I live in Urbana and get a lot of the above. I'll add a couple of things:

Easy to get around either by a great bus system, bike or car. You're always close to anything you need.

Affordable housing, low cost of living in general.

Access to fresh food right off the farm. Pretty good restaurants considering the size of the cities.

All the diversity anfd cultural opportunities of a university.

Pace of life is fairly relaxed. People are friendly and well-mannered.

Hot as Hades now, but pretty moderate winters.

Many Illinois fans still attached to their old racist mascot. The rivalry thing is laughable.

No bodies of water worth mentioning.

06/27/2018 - 10:10am Much of what I would say…

Much of what I would say echoes what others have mentioned. I'll add a couple of things that I have found helpful. Exercise is great for many reasons, and one is that it is something you do entirely for yourself. Sure being healthy allows you to do accomplish much more and be around for family and friends. But for the motivation to get up and at it I always return to the idea that I am spending time helping myself feel better. And although I may go to the gym or take a class or run in a group, ultimately working out is a personal effort where I get my mind and body in a better alignment and I spend some time with myself working on myself. Others can put a lot of demands on us and it's essential to put time aside for yourself.

Meditation is helpful. Not because it trains you to "control your mind." But rather, in understanding that thoughts and worries will come and go. A metaphor I picked up that I like to share is: "watch the parade, but don't march in the parade."

Finally, in the workplace I always try and knock off a few easy tasks first thing. Give yourself a feeling of accomplishment to power you through the rest of the day.

I hope some of this is useful.

05/21/2018 - 3:34pm Agree on grain shovel

Better scooping action, easier to load up a wheelbarrow.

05/14/2018 - 3:08pm Glad to see you kids know about Iggy.

Personally I would synch that to "Search and Destroy."

05/02/2018 - 10:56am Do I remember correctly?

Was there a neon sign that said "Resignation" on the stairs to the bathrooms?

05/02/2018 - 10:52am All time favorite.

Figured it out my senior year. When I moved back to A2 later I deliberately rented close by.

05/02/2018 - 10:48am Big Black's drum machine

blew a fuse and blacked the whole room out.

04/20/2018 - 11:27am Reggae night in the Courtyard!

Thanks for bringing back many happy memories.

03/14/2018 - 3:46pm At the club

he goes by Edwin Burrow.

03/08/2018 - 5:46pm Proposal before Champaign City Council

A developer has a proposal to build a combination hotel-arena in downtown Champaign. The arena would seat approx. 5,000 and could host wrestling and volleyball as well. The location is next to the Bus and Rail terminal making it convenient to campus. Illinois has a pretty good club program. The problem is that the existing campus ice arena is small and completely surrounded by academic buildings with no parking. As an Urbana resident I would love the opportunity to see Michigan play here. The real challenge is for the Illinois Athletic Dept. to find donors to pony up for the expense of a new varsity team and another women's team.

02/28/2018 - 11:11am I live in Urbana...

so I'd prefer the dismemberment of the Illini. It would put an extra spring in my step.

09/27/2017 - 8:45am Only a flesh wound

You should see the guy in the red shirt.

09/27/2017 - 8:42am Same Dynamic at work for News sites

Yesterday the Columbia Journalism Review had an article on Mic magazine and a similar collapse in viewership. Worth aread for those interested.

09/17/2017 - 10:27am Great New Emo Band

I dunno, I saw a lot of posts about this great new Midwestern Emo band:

Harbaugh Is No Longer a Perfect Coach And I am Afraid of Purdue.

08/28/2017 - 3:36pm Who can resist the power of novelty?

07/08/2017 - 2:31pm House sat for Lieberthal one summer

He was my pal's PhD advisor and he was on Carter's National Security Council if I remember correctly. I'll also tip my chapeau to Bert Hornbeck, who served as chair of the LSA Honors Program when I was in school and hosted one memorable party at his house. I recall seeing a tap near the kitchen sink that went to a keg of Guiness. Most of all I remember the late Frank Grace, who taught Political Theory. I visited his office hours many times and his class and our conversations taught me much.

06/27/2017 - 7:41pm As an Urbana dweller

I've seen the club Illinois hockey team play. The Ice Arena on campus was built in 1931, holds around 1200 and is surrounded by academic buildings with zero available parking. Not really a viable candidate for construction upwards or outwards. The basketball arena just got renovated and although an ice sheet could be installed I don't see how practices could be integrated into existing schedules. A varsity B1G team would get lots of support, the club team has a winning tradition, a great fan section (The Harassing Illini) and as you might expect people here yearn to have some team, any team to cheer for (volleyball is really vocally supported.) If AD Josh Whitman could finagle some long dollars out of the NHL he might be onto something. A plan to renovate Memorial Stadium just got shelved, too.

I also happen to be a native Syracusan (with an MA from SU) and spent my formative years cheering for the EHL Syracuse Blazers at the Onondaga County War Memorial. Where some background scenes were also filmed for "Slapshot," by the by. The arena is less than a mile from campus, close to the highway and the AHL Syracuse Crunch (what a lousy name) play there now.

07/09/2016 - 3:10pm So much this /\

I always wonder if the Alabama equipment manager sends a grad assistant out to Home Depot every August with a blank check and directions to buy a box lot of the number decals by the mailboxes.

06/22/2016 - 6:29pm The link I put up

is to a well-written review with a streaming sample. So take a chance, I guarantee that $75 Guitar are nothing like any other band mentioned on this thead.

06/22/2016 - 6:25pm 75 Dollar Guitar

05/21/2016 - 10:11am Removing the foot

Removing the foot would've been awkward.

