"Controversial call sends Michigan to Elite 8."
A Yahoo reporter has taken a side on the call. Enjoy:

There's at least one funny "Volunteer" comment.
The reporter (Kaduk) is a former Wisconsin Badger and big Chicago sports fan:
Presumably not a Michigan fan? :)

Wait a minute...you should understand the rules of the game before questioning calls?
Mind. Blown.
March 29th, 2014 at 10:16 AM ^
I guess the reporter's view from the sideline was better than the referee's view right in front of his face.
March 29th, 2014 at 10:31 AM ^
His feet don't have to set. 90 percent of journalists are hacks, and thats a scientific fact.
March 29th, 2014 at 12:30 PM ^
I think you're underselling that percentage by about 9 percent.
Yeah, Stokes was not in the act of shooting. The "reporter" does not even know the rules.

explained this on the TBS studio cut in b/n its 2 games. He pretty much embarrassed Seth Davis who was taking the wrong side. Gottleib first explained the rule involving a primary defender and then noted that in college you're able to move sideways, that it's not necessary to be absolutely still, just as discussed above.
I would also note that "controversey" is not a synonym for "close call that could have gone either way."
i think the amazing part is that if Mr. Tacky Balls can see this was an obvious charge. what are the other journo's drinking?
March 30th, 2014 at 12:43 AM ^
I think the difference is that Gottlieb and Kellogg are NCAA guys, that's what they mostly watch. Ernie and Barkley and Kenny Smith and basically everyone else in the studio (except Seth Davis, who's an idiot) are NBA guys, where the rule's a litlle different and the usual interpretation even more so.

Bad calls happen. It sucks but it's part of the game.

to take from that article is:
fuck you yahoo for auto-play video ads with no controls.
March 29th, 2014 at 11:47 AM ^
(and then make sure to disable on your friendly neighborhood MGoBlog)
I also enjoy how Yahoo has gotten into the habit of making gifs with the 'meme' font because they clearly don't understand what a meme is

It was the right call - on replay that is clear.
Usually on replay when I see the "charge' calls, I almost always see a lean or slight movement that I did not notice in real time making me honestly question the call. The "charge" in last years Cuse game for instance, in real time thought it was a clear charge, on replay thought it was much closer and could understand any debate - here I am sorry but I don'tt think it is even close.
In this instance, now maybe I am wearing my "Go Blue" glasses, the replay more than confirmed that Morgan was completely set did not lean and just got ran over. Also, as mentioned in a different thread, had they let it go Levert had a clean steal - the ball stayed in bounds - actually after seeing that Levert had the steal, I wished they would not have called the charge, because of the inbounding troubles Michigan was having.
The only thing that would've been controversial is a block call in that situation given what the replay showed. Overall the refs sucked, Michigan got away with a few things, but if anyone thinks that the refs did not have any fingerprints on Tenn's "comeback", all that they are doing is trading my "Go Blue" glasses for thier "Tennessee Orange" glasses.

end of the game. Michigan made a lot of mental mistakes but the pressure intensified and built up more than it should have because of other calls.
To their credit, they pulled it out which good teams do.
March 29th, 2014 at 10:18 AM ^
That was one of those "bang bang" plays. Could've went either way. I'm glad we won, but it's tough to see a call like that in the closing seconds that basically determined the outcome.
Not that it ever should have come to that in the first place because the refs blew that review.
Marching on. Kentucky tomorrow.

Let's start a Kickstarter campaign to get the referees some bigger review monitors.

I was at the bar next to some Iowa State fans who were watching their game - which happened to be on time out when Stauskas made this play, and the guy turned to me and said "that was pretty badass" LOL it was an awesome heads-up play by Nik!

Ive only been watching basketball for about 4-5 years. Have never played basketball or anything at any point in my life before that. I'm completely obsessed with Michigan basketball now and while I think I mostly understand the game, I don't know all of the rules. Last night I watched the games with my Sparty friend, and when Stauskas did this I just turned to him and said "is that legal?" Ridiculous heads up play. It's nice that Stauskas can still have a positive effect on the game on an off shooting night.
:10 you see the guys right hand pull him down.
Loved the sweet Tenn foul on Walton. Now that's a foul.
If you are going to foul a guy shooting a three, then you go foul him linebacker-style in front of God and Country. Let the Ref's whistle sing it from the hills like the Sound of Music.

...is how much Stokes looks and sounds like Carmelo Anthony at the press conference.

Complete with head band. And the orange of the Tennessee uni's gives him the Carmelo glow., too. Very studied.

Michigan would have had the ball! Not like he was driving to the basket with the ball. Lavert knocked it out and stole the ball.

The media selects a narrative: MSU injuries, gritty Aaron Craft (oh so gritty) or powerhouse Volunteers and anything factual that counterdicts the narrative is either dismissed or simply ignored.
All week they slobbered over the greatness that was Tennessee and the fact they got their ASS handed to them for 37 minutes simply didnt register. All the horrible, horrible calls that went against Michigan didnt register. The only thing that DID register was the call that went against their latest darling and that injustice must be called out.
Look - anything that gives Morgan motivational fuel is A-OK with me. So if the media now want to jump on Kentucky's bandwagon and dismiss Michigan AGAIN then I"m fine with it.
Personally Beilein vs Calapari looks like a chess match between Bobby Fisher in his prime and my cat Murphy. Can't wait for tomorrow.
This is so true. They pre-write their story into a template and just plug in a few names and some metrics after the game. It's more "efficient" that way, don'tcha know. They can't be bothered with a story that does not fit the narrative.
Look for Belein's team to run a lot of back-door cuts and 1-3-1 zones against Kentucky. Even if they don't.
WTF, Bro?

Hopefully the team gets a copy of this. Also, make sure someone tells Morgan he is too damn weak to cover Kentucky inside.

And yes, absolutely zero mention of the OOB ball that should have gone Michigan's way on review.

I normally enjoy Deadspin, too, but this article was so one-sided and ridiculous...and check out the author's additional comment in the reply section. It almost makes it worse.
