Sam Webb's Gut Says Shea Patterson Not Going to Transfer to Michigan
November 26th, 2017 at 11:19 PM ^
I mean, Patterson wants to start and that's not a guarantee here. That said, I do think they need to look into adding some depth. What about Keller Chryst from Stanford? He's behind Costello and would have some idea of the offense. Maybe too similar a situation to his current one?
November 26th, 2017 at 11:41 PM ^
...but why would he be interested?
"Hey, Keller...I know you are behind a young QB at your current school. Do you want to come to a new school, where there are two young, non-first year QBs with boatloads of talent, plus experience with the head coach's offense, that you'll need to beat out? How's that interest you?"
Our QBs next year is going to be between Peters and McCaffrey, unless something absolutely shocking and awful happens in terms of an injury (knock on wood).
November 26th, 2017 at 11:48 PM ^
Correct. If anything, I could see us picking up one more recruit to add to the mix. I doubt we'll get a transfer who has any shot of being the starter.
November 26th, 2017 at 11:24 PM ^
on whether or not Shea would have to sit out a year? Isn't that still TBD?
November 27th, 2017 at 12:23 AM ^
into whether Patterson will only transfer if he doesn't have to sit out.
November 27th, 2017 at 7:52 AM ^
Yeah, if he has to sit out for a year I think that would be a dealbreaker from M's perspective. You're basically eating a scholarship year, and Peters would be a RS junior and DM a redshirt sophomore by the time Patterson could play, not to mention Doyle and Milton having a year of development as well.
November 26th, 2017 at 11:25 PM ^
I understand Wilt wanting to go and find somewhere to start. Peters showed flashes but his 97 yards per game isn't exactly an elite measuring stick to show us if he is "The Guy" but I think either him or McCaffrey is. If you lose Malzone I do get nervous about the QB room being that young but so be it I guess. Will be interesting to see who starts in South Bend next September.

I don't think he gives a shit what we think about him. But if the "QB whisperer" can't produce a good QB in 4 years here then he's really not all that great of a QB coach.
November 27th, 2017 at 7:56 AM ^
He made Rudock into a very good QB by the end of 2015.
He coaxed a serviceable performance out of Speight in 2016.
The QB play this season was obviously not very good. But the premise that Harbaugh hasn't been living up to his "QB Whisperer" reputation at M is very dubious.
November 27th, 2017 at 9:11 AM ^
The problem I have is it seems Harbaigh needs a QB with a super high intelligence and athletic ability. Those are pretty rare to come by ..... Luck spoiled him rotten. These guys need to realize the game doesn't need to be NFL-lite at the college level to succeed and coach down to their players instead of expecting them to grasp the nuance of NFL offenses while in college.
November 27th, 2017 at 9:34 AM ^
Eh. I think Harbaugh will be able to consistently find one or two guys per recruiting cycle with the talent level he needs. The potential to find and develop superstar QBs is probably the main reason to believe that Harbaugh can eventually get Michigan into consistent national championship contention..
November 27th, 2017 at 10:57 AM ^
Aren't you at all worried about the fact that both JOK and WS didn't really do much here....or do you think Harbaugh got the most out of them he possibly could? I'm hoping the latter but obviously fear their lack of development is a signal that maybe JH isn't who we thought he was....
November 27th, 2017 at 7:32 AM ^
Slow down.
The reality is that QB recruiting is hit or miss, even for the best coaches/evaluators
There are almost no sure fire QBs. McCaffrey and Peters are pretty close to sure fire very good college QBs as you will find. But even they might end up like Speight 2016 version--good but not great.
JH gets 1 or 2 QBs per cycle, and 4 scholarship QBs in any given year.
Even after several years of superb recruiting, Urban Meyer found himself with a bad QB situation in 2010 at Florida (Brantley). Florida was 7-5 that year. It happens.
JH chose two transfers when he arrived in 2015. One worked out great (Rudock). One did not (O'Korn). At the time O'Korn probaby looked better on film and also has better looking numbers. But O'Korn was never able to get the game to slow down for him.
November 27th, 2017 at 1:32 AM ^
From many accounts McCaffrey was already ahead of Peters going into this season, so in reality it's not as bad as you think.

I'm in the camp that McCaffrey is starting in South Bend next September. 15 months in the weight program, he'll be physically ready. He's been attached to Harbaugh's hip all season for a reason.

Not likely. I could see Eason going to Washington but I doubt he has interest in Michigan. You never know though. Anything could happen I guess.

I, too, thought Peters was showing improvement each week, topped off at WI prior to getting pole axed. And according to Coach Brown, young McCaffrey filled in as opposing team's qb as if he had ran that offense his entire life meaning he's a natural at the position and adapts to his requirments. A strong, strong endorsement. let the uber talented Milton come on, hopefully quick and Harbaugh will have the types of decisions that Carr faced.

Needs(ed) time in the weight room. From what I saw in the Army HS All American game (last time I actually saw him in person) he looked really thin. Got to be able to drill those 25 yard out routes. But a Don Brown endorsement is a very good one.
Despite not having killer stats, the fact that Peters is basically hitting everyone in the chest (except for one derp I recall on 4 & 14 to wide open McKeon) and has about 3 different speeds for the ball shows me his level of talent.

...lose our best player from the OL.... Cole.
Ruiz for Kugler I would call even. The experience Ruiz gained this year
will be invaluable.
Now the tackle positions will be most telling, if Peters will get killed or not.
November 27th, 2017 at 7:00 AM ^
I will call him an upgrade at center. (uninformed opinion)

Would rather have some good beefy transfers to the O-Line. Can we get some of those?
November 27th, 2017 at 1:59 AM ^
can we get a 5th senior Tackle transfer...somebody we could plug in at either Left or Right Tackle !!
November 27th, 2017 at 4:27 AM ^
When has Michigan ever gotten an experienced 5th-year tackle prospect to transfer?
Those that have looked at Michigan ended up going somewhere else.
November 27th, 2017 at 8:49 AM ^
Because they were looking for guaranteed starting time, I believe. I would have promised them that given the fact that OL rotate all day long so who starts shouldn't really matter all that much. May as well get the guy on campus to have the extra body to rotate in and out....couldn't have been worse than Ulizio, frankly.

For the foreseeable future.
GO BLUE!!

I was really surprised how well Doyle looked in his SR film! I would imagine he gets a bump in his rating at the end of the cycle too.
November 27th, 2017 at 2:00 AM ^
Peters
McCaffrey
Milton
Doyle
Deep group, all Harbaugh picked.

so qb lineup next year are a RS Soph, RS Fr, followed by true freshmen, if Malzone leaves too? and people just think a group of inexperienced QB's like that , with an OL that struggled in pass protection, the offense will improve?
I think Speight leaving is bad, bad, bad.

Had Matt Guttierez not torn his labrum in pregame warmups of the opener that year, Henne isn't a 4 year starter. We don't know if Peters or DMC can match a player who still owns multiple school records.

November 27th, 2017 at 8:43 AM ^
WS has hit his ceiling and it wasn't enough to get us where we want to go...have you already forgotten all of the sailed passes to wide open players? That was much less of a problem with Peters. He should be given every chance to lead the team and prove his worth. We don't need the distraction of another transfer QB.
November 27th, 2017 at 2:49 AM ^
Shea Patterson for only one year would be extremely disruptive and delay the development of Peters / McCaffrey.
Peters / McCaffrey don't need another year of practice and sitting on the bench. They need a year of playing experience.
If we've learned anything, it's that practice experience is no substitute for live-fire game experience.
There are no orange shirts in a game. Knowing that makes you play much differently.
