Well, the dream was nice while it lasted...
Another big recruiting weekend is about to come and go without much of anything to report of.
Wasn’t Michigans NIL approach supposed to be a game changer?
It is a game changer, just not in the right direction.
So, I am playing catch-up on this one as recruiting isn’t really my thing. Is the basic idea that we allow NIL once you get here and, if if you’re good enough to get the deals, you’ll get paid well eventually. However, some schools allow “third parties” to guarantee recruits contracts with money if they sign. Is that the general idea? Guaranteed money now versus a maybe?
if so, I can see why that might well be a challenge for us. Apologies for not being current or if I’ve missed something.
That's pretty much it. Other programs seem to really be pushing the envelope and daring the NCAA to do something about it. We aren't willing to get into "inticement" territory (offering a recruit $x to sign), which is still against the rules supposedly.
Thank you!
Also, it seems we are screwed unless we change our approach.
Emphasis on the quotes on third party. It's more of a "here's what we can offer, we'll find some booster to technically be the one to give it to you once you're here."
3-4 mill plus salaries for family?? Yikes, I’m the one to bitch about UMs adaptation of NIL but that’s just ludicrous. Almost a quarter of what A&M spent on players last year for one guy. ORE might actually keep it interesting with USC over there
They may beat USC 30-40% of the time…but they will continue to get curb stomped by Utah 100% of the time.
This comment is pertinent on more than one level as I am damn sure Utah is not reeling in top 5 classes. Good talent identification and good development matter as much as anything.
What happens when these guys don't work out is my question. QB recruiting is a crapshoot even in the best of circumstances with 5 star high school kids.
What happens when the coach doesn't want to play the million dollar player because the walk-on is better?
Interesting times ahead.
I feel like that won't necessarily matter. If it was actually about the player's being paid for their image, then yes, not seeing the field wouldn't be that great for promoting brands. But NIL is just being used for boosters to funnel money to recruits based on their on-field potential. And it's inevitable that some of those guys won't pan out, however you need them to join the team to discover this.
“But NIL is just being used for boosters to funnel money to recruits based on their on-field potential.”
It is interesting—and entirely predictable—how quickly and openly it’s become that. It’s simply brought the bag men out into the open, and it’s the Wild West now. That was never going to be advantageous for Michigan, alleged money cannon notwithstanding.
Our alleged money cannon has been revealed to be a stick gun.
In the short term, UM should continue to be competitive but over the long term, barring the NCAA reigning in the NIL, we will begin to fall behind. Hopefully the powers that be at UM will wake up and release the full power of the money kraken.
Michigan would be better off if pay-to-play was made totally legit. This current scenario where some programs are, at least, going against the spirit of the rule on inticement makes it harder for other programs, like us, to enter the fray. It's not because we're too stupid to figure out that 18 year olds like money, but because we (the entire university community) may have more to lose by associating ourselves with rulebreaking behavior than a football factory that happens to have a school attached.
What happens when the kid who got the money up front decides he isn’t playing enough and wants to transfer? How many times does a school get burned with that before it changes its approach? Yeah, it is going to take a few years for all this to shake out.
This is exactly what I was going to write. $3-4 million for an incoming recruit is ridiculous.
I don’t blame Dante for taking it but the NIL system is going to need a reboot.
When I was 17-18 years old if I was being offered 3-4 million dollars and my family members were getting high paying jobs, there’s no way I wouldn’t take that. Hell, I’d even go to OSU if that was the offer.
Whatever. I’ll just be glad when this is over
Well, he's in a unique situation for NIL sponsorship...
Don't worry. Our players can get a couple thousand dollars from the Mden.
“Apparently being offered between 3-4 million $ and family members are being arranged to have jobs for Nike.”
I have no idea if these details are true, but if they are it supports what I was saying about the challenges of competing with Oregon in the NIL games—even if we had a fully operative NIL program, matching this offer would be tough.
If this is what it is going to take I am not sure many programs are going to compete for the top top guys. Fortunately there are enough kids and they still have an 85 scholarship limit so good players will be available. But programs that have crazy wealthy alumni (Knight) that are also super tied into the football program are going to dominate the high end kids. Plus Nike needs Oregon to be good, it is their flagship school as far as branding goes. It's a win/win for Knight.
