does he have a hot wife?
Yeah, the only thing with Jamison is he's co-DC at Illinois and if that's not just an honorific he might not want to go back to "just" a DL coach. But I really like him especially given how well Illinois has been on the line given their talent.
I am guessing Pernell Mcphee. He played linebacker not DL, but his background sounds like someone they added as an analyst to transition to an on-field coach. We'll see.
That may be the path for him eventually (analyst to on-field) but I'd prefer we get an experienced DL coach now.
This is the correct path. We get him working with our guys already. Let's get an experienced coach, to help develop our players, but also teach McPhee the full responsibilities of being fully in charge of a position group.
Defending National Champions with the best DL in 2024. Hiring an analyst with no coaching experience makes zero sense. We'll see...
I think we would see an internal promotion like McPhee if this happened in Fall camp or later. But once Spring practices are over, there should be opportunities to snag a good proven coach. We saw Moore's approach to filling Hart's role and it wasn't to promote Denard like many of us expected.
FWIW, McPhee was a DE in college and early in his NFL career before switching to OLB.
I agree with the above poster, though. If it were fall camp, promote McPhee. But it’s spring, and Jamison or other high-quality coaches may be available.
Gimme some sweet hot Hoke.
Agree, may be the perfect choice right now.
We know he can coach D-Line, plus I think Hoke would be great as a “stop-gap” and mentor Mcphee until he’s ready to do it.
This would be the best choice IMO. Bring in Hoke as a stop gap for the year, get a new coach after you can take your time and vet one. Hoke is also a legit DL coach, and you're throwing a bone at someone who has been overall generally good to the program.
Everyone brings up Hoke, but would he do it? He's 65 and just retired from coaching while living in San Diego. Mattison coached until he was 70 so I guess it's possible.
Pssshhh, bro, he'd walk here.
+1
Good memory.
Position coach is a lot less work than Coordinator or HC.
I can't imagine a world in which Brady Hoke turns down a chance at partial redemption in Ann Arbor.
That would be a thing of beauty. And with Graham and Grant... he'd look like a stud no matter what for a year.
You get fired from your dream job running a company but about 10 years later they ask you back for a small manager job. You interested in that?
Though your comparison is apt, remember that Michigan football is not just a company.

I would do a lot of things for $500k+ per year
Most people wouldn't take a lesser job at a school where they were formerly head coach.
Brady Hoke is a humble guy. I doubt he needs the money. It's more about if he's up for it and of course if he's even offered a job.
Let's go Brady! . . . Clap, Clap . . Clap, Clap, Clap
Hoke coached the '97 National Championship DL “for God sakes” (sic).
That would be fergodsake. Spelling matters :)
I checked the tape and heard “for God sakes” rather than “for God’s sake”; hence the (sic) notation.
“Tape” ok boomer
I love my DL coaches not wearing a headset and in short sleeves in sub 25 degrees!
Pretty sure he’s retired, but picking up the phone and giving him a call Wouldn’t be the worst idea. He can Coach DL, he can recruit his balls off, and he loves the school.
That said, I wouldn’t blame him if he didn’t want to come back and coach in a “lesser role” for the school that fired him. That takes a level of swallowing your pride that I’m not even sure I’d be able to do.
I appreciate what Hoke did for the ‘97 team. I even appreciate his love for Michigan in his effort as Head Coach.
BUT….I love the culture the team and coaching staff have now. I don’t want Coach Moore to do anything that brings any of the old culture back. Thank goodness that is dead, gone, and buried. Let’s keep it that way.
You converted me over with this statement - Hoke ran a country club here
BUT BUT BUT who then will be wrestling Coach Moore in the locker room???????????
If Hoke would be open to the job, you hire him right now. But I don't see him walking to A2 for that job, not now.
Just make sure he’s fully aware of the opening…………..
I’d like Jamison, but with Moore’s track record he seems to hire coaches he’s worked with or are recommended through association. I wonder if our latest analyst becomes DL coach, but I’d really like Jamison as Illini have had some good lines last few years.
I'm in favor of a series of soft, yet diabolically orchestrated, instances which rapidly make the Elston's determine they hate Los Angeles and want to come home.
Little things as simple as the barista at his local coffee joint suddenly treating him with disdain. Not outright disdain, but dropping little hints that he/she prefers to serve other customers. The coffee tasting like somebody spat in it wouldn't hurt either.
Starbucks always getting his name wrong. Calling him Mark or Mork or Matt on different days, and never Mike. That sort of thing.
Maybe he'll go to the coffee house I went to in L.A. The barista offered me service with either indifference, apathy, or a complete lack of interest.
I said I didn't care.
The fact that you said that implies that you do.
And yes I get the joke.
Larry McDaniel
or
Bill Bellichick.
get it done.
Bill Belichick coaching under Wink Martindale? Won't ever happen but the thought makes me smile.
no it's definitely happening
Jamison seems intriguing. Could we give him a title bump also since he's Co-DC now? Do not want anything to do with Larry Johnson. I would rather not have a coach than him.
I'd assume that the pay increase will ease the title change. Not sure we could offer a Co-DC title with no experience in the system.
Plus coaching this unit at Michigan >>> coaching at ILL. All around better long term move for him.
