OT- Michigan Early Action

Submitted by Crainey18 on

I applied to Michigan Early Action and was wondering if anyone knew the exact date they would be announcing. I know it will come out by the 24th but was hoping to hear earlier so I could suprise my mom with an acceptance letter and Michigan gear. I hope to be a third generation Wolverine and have grown up a huge fan so I am a bit anxious. Any insight knowledge would be appreciated.

I got in after being deffered from the early action and still wound up in the honors college so if you don't get in on the 22nd its also not the end of the world.

I'm waiting for my early action response too so I know the feeling OP. It was a great feeling when I got officially invited for my SMTD audition so an actual acceptance letter(or email) would be amazing. Thanks to all you application vets for the info!

As someone who was deferred in December last year and then later accepted in March, don’t be discouraged if you don’t get in right away. I’ve come to know that’s what happened to a lot of students here. Good luck to you!

EA at Michigan is a common backup play for many Ivy League caliber applicants.  As soon as those candidates accept their Early Decision admissions to their Ivy of #1 choice, they are required to notify Michigan and withdraw their application.  That happens over the month of January and opens a ton of spots for kids that have been deferred EA.

Back when the Big Envelope was the thing many a year ago and Early Action wasn't even a glimmer in the Admissions Office's eye, I got my acceptance package on December 22nd. All my friends had heard a couple weeks earlier. I was freaked out, with no idea what came next if I didn't get in, because I was dumb and only applied to one school. Opening that mailbox was arguably the best thing that's ever happened to me.

I feel your anxiety. Good luck!

Write an e-mail or actual letter (!) to the admissions officer that covers your school, stressing that you are still very interested in UM, and giving any major new honors you have earned.  Also, ask your counselor to fill out the midyear report on Common App and make sure they send an updated transcript with your 7th semester grades.  We have found having your counselor or principal call really has no effect on their ultimate decision.

If you get deferred you have about until the third week of January to submit new info including fall grades. They won't tell you this but if you have an extra recommendation, I'd send it. I'd also send a letter stating your interest. You would be surprised but if it comes down to making a decision between two applicants and one clearly states they want in, they take into consideration.

Glad to know the tip of checking Wolverine Access if the mail doesn't show up.  I still think it's pretty weak for them to send out word on the last business day before Christmas and then bail for break.  I remember getting my acceptance letter in November, back in the paper application and snail mail days.  I cannot believe how much more of a production it is to apply and get into Michigan (and other schools) then when I was there.

Good luck to all waiting on a decision!  Go Blue!

I do Alumni Student Recruiting for the Admissions Office. There isn't an exact date but I can tell you that for the last five years they've sent out early decision notification about a week before Christmas. Since the Common App came on the scene I believe the earliest I've seen it was the 15th and latest was 21st/22nd.

Crainey, It can be very stressfull waiting. You will get in and it will change your life. If you don't, it won't be because you aren't smart enough. My mom and dad had to spend hours with me at the library to help me study and be prepared to have the skills to ace everything in high school, which helped my chances immensely. Just hang in there and best of luck to you.

I heard back last year on the 21st. I remember everybody at my school was terrified about the alleged Christmas Eve deadline, but I wouldn't worry about that, my guess is it's a standard measure of time they purport every year. Everybody hears back at the same time, whether you're accepted or deferred (or declined if they still actually do that for EA). Good luck, and Go Blue!

I got mine exactly 6 years ago today. I remember getting nervous seeing people getting accepted on the forums. Dad took me out to a movie, and had the good news waiting for me in my inbox when I came back.

waiting for college acceptance letters. Good luck. It's a difficult time, but you'll get through it. I hope you get into Michigan, considering it seems to be your dream school.

First off, good luck! I'm a current freshman in LSA and I got my EA acceptance via Wolverine Access last year on the 21st. The wait is hard and definitely sucks, but you've done everything you can at this point. Go Blue!

I got my U-M acceptance letter on October 15, 1995.  It's a very different world now of Common Apps, perfectly tailored essays, and precision, laser beam teacher letters of recommendation.

I was just talking to my son, who's a senior, and he was relaying all his friends' accolades and the schools they were, and were not, getting into. It's crazy that 17 and 18 year old's have to be exceptional (and close to perfect on paper) to even think about getting into a good school. He has a friend with a 3.9 (out of 4.0) GPA and a 35 ACT who got into Vanderbilt, but other friends with similar numbers and crazy amounts of extracurriculars who didn't. Another girl is our school's champion debater, two years ahead in math (whatever comes after Calculus senior year), world traveler (lived for a year in India while her single mom did a Fulbright scholarship), great writer, etc, etc, and she just got into Columbia. I cannot imagine myself at age 17 doing anything but writing good papers and smoking a lot of cigarettes.

My wife is in a Michigan parent group that seems to know everything about U of M and this is their consensus opinion.

Back in the stone age, I filled out UM's 4 page application in pen which included three references and mailed it in after my Junior year. We took the SAT once and didn't prepare for it at all. Like many here, I was, and still am, arrogant and only applied to one school. I was accepted in October and boy did I enjoy the rest of my Senior year.

Things are so much harder (and expensive) now.

My 10 year old is determined to attend Michigan and per an earlier post, I just told him he'll be up against 54,000 other kids.  He looked up from his ipad and said "I'm pretty sure I'm in good position."

Love this kid.
