11W recruiting outlook - good for UM?
They just posted a recruiting update. Long story short, they are painting about Zach Harrison and Trevor Keegan, thinking they will both Go Blue. I like it!
October 16th, 2018 at 8:19 PM ^
I hope we get both and Urban retires "for health reasons" at the end of their season and all their other recruits go somewhere else too.
October 16th, 2018 at 9:58 PM ^
Hey, man, he's just going to want to spend more time with his family! The kids are growing up so fast.
October 16th, 2018 at 10:19 PM ^
I don't remember if it was this site on another speculating that Urban would retire at the end of the year an Day would take over. I know ESPN was reporting Day was the coach in waiting but, they back tracked off that, then Urban had the "headache".. Take it for what it's worth, an internet rumor.
October 17th, 2018 at 7:28 AM ^
Honestly, i hope urban stays. Day will change things, like hiring competent assistant coaches, smart play calling, etc. It'd be great if urban would stay a year too long and really let the wheels start to fall off.
October 17th, 2018 at 9:57 AM ^
That's what would have happened if Tressel wouldn't have gotten fired. He would have stayed too long and they would have fallen off. Meyer would building his criminal enterprise at Texas or USC right now.
October 17th, 2018 at 4:50 AM ^
F that. I hope he stays and we start a 15 year run of domination on him and OSU.
October 17th, 2018 at 6:33 AM ^
Good luck with that 15 year thing. A victory this year would be a good start.
October 17th, 2018 at 10:53 AM ^
I thought selling jerseys in Ohio was a good start
October 17th, 2018 at 8:15 AM ^
Pope Urban will "retire for health reasons" again, as OSU board is getting "sick" of him like Florida did.
October 16th, 2018 at 8:19 PM ^
I... don't think that's the right URL.
October 17th, 2018 at 12:39 AM ^
If that was a "I copy-and-pasted the wrong tab incident" I'm sure the OP is very thankful he didn't accidentally post a link to Pornhub
October 17th, 2018 at 12:11 AM ^
Thanks, posted from mobile and clearly didn't do it right, lol...
October 17th, 2018 at 9:03 AM ^
No problem. Thanks for pointing out the article. I don't go on that website so there is absolutely no way I would have known about it. OSU certainly seems less invincible this year in recruiting, which has helped Michigan a bit with these particular recruits (maybe others).
October 16th, 2018 at 8:32 PM ^
I find their worrying and pessimism delicious
October 16th, 2018 at 9:34 PM ^
must admit i enjoyed reading the comments section of that 11W article. they sense trouble. they should.
October 16th, 2018 at 10:16 PM ^
My buddy at work is an OSU fan. Great guy, retired fed, and normally very optimistic.
He's convinced that not only are we beating OSU this year but that we're finally turning the corner back to greatness.
October 17th, 2018 at 12:40 AM ^
It's astonishing how their fans could go that quickly from "Michigan will never beat us again" to "we may never win another game."
October 17th, 2018 at 1:16 AM ^
It was like a switch was flipped in his brain during the Wisconsin game. Weird conversation on Monday morning.
October 17th, 2018 at 8:52 AM ^
lots of things went our way in the Wisconsin game most of which involved crappy Wiscy coaching. This weekend is truly the big one.
October 17th, 2018 at 9:00 AM ^
You need some help moving those goalposts? After we stomp MSU it'll be "well MSU sucks this year", then "PSU sucks this year", "OSU didn't have Bosa", etc, etc, etc.
Swear to Christ there are MI fans that would find something to bitch about even if we won another NC.
October 17th, 2018 at 9:52 AM ^
Yeah, I mean you're both right. Wisconsin did a lot of dumb stuff, but the reality is we left points on the board. And I'm not even talking about the missed field goals. We were moving the ball at will in the 2nd half, and we weren't really trying to pass on them. Talk about wearing down your opponent and grinding it out.
October 17th, 2018 at 10:07 AM ^
Truth to this. We should have beat Wisconsin by more. It’s almost as if we need to learn how to put good teams away again. I want to see the Michigan victory formation this Saturday
October 17th, 2018 at 2:16 PM ^
Knock on wood - that game was very pre-Tua Alabama like. Slow first half, opponent seems to be in it, then 2nd half beat down. If we can stay healthy enough for a trajectory like that, we'll that would be something.
October 17th, 2018 at 11:30 AM ^
UofM fans in some future February(most likely):
"I'm not gonna recognize this NC because UofM had to come back from 10 down against a weak Bama team, true champions don't do that."
October 17th, 2018 at 9:34 AM ^
Its the national media - their switch flipped and now they regurgitate how great Michigan is now ad naseum after beating an extremely weak defensive Wisconsin team. And the sheep take it as gospel.
The thing i noticed is, on this site and 247 site and rivals site, how our offensive line is suddenly awesome! Its a little better, yeah, but holy fuck look at the lines we have played the last few weeks - our line is still average (which is better than last year and beginning of the year i admit) but people are now greatly over-hyping our O-Line.
BTW, Purdue is going to beat OSU this week. You heard it here first!
October 17th, 2018 at 10:41 AM ^
Yea, I think the o-line praise is going a bit far. I do think they are a significant upgrade from last year - especially pass pro - but Wisconsin has a seriously mediocre defense. I think Northwestern's is better, and MSU will be better than NW, and it took us time to get going against them.
October 17th, 2018 at 10:00 AM ^
Quicker than Michigan fans go from "this is the year!" to "fire Harbaugh?"...? I'm not even sure the ink was dry on the Notre Dame takes before that happened...
October 17th, 2018 at 9:18 AM ^
I think there are lots of reasons for OSU fans to be apprehensive these days. And not just about one game, or even one season.
