Football Scoop (24/7 confirmed): Harbaugh offers position to Ed Warriner
This is interesting since Michigan is currently at 10, a sign that Pep is on his way out?

EDIT: 24/7 confirms he has interviewed as an Offensive Analyst: https://247sports.com/college/michigan/Bolt/Ed-Warinner-to-join-Michiga…

are now in the offensive kitchen? Drevno, Hamilton, Enos, and Warriner--all have been OCs recently I believe--plus Harbaugh
The one thing I give Harbaugh a ton of credit for is that he doesn't seem to just hire guys he knows and has worked with. He tries to find guys that he thinks makes the program better. The opportunity to put a really great staff together exists, IF he can get it delegated and organized the right way.

he wouldn't be a cook. His job would primarily be breaking down film, scouting opponents and helping drawup gameplans as well as recruit on campus. Think of him more as the guy that delivers the food than a cook. He will have no input on gameday playcalling and won't even be on the field.
January 20th, 2018 at 2:05 PM ^
that's his job. The man has 30+ years of experience. Do you really need to bring in someone with that resume (who, mind you, already has a job coaching) to break down film and draw up scouting reports? There are coaches on this board who can do that work. He will be much, much more involved than that.
The other option is that he really, really dislikes PJ Fleck.

Most of us didn't recognize the significance at that time (and I include myself in that group).

True about their OL. Agrees with what I said above, he seems to be a good OL coach but not a good OC. Hiring him as an OL coach I would be happy with even, but OC would be bad.
And it seems that way. I'd be okay with letting other teams figure that out for sure though.
January 20th, 2018 at 2:02 PM ^
It might be stereotyping a bit, but it makes sense. Why would you expect guys with an OL background to be creative when it comes to offensive scheme?
Maybe someone with more knowledge could weigh in.
January 20th, 2018 at 2:08 PM ^
passing routes, the OL coach is involved with every other aspect of an offense. All run game, screens, pass protection.
Just because it isn't designing a 30 yard pass play doesn't mean it isn't creative.

Think it has more to do with the workload. OL is such a large position group, and you have to teach the players not only proper technique but also schemes, etc. Molding 5 guys into a cohesive unit is hard, and doesn't really lend itself to doing double duty as an OC. Just my opinion.

Jim Bollman was also co-OC under Jim Tressel when OSU won the NC in 2002, and went to the NC game in 2007 and 2008. I guess we want him right?

Bollman's S&P+ offense rankings:
2012: 59 (year before Bollman got to MSU)
2013: 64
2014: 10
2015: 31
2016: 66
2017: 92 (worse than Michigan this past year)
Seems like a top tier coach to me..

He was OC that entire time, with those results, and was run out of town and his next job was a clear demotion. What does that say about him?
Also, OSU's S&P+ offensive ranks while Warriner was there:
2012: 16
2013: 2
2014: 1
2015: 20
2016: 23
2017: 7
Guess which year his Co-OC Tom Herman left? Answer is after 2014. Guess which year Warriner was run out of Columbus? Answer is after 2016. He was given the most stocked cupboard offensively you could ask for and could barely put together a top 20 offense. You think he would do any better here?
Also glad to know OC's now get credit's for W/L record now. Can we bring back Mike DeBord? We went 11-2 with him in 2006 you know.

Actually, don't. There is no comparison.
I mean, surely Harbaugh isn't gonna make this guy just an analyst. If that IS the plan, I know I'm not alone in thinking that adding more line cooks to an already crowded kitchen sounds wonky at best.
Harbaugh will either truly shake-up the top of the O staff or another bad season will surely force his hand.
We'll see. I personally think Shea is gonna be an overnight sensation. Just how sensational hangs in the balance of these decisions though, it seems.

pep is gone. this guy also focuses on a portion of the OL to coach (ie. interior or tackles) to assist drevno.

Maybe that's the point. The analysts can look into opposing defenses (especially if they have experience on those teams in the past) and the breadth of offensive philosophies can inform how best to attack a particular opponent in a given week.
Just a guess on my part.

maybe JH is getting former insiders of our main rivals to possibly gain an extra edge next year.
January 20th, 2018 at 1:29 PM ^
He was a co-OC under Urban Meyer running Meyer's offense. What he has is knowledge about how that offense works. He was a coach for a long time at quite a few stops before OSU.
Good coaches shouldn't be shoehorned into some specialty. Good coaches can typically coach different positions, different schemes and players with different skill sets. What they bring is knowledge and an ability to teach and recruit.
There are some exceptions, of course, but Warriner is typical in that he's had experience with teams running a variety of offenses.

Potentially, Enos steps in for Hamilton, and Warinner for Drevno. Add Mike Hart to coach running backs...somehow.
January 20th, 2018 at 1:19 PM ^
Not to be mean, but what is the reason that we want Mike Hart to coach RB's, other than the fact he went to Michigan?

He's not a random coach's son who has never played the position before
January 20th, 2018 at 3:40 PM ^
he was a great all around RB that also was a great blocker. i would take that track record over our current RB coach.
January 20th, 2018 at 3:46 PM ^
At Western. He recruited well and WMU rarely fumbled while he was there. How much of that was Fleck finding talent above MAC level and how much was Hart? I don't know. But, I don't think he's just a name bc he played at UM.
