Bingo! Had much more talented

Bingo! Had much more talented teams than most of his opponents yet chose to play like he was Stoke City taking on Manchester United.

The past year's team was extremely talented yet limped to 6-6-6. Some of their best players were thinking of leaving the team because of his coaching.

These is a criminal

This is a criminal conspiracy. Players (some are minors at the time) are being pushed by "influencers" who they trust against their own interests. They sign with agencies with higher fees/less credentials. They sign less lucrative endorsement deals. All so that a cabal of corrupt adults can make a good amount of money.

I support paying players a (at least near) market rate. Even so, all involved in these conspiracies (even coaches) deserve the harshest NCAA and legal punishments. State AGs should file class action lawsuits to try and get some money back from these frauds, both for the players and the universities who paid "coaches" whose real skill was funneling money.

Isn't that much tougher for

Isn't that much tougher for the Slovaks and Swiss? Seems like their players would be at least on par with the NHL-less Americans and Canadiens. They have many players playing in the same leagues as the North American NHL rejects. The Swiss league is one of the best in the world and the Slovakia has a KHL team and easy access for their players to play in the other European leagues.

It seems like if you are losing 8-10 NHL guys while other countries are losing 100+ that tilts the competetive balance in your favor?

I don't really see where this

I don't really see where this tradeoff would realistically exist.

As a reply to your example, I would definitely take an extra win per season, assuming there were no other impacts other than an extra win over the alternate reality where Michigan does not switch helmets, for the sake of abandoning some purely aethestic sense of tradition.

However, if you assume that tradition has value (aids recruiting of players and coaches, keeps fans/alums coming and spending/donating during good and bad times, drives media attention which also improves the previous two aforementioned impacts) in contributing to wins, then you really aren't talking about a wins against tradition tradeoff, as wins impact tradition and tradition impacts wins.

This could be an interesting conversation if you had some past examples where programs traded/sold out tradition (or attempted to) for expected wins (or did the opposite, past up opportunities to win to preserve tradition) and the results of those decisions. I am not aware of any such easily identifiable examples.

North Dakota is a really good team but I disagree that it would "take the game of their lives to win tomorrow".

1) It is hockey so flukey stuff happens regularly

2) North Dakota isn't that much better than Michigan

I was surprised too but I

I was surprised too but I guess it makes sense when you consider how much other stuff Nik did (hit bigs off of the pick in role, drive, shoot midrange jumpers) while Robinson is pretty much a 3p specialist. Also, Nik was much better at shooting 3s off of the dribble/creating his own 3 point shot so I don't think the numbers necessarily mean DR is a better 3pt shooter.

No idea. I would say that

No idea. I would say that Chatman is almost stretch four territory as well.

It was especially puzzling this year as we had zero wing/guard depth but we still refused to play a stretch four (despite our solid number of big men)*

Doyle was our best big last

Doyle was our best big last year.

How would he have been our

How would he have been our best big man? He is 6'6" and not particularly athletic.

I think it is odd that Coach B recruits guys like Max, Wagner, etc. and never considers playing them as a 4.

We wouldn't have thought they

We wouldn't have thought they were tourney locks because we also wouldn't have known that the rest of the B1G was so bad.

I think we should continue to employ Beilein but this was a bad season. We were blown out by the worst OSU team that we will see for a long time. We lost to a UW team that would have probably been beaten by last year's UW team by 30+ points. We were blown out by Michigan State and IU teams that are good but aren't anything special.

The NHL didn't have a

The NHL didn't have a mediocre of collection of hockey teams-- it was the 6 best hockey teams in the world. The B1G hockey conference can be compared to the 50+ other teams in college. Two of the B1G teams are near the bottom 10 teams in all of college hockey.

If B1G hockey had great Minnesota and Michigan teams and good MSU and UW teams battling it out for the regular season title and then going on to serious runs in the playoffs, then people would like the league. Instead,  the highlight has been mediocre Michigan and Minnesota teams trying to screw up the least to win a meaningless title in a crappy league.

If the teams in the B1G were

If the teams in the B1G were playing at their level at historic norms, the league would be awesome (even though everyone would be playing the same 5 teams). Instead, Michigan State and Wisconsin had/have some of the worst teams in their histories, Michigan 2 teams that were bad by recent standards, Minnesota has been underachieving, and Ohio State is even worse than their middling historic average.

So instead of seeing 4 good teams (UM, UW, MSU, UMINN), an average team (OSU), and a below average team (PSU for their first few years, though they have been the one school to exceed expectations), we get two dumpster fire teams (UW, MSU), 3 average teams (UM, UMINN, PSU) and a below average team (OSU).

Chatman is a way better

Chatman is a way better handler. He was a PG for most of his HS career. Dawkins can barely dribble.