OSU's whole program right now is built on a model of recruiting top-3 classes just about every year, playing simple concepts that young, inexperienced players can handle, and basically out-talenting their opponents. It's worked great because their head coach is Urban fucking Meyer, who has three national championship rings and whose image was not seriously tarnished (in the eyes of most people) until the recent Zach Smith scandals. On top of this, OSU has long been viewed nationally as the dominant Big Ten program, with Meyer having never lost to Michigan since arriving in Columbus.
Well, it's now been reported that Meyer was pissed off about the 3-game suspension--maybe pissed off enough to seriously entertain offers from elsewhere? The headaches/cyst thing has happened, which is eerily reminiscent of his departure from Florida. There are rumors of a coach-in-waiting. And now Michigan is looking pretty damn good again.
I'm not saying OSU is built on a house of cards. But there are definitely cracks in the foundation Meyer's image is already tarnished by the Smith scandals--not in Ohio, perhaps--but nationally. That may not have much effect on his recruiting ability alone. But a loss to Michigan significantly changes the national perception even further. Right now the calculus is basically "yeah, Meyer is a scumbag but he always beats Michigan." Well, what if he doesn't always beat Michigan?
These kinds of things aren't going to have seismic effects on their own, but even the difference between, say, averaging a top-3 recruiting class and averaging mid top-10 could be very significant given OSU's "play early, leave early" paradigm.
What could have a seismic impact, of course, is if Meyer leaves. There is probably is no other coach OSU can realistically hire who will bring the same kind of recruiting cachet that Meyer has. Ryan Day sure as hell doesn't. So it's unlikely that any other coach could keep Meyer's success going using the same "recruit like hell" approach. They'd still have plenty of talent on the roster, and would still recruit well--just not at the same Meyer level. They'd need to shift to being a slightly more developmental program, or else be looking at 10-3 or 9-4 being the new normal rather than 12-1.
And to make matters worse, if Meyer was gone guess what Big Ten coach would clearly be the biggest name? Yeah, they don't like that.
I don't even know how likely any of this is to happen. But there does seem to be a decent enough chance that if I was an OSU fan I'd be at least apprehensive about it, maybe legitimately worried.
October 17th, 2018 at 9:31 AM ^
I'd like to see Meyer leave and coach at ND.
October 17th, 2018 at 10:03 AM ^
I guess you never know, but Kelly is only 56, hasn't had any embarrassing episodes in a while, and has their team in the top-5. So that job may not be coming open any time soon, which is strange thing to say for Notre Dame. Plus ND is probably on the short list of schools that would take issue with Meyer's baggage.
I think if Meyer leaves OSU then he'll probably go back into broadcasting or else to the NFL. But I still can't bring myself to believe he'll actually walk away from OSU.
October 17th, 2018 at 10:06 AM ^
I don't think ND would allow his "we ain't here to play school" recruiting model. Urban is a good fit for the SEC and the SEC's representative in the B1G (OSU).
October 17th, 2018 at 11:24 AM ^
Yeah I sometimes forget about ND's academic standards, given the fact that their current coach killed a student.
October 17th, 2018 at 3:52 PM ^
Well Buddy better not be fucking with us...Mr. Great Guy better be right this has to be the year...
October 16th, 2018 at 8:40 PM ^
Wonderful! Keegan and Harrison would round things out nicely.
Recruiting is always tastier when beating rivals head-to-head.
October 16th, 2018 at 8:41 PM ^
That’s a shame
October 16th, 2018 at 8:43 PM ^
Keep it rollin’ Blue!
October 16th, 2018 at 8:51 PM ^
Steve Wiltfong has Keegan going to Georgia. I know he's not always right, but his prediction is the newest at 9/14 while most of the other picks came over the summer. I don't know if we are in the driver's seat with Keegan. As for Harrison, who knows how that ends up. Hopefully he ends up blue. We just need to keep winning.
October 16th, 2018 at 9:02 PM ^
I'd recommend listening to Sam Webb's recruiting roundup from this morning. It was devoted to talking about Keegan and his visit for the Wisconsin game. It's easy to believe Michigan helped themselves quite a bit.
October 16th, 2018 at 9:24 PM ^
Georgia is tough to beat. He'd be playing with the best teammates that money can buy.
October 16th, 2018 at 10:15 PM ^
Clever. The material is so fresh and quick witted.
October 16th, 2018 at 10:12 PM ^
I just listened to the roundup after reading your comment. Very good info and thanks for the heads up.
October 17th, 2018 at 9:17 AM ^
Thanks for the link. I didn't know his family was from Livonia, especially his grandparents. I remember Nico Collins being drawn to Michigan for the opportunity to play in front of his grandparents from Lansing. I hope Keegan considers this as strongly as Nico did.
As Sam pointed out, I think being close to Illinois, having an OL that is improving week-by-week, and having family in Michigan (who are Michigan fans) will give us a strong chance. Again, we just need to keep winning. Go Blue! Beat State!
October 16th, 2018 at 8:55 PM ^
If they don't think they're gonna get them why are they painting them?
October 16th, 2018 at 9:14 PM ^
They probably figure it couldn’t hurt. Wouldn’t you be flattered if someone painted you?
October 17th, 2018 at 1:50 AM ^
Maybe like one of your French girls?
October 16th, 2018 at 8:57 PM ^
I feel bad for them. Nah. Fuck them. Hope all their players leave.
October 16th, 2018 at 9:03 PM ^
bosa just did!
October 16th, 2018 at 9:08 PM ^
I got a feeling your whole family is going down. But for now, I gotta study - Harbaugh
