Best guesses on who handles returns?
Obviously we will miss Peppers on defense and on special teams, but we also lose a couple of his primary backups/co-returners, like Chesson and Jourdan Lewis. Who would you like to see back there in the spring and against Florida? Is there an open competition or do you think there's a favorite?
I'd love to see Evans, Isaac, McDoom and a couple of the freshmen at least get a look in spring.

whoever has the best hands and judgment. For me at least, as important as Jabrill's actual punt returns was his ability to simply make the friggin' catch, and not let the punt roll by for an extra 10-20 yards like some in prior years. Actual punt return yardage after the catch is pure gravy. (I'm an ultra-conservative in this regard, obviously.)

Perhaps less conservative and more shell shocked from the RR days where Michigan could't handle a punt.

Speaking of Pepper punt returns, I think we got spoiled knowing that he would field the returns cleanly and we never had to worry about fumbling the fair catch. I don't remember a bad exchange due to him but I may be wrong. Pep's got the good hands !

I believe the only punt Peppers actually mishandled was the one he housed. He miffed it at first, didn't he?

But straightline speed and different look would be the primary reason. As I said before, I'd be open to be proven wrong int he spring, just thought it might be interesting to try.

My vote is McDoom . I don't think you want your starting RB back there returning kicks (Evans).
I think it'll be McDoom and/or Hudson. Whoever has better hands.

Whoever can run the fastest

My guess would be whoever on the team has the best hands, and the best speed/agility.

Of guys currently on roster, McDoom, Crawford, Thomas, and Hudson seem logical choices. But honestly, I don't care who is back there, as long as they follow Peppers' "catch everything, don't let it bounce" philosophy. So many invisible yards gained by making catches that others would ignore. I don't care if their 40 time is slower than mine (and I'm fat and quite slow), if you can catch the ball every time, you're good by me.

He should be a real consideration. Wasn't he one of the fastest guys on the team? It's also less wear and tear on starters (assuming he still won't be a starter since he has had to learn a whole new position). I'd love to see what he could do.

If it doesn't play this season, then when?
All this talk about not using starters got me to thinking. How often are our primary returners not starters? I don't think it's very often.

him to earn a regular role on the offense. I wouldn't mind seeing one of the freshmen returning kicks, but punts are another matter.

and understands that returns are about running north-south, not east-west. Fast would be good, too.
DPJ might be the guy, but he won't be the guy until he proves it as a second guy off the bench role during the non-conference season. Hudson and McDoom seem like good candidates to start the season. Didn't Evans return some kicks this past season?

I think he was back deep for kickoffs in other games too. I'd expect him to be in the mix. We must have a lot of guys that were returners in HS. I'd like to see Hudson returning punts and Thomas on kicks, but I think we'll end up with someone pretty darn good whoever it is.
