Jim McElwain to replace Dan Enos spot?

According to Brandon Justice, Jim McElwain was on Michigan’s campus today for a job interview. Most likely an assistant. Via Twitter.

I'm very conflicted on this.  One on hand, he's run some good to very good offenses at Bama and CSU, and was highly sought after at one point for a reason.  On the other, his offense at Florida was a tire fire, as was his dealing with fans, players, and the media.  On the other other hand, the offense issues could likely be blamed on Nuss and the other stuff is more endemic to his role as HC, and will be less of a thing as OC/position coach.  On the other other other hand, I want to keep making shark jokes and that will be harder/more awkward if he's here.

Fuck it, bring him on.  Can't imagine he'll be a significant downgrade from Pep/Drevno (assuming they're retained), and if he flames out, then we can start up the shark jokes in earnest.

At least he'll know where to go for dinnerPhoto of Sharks BBQ - Troy, MI, United States. The sign!

But who in the fuck is going to protect our Lake Sturgeon, as the other poster referred to? Look at how much sexier they are than his Sharkmistress was, this is going to be tragic! As long as we don't hire any soon to be ex MSU trustees for that job we might be ok.

A guy that worked his way up to head coach of Florida and won 2 division titles isn't qualified to coach WR here. Come on man. The relationship between what fans know about asst coach ability and what they think they know is fascinating.

In the same article that talks about McElwain interviewing it says that there are rumors Drevno has been stripped of placalling duties and Harbaugh is trying to bring in a playcaller.

I cannot imaging McElwain would go from being a HC in the SEC to working under Tim Drevno.

We made plenty of good fun about Mac, but having him be a position coach would not be bad at all. Dude was a WR coach from 1987-2005(with OC and QB sprinkled in from job to job).

Saban wanted him at Bama while Mac was coaching at Fresno State. If he stays with Saban for more than a couple years then Saban thinks he’s good.

Genuinly confused at the amount of hate here for this guy? Has a proven track record as a coordinator/position coach, and did a great job with the offense at a mid major HC job. Clearly, he didn't have what it took to run a top 10 blue type program, but there are tons of guys out there who are great coordinators who couldn't handle a job like that. Would you not take Will Muschamp on your defensive coaching staff? This seems pretty similar on the offense.

I mean the optimist would say if Will Grier never gets suspended they could sill be one of the two best teams in the SEC east. Like Brian said with Enos college pro style lifers are hard to find.

I have read a couple reports that he was offered a position with play calling duties. (247 sports and Saturday down south) Anyone have better sources to deny or confirm?

While it's certainly possible he could get hired, my guess is McElwain is going to sit on his buyout this year. I'm sure he has a clause that he has to be looking for work. I truly doubt he's going to come up north just for the opportunity to be a position coach. Now, if Pep leaves for the NFL and an OC position opens up then I can see him coming to rehab for a year or two before getting another HC job or jumping to NFL.

He coached the national title offenses. Colorado st was was good. Look at lane kiffin. Look at USC and how bad that was and look what he did at bama and fau. Just wasn't a good fit at Florida. He's a proven play caller so he comes in and can help this offense. My first question was what the hell are we doing with ed warriner? I thought he would be o line coach or a coordinator of some sort. If we hire mcelwain we won't have room for another position coach. To me warriner seems more valuable since he is an oline coach and we struggled with that and he can call plays/offensive game plan. Unless someone is leaving we don't know about

I know people will talk him up, but he had a perfectly fine but unspectacular offense at CSU for most his run and judging anyone based on having Alabama's talent is a bit foolish. And let's not forget how he left Florida - he was a mess and then lied for sympathy. I guess if you want a pro style offensive coordinator that's the pool you choose from, but I'm not excited.

This would be a terrible hire. McElwain got hired at Florida based on a small sample size of work at CSU, where he had a 5-star RB (Dee Hart) transfer from Alabama. His success there had nothing to do with coaching ability, just a talent advantage over the rest of the Mountain West.

Take a look at the Florida message boards if you think he can coach.