Michigan has Ross but not sure he is going to burn millions on high school kids so he can have enjoyable Saturday afternoons.
I have a hard time believing those numbers given that Oregon's recruiting class is good, but not stellar. Why pay out so much to one QB (and his family) when they apparently haven't been shelling out dough for other positions in order to build a team around Moore.
If those figures are accurate, matching them would be stupid!
Uncle Phil has deep pockets.
Fire everybody. This program's a joke.
So you think that will solve what is clearly an NIL problem? Because the new coach will pay recruits NIL money? Because the new coach will figure out admissions standards with the NIL?
Marcus freeman figured it out at nd in about a week. Hell harbaugh when he didn’t have the stink of clearly not wanting to be at Michigan got a top 5 class and beat out clemson dropping the bag for the #1 recruit. Michigan might not consistently be Alabama or osu but the staff is part of the problem right now and it goes back to harbaugh making it clear to the world he wants to be in the nfl.
the fans aren’t much better.
I mean, yeah our NIL program is a clown show sure…but what good does firing everyone do? This problem most likely goes higher than even Warde. It’s institutional. Change needs to happen from the top down and firing the coaching staff isn’t going to accomplish a darn thing other then set the team back to square one.
You have lifted the veil!!! See: Jermaine Gonzales
Yes, that's why I said "everybody."
The ones that would do the firing would be the major cause of why we are falling behind. They shouldnt be firing our coaches they should be arming them.
Going to fire our secondary coach because Oregon offers $3mil to a kid? Come on man.
3-4 million?!? He's already hitting the level of a late 2nd round pick salary. Have to believe the $$ only goes up over the coming years, and exponentially.
If colleges (thru their various NIL functionaries) are going to match or even beat what players make after they're drafted, we may soon see players insist on being redshirted - to preserve their eligibility for as long as possible!
One of the primary responsibilities in our big name recruitments has GOT to be an accurate assessment of what a kid is looking for. If it's simply highest bidder, then we need to gauge that ASAP and forget it. We'll never compete in that arena, and knowing that we can move on and save precious time on other recruits. I can't imagine it being that difficult to ascertain.
Well then, considering the reports are that the staff went in all or nothing to get this kid, either he’s an enigma wrapped in a riddle, or our staff be out there recruiting like
Can't beat that. Hell I'd send my grandson for that. Who cares where he grew up! Congrats young Man.
Oh absolutely, you’d be a fool to not take the money. Even if you bomb out you’re set for life with even a half-decent financial advisor.
Pretty sure none of us have felt good about this one since before Carr went to N.D. Better figure out the problem and quick.
I have nothing other than rumor to go on here but I've heard Matt Weiss is, uh, not a super cool guy.
Yeah this thing about Weiss seems to be popping up...
Harbaugh is putting a lot of trust in this guy so hopefully for his sake and UMs he's the right guy.
I have also read from many writers that Weiss is not an appealing recruiter to recruits, but many others on here will be quick to defend him. I am actually starting to feel a little sorry for Harbaugh; the school is going in on NIL only as far as the NCAA says to while others are bending the rules in obvious ways and Harbaugh is getting the rejection by many of the top ranked recruits he is going after because of it. He still puts way too much effort in recruiting too many low ranked players and sleepers, but it seems the University is holding him back on getting the higher ranked recruits with their lack of competing with NIL.
Maybe there is more to his motive on searching for an NFL job than the "itch" to win a SB. Harbaugh probably saw this coming from the NIL era and knew Michigan would do the minimum at best with it.
My guess is that Harbaugh is more disillusioned with the path that college football as a whole is taking than he is with Michigan's approach to NIL. He is pretty upfront about his approach to NIL and how in his mind it should be done. Michigan is a very good fit for him in that regard it would seem.
If that is the case, his head is stuck in the 1980s. Maybe he should have gone to Minnesota.
That applies to the forward pass on first down as well
I’ve read that Moore loved Gattis, but not Weiss. Essentially it was said that losing Gattis ended our chances with Moore, but we were still trying to claw back in it.
With the right NIL $$$, kids will love any coach. We need to stop this incorrect rationalization.