Why not? Even though we are

Why not? Even though we are football-first school Michigan has more than enough sports fandom/obsession and school "spirit"/pride to support 2 major sports teams that don't even share the same season.

Also, we have some of the best facilities in all of college basketball and a ton of recruiting non-basketball recruiting ammo (Harbaugh can even be an asset--I know there have been posts here about how he has met with baseball recruits and they love it; baseball is more of a second tier college sport, but still).

The Crisler environment is a bit weak compared to top basketball schools but we have really only had two great seasons, both of which were during the Brandon era of DJs, overselling student tickets, putting big donors close to the floor, etc.

I think we can (and have had--despite the cheating sanctions as everyone probably cheated in early 90s college bball) top tier football and basketball programs and coaches.

Agreed. I am kind of

Agreed. I am kind of surprised the ACC came out against it. I know Clemson, Florida State, and (kind of) Miami are the main players football-wise, but I figured schools like Pitt, BC, Syracuse, and even ND with their affaliation would push the commissioner to stay neutral on the issue.

I think they could get solid

I think they could get solid guys like Uche, Mbem-Bosse (using recent Michigan examples) if they got in on them early. They have had some success finding under-the-radar Georgia guys.

Klepper should host. It would

Klepper should host. It would be good exposure for him (so he would probably put a good amount of effort into it) and he has some close family members that went to U of M. I don't know if Eisen would provide the same comedic relief.

I am up at night speculating on the host of a variety/awards/recruiting show that is not even on TV and is one year away. Thus is the power of Harbaugh.

Best part of this is how he

Best part of this is how he came out in 80s gear/style

This dude sucks. Wisconsin

This dude sucks. Wisconsin has assembled only a middling staff in the B1G West ( a huge negative when you think about which staffs are in the B1G West).

For all those in the "it was

For all those in the "it was definitely intentional" party, what motivation would Wideman have for laying the ref out like that? He was that upset about a missed call in a regular season game?

Impossible - many M fans

Impossible - many M fans across the internet assured me that he was not a Michigan caliber recruit and would for sure be processed by Harbaugh.

Are you sure about that? I

Are you sure about that? I know it is FCS but many of the Ivies meet all financial need. The service academies also technically give non-football scholarships to many of their players (they may have an exception though). I always figured you could still get need-based financial aid (though I guess it could only be FA from the state/feds)

Did I ever disagree with

Did I ever disagree with Brian or imply what I would I would say to Swenson if I were Harbaugh? I think the staff should have cut him lose in the summer/fall.

I just disagreed with your ridiculous assertion that classes at programs like Michigan are always full after signing day and that any recruit that wants to commit is  completely out of luck after signing day.

Also, I don't think Swenson would have signed with a quality (top 20 or so recruiting) football program regardless of when he decommitted from Michigan/commited to a different school. He just isn't a high caliber recruit.

They probably will not this

They probably will not this year but they have in years past . Just from my memory:

2008 - waited on Terrell Pryor

2012 - Kozan vision question

2014 - Malik McDowell saga

2015 - banked a lot of scholarships, reports of guys maybe committing after signing day

Seems like a lot of programs will have at least one spot open after signing day because of players leaving, last minute decommitments, guys not academically qualifying, taking their chances on a late decider to who chooses someone else, etc. I don't think his comment was stupid. A good selection of teams will have room for who they really want (I actually don't think that many schools really want Swenson FWIW).

No way. We played great with

No way. We played great with LeVert against Texas, early B1G games etc. Beilein teams always seem to struggle at the start of the year and for the past two years LeVert has only been healthy in the beginning of the year. Thus, a lot of fans think "the team is better without him" even though when he plays he leads the team in every statistical category (including assists). If he even just took all of MAAR's touches/time the team would probably score 10 or so more points per game*

If she is trying to make the point that MSU's journalism program is so much stronger, why does she mention that the staff of the WSJ is full of Michigan alums (and absent of MSU alums).

I also agree players should

I also agree players should get paid and have nothing against any player who takes some cash or any boosters that provide it.

However, the programs that are complicit with this, in my opinion, are still "dirty"/unethical. The product they are selling is amateur athletics. No one in any of the programs would admit that they are funneling payments to players. That is dishonest--it isn't like Coach K, the UK AD, etc. is standing up and saying "We believe players should be paid and will do so despite the rules because it is right". Many of them problem defend the "student-athlete" model and don't want to outbid peer schools for players.

That Jimmy Harbaugh kid will

That Jimmy Harbaugh kid will never factor into the QB race. Word on the street is that he was late to the very first team meeting. Shows a lack of character, effort, and seriousness with regards to his approach to the game.