05/21/2016 - 8:55am Honk if you hate people, too.

A bumper sticker we made when I worked for a record label. Billy Corgan had one on a guitar. We never got around to making "My other car belongs to my parents, too" stickers.

04/20/2016 - 12:33pm Ditto on Harry's

I like Harry's blades and holder, although I would really like them if there was a trimming blade. I'd also recommend the use of a good pre-shave oil for those with the time. And definitely use a post-shave balm.

02/02/2016 - 11:07am Whether on a coaching or marketing staff...

Jim Harbaugh knows to hire good people and let them work. As a professional in communications, it seems pretty obvious to me that Coach Harbaugh has been paying attention to all kinds of developments and putting some work into marketing. He's surrounding himself with some smart people in that regard.

01/23/2016 - 10:21am Nicely done BiSB

I got my journalism MA from Newhouse, where they told us to "show me, don't tell me." Greenstein has done a lot of telling and very little showing.

01/06/2016 - 10:01am Native Syracusan.

Nice to see Mike Hart (Onondaga Central HS) return to CNY. Along with the hiring of Dino Babers as a Salt City native and MA-holder from SU I have reason to follow the Orange again.

12/11/2015 - 3:51pm OSU

Staff Infection!

11/09/2015 - 5:35pm I'll take Ineffective Motivational Techniques for 100 Alex
From the report:
"The vast majority of players, coaches, and sports medicine staff interviewed dismissed any such notions and reported no concern or even interest in either issue. Instead, witnesses interpreted these motivational tactics as meaningless."
11/06/2015 - 3:09pm How did Brian know

that Cheap Thrills used to be the best record store in New Brunswick, NJ?

11/02/2015 - 12:44pm Obligatory upvote

for Spiderland.

11/02/2015 - 9:15am I'm an Urbana resident

and I can tell you that the t-shirt shop printing Creepy Racist Mascot shirts is also the source of the Muck Fichigan/ Ann Arbor is a Whore shirts, too. The "rivalry" notion is strongest in the Greek community and embittered locals who never got over losing the aforementioned creepy mascot.  Most University staff and academics chuckle when the topic of a rivalry comes up. A huge percentage of students here are international and really don't give a hoot.

10/06/2015 - 3:16pm Seriously: Wilco is Dad Rock.

Or maybe Vest Rock. The two overlap.

09/03/2015 - 2:58pm Nice to have you back in both booths CJ Grape
My wife and I moved to Urbana recently. We still still listen to WFMT every weekday morning (and most of the weekend, obviously).

08/25/2015 - 10:52am WCBN FM 88.3

There is and it kicks ass. In a freeform way, of course.

08/23/2015 - 9:18am Fresh ground Espresso!

At last! Thanks for initiating a coffee discussion 901P. I grind espresso in a burr grinder and brew with a Bialetti stove top espresso maker. I live in Urbana, IL and recently discovered that the Espresso Royale shops here sell excellent whole bean coffee. I'm also partial to cofees from Wisconsin: Colectivo (Milwaukee) and Just Coffee (Madison).

Then some half and half and honey, which I found I really enjoy in my coffee,

08/06/2015 - 4:30pm What do you think Romulus Michigan is named after?

I've got a D'deridex-class Warbird there. Not that you can actually see it or anything.

08/06/2015 - 3:30pm What will satisfy me?

Seeing the relief in our opponents' eyes when the fourth quarter of each game is over. Everything else will follow.

07/21/2015 - 10:57am Daredevil

New series by Mark Waid is a fave. Less gratuitous "darkness," more fun.

05/29/2015 - 3:52pm I live in Illinois

where we wave a white flag.

05/29/2015 - 11:22am Saren Tomalak

is perfectly acceptable Romulan name. What's your deal?

05/07/2015 - 9:39am Ron Johnson = My first Michigan hero

I was but a young lad in Upstate NY watching one of those college all star games where the guys all wear their college helmets. I saw Johnson the distinctive Michigan helmet and my imagination was captured. I went on to follow his career with the New York Football Giants, my favorite pro team. And I became a fan of Michigan football.

04/30/2015 - 3:03pm Manlius is my hometown!

For at least a year everyone in my dorm said I was from Manliness, New York. Right now I am in my office in Champaign, IL. And when I cross the street I'll be in Urbana.

04/23/2015 - 10:45am The Illinois Difference

I work in Champaign-Urbana and can confirm that the attitude of University of Illinois alumns, students, fans and university staff is definitely different from that of their Michigan equivalents. The Chancellor (who has an advanced degree from Michigan btw*) mentioned this in public a few weeks ago. Despite the many academic strengths of the institution, Illini are reluctant to talk up their university. As for sports... fans here remind me of one of my cats when he walks around my feet; he remembers being stepped on and is always afraid he'll get stepped on again.

04/16/2015 - 9:14am Give the guy a medallion...

and he can be in Urge Overkill.

04/16/2015 - 9:06am Louis Family Restaurant in Providence

My wife lived above it while she was in grad school at RISD. Get some Johnny Cakes and you might change your mind.

04/16/2015 - 9:04am I saw Bo at Bob Evans.

I never saw Bo at Zingerman's.

04/16/2015 - 9:03am That's a Norwegian Wolverine.

A Viking Wolverine.

04/09/2015 - 10:41am Outrage Politics is wearying.

I'm glad to see the administration quickly walk this one back.

04/02/2015 - 4:48pm This

But maybe it is "endow officials with vision" rather than "change play."

04/01/2015 - 10:56am Same thing happening

on the Illinois campus in Urbana and/or Champaign. But they wouldn't dare ask the kids to trade in their Bulls or Blackhawks shirts.
