2018 Starting QB, who you got?

Curious what the board thinks.

Who's taking the first snap at Notre Dame next September 2018?

Doesn’t Shea have better grades on PFF and better stats? Plus he was a higher ranked recruit. Assuming he can pick up the playbook by the fall then I think he’s a clear favorite. His familiarity with the system or lack of familiarity is the wildcard. But he’s more talented than Peters.

Either Shea won't be eligible in 2018 per NCAA rules, or he will start in 2018.  He didn't transfer here to be the backup.   Just my opinion.

Patterson, if only because I don't think the tackle situation will be fixed (might get worse) and his legs are at least a partial solution. If the tackles are somehow improved, I'm calling it a coin flip between Shea and Peters.

If Shea can pick up our offense quickly he's the guy, but Peters has a 2 1/2 advantage.   ....or rather just 2 if Shea comes in early.   I think we'll probably need them both at sometime next year.   Hopefully we don't need McCaffery unless he out plays them.

If Patterson is eligible, he'll be the starter. I'm not anti-Peters, but Peters only looked promising in the limited opportunities he was given. Patterson has far more game experience and has shown himself to be a dynamic playmaker against top competition.

He will be in his third year in the program, and it takes more than one fall camp to pick up Harbaugh's offense.  We saw this to be true, even with a future NFL QB Jake Ruduck at the controls.

That said, I dearly hope we give Shea a spread-n-shred package we can employ from time to time to keep the defense discombobulated.

Don't know who starts the season, but I predict all three of them will play next year with our pass pro.

I am happy we now have the depth, but I am frankly surprised that Shea chose Michigan without even shopping around a bit.  I get that he has a connection to the University via family and such, but it seems like there's a ton of places he could have gone where he would be basically guaranteed a starting job.  UCLA?  Florida?  Shit, wouldn't Nebraska be perfect with the new regime?  Who does USC have behind Darnold?  Oklahoma after Mayfield?  Maybe he convinced himself that the only way he can prep himself for the NFL is to be in a pro style system and Michigan was the only real option, and thus worth the risk of losing a QB competition.

2018 will be an interesting season.

I think people are overthinking this.

If you are Patterson and your goal is to make it to the NFL or at the very least have a good college career, why would you relinquish a starting QB job at Ole Miss to become a backup QB at Michigan? You don't. You go Michigan to start, otherwise you stay at Ole Miss or go elsewhere.

If you're Harbaugh, and you are 100% confident in your QBs (Peters/McCaffery/incoming QB recruits) why bring in Patterson? You aren't. You bring in Patterson because Peters put up pedestrian numbers and Patterson is better than the guys on your roster.

All signs point to Patterson.

Would have liked to see how he would have done against Bama and Auburn. He had easier competition and the second half of the season when the team is most comfortable. Ole Miss people are saying there would have been a competition to make themselves feel better.

Patterson seems to have "command of the huddle," which pulls him even with Peters going into the head-to-head this spring. My guess is Patterson starts against ND in September.

My money is on Peters getting the nod to start the season and then Patterson getting more significant playing time as the season goes on...and possibly being the starter by the end of the season.  If the O-line continues to be a weakness, we'll need a QB who can improvise on the run.  My hope is the O-line deos a good job and lets Peters do his thing, but I'll believe it when I see it.

the more the merrier. Count me in with the 'if eligible, Patterson begins the season as starter'-contingency.

Based just on last year, Patterson was allowed to show more.

Our coaches did not seem to trust Peters, the OL and/or the receivers, so it was a very conservative game plan.  The best thing I can say about Peters' play is he did not turn the ball over.  After the O'Korn experience, this is high praise.  he flashed a lot of potential but just looked tentative out there.

We'll see what Peters can do in the Outback Bowl.  I hope they open things up and let him show more of what he can do.  If he shines in the game, then maybe Peters has to be seen as the favor to start next year.  If he struggles, then that door could not be more wide open for Patterson.

He did show more.  Here is what he showed against 3 of the 4 good teams he played against....

@Cal Lost - 16-44 for 363 2 TD's,  3 INT's

@Bama Lost - 14 - 29 for 165 0 TD's, 2 INT's

LSU Lost 10 - 23 for 116 0 TD's, 3 INT's

2 TD's and 8 INT's is very John OKorn ish.

Peters is going to win the starting job, and we will have 2 good backups.

I personally haven’t seen enough of Paterson to give home the nod but I am expecting a lot of growth from peters this offseason and hopefully he can pleasantly surprise of few of the naysayers out there
