Michigan vs. Florida game did a 5.0 with 182K streams
Per D1Ticker.
The Florida State vs. Alabama game did a 7.3 overnight rating and had a streaming audience of 273K, while the Michigan vs. Florida game did a 5.0 with 182K streams. The games set the highest-rated and most-streamed kickoff weekend and non-prime time kickoff games, respectively, on record for ESPN. (link); SportsBusinessDaily'sOurand reports that "ESPN started a multiplatform marketing push for its ESPN app" and will continue to "roll out various promos and branding" through today. You probably heard on-air talent promoting the effort over the weekend. (link)
It was also very obvious that ESPN is trying to capitalize on the "cutting the cord" wave and pushing their app (which isn't new) all weekend. They did change the format of the app - it looks a lot cleaner, a little more user friendly IMO.

But I also thought this was interesting from D1Ticker this morning. But it wasn't thread worthy IMO.
Pittsburgh FB student-athletes and assistant coaches won't talk to the media before their matchup with Penn State, only HC Narduzzi will handle the duties. (link)

For me the phone app is flawless streaming. The web app or Roku app pauses constantly whenever there is live action.

Yeah, I get a lot of the same...freeze just before the snap, and picture doesn't come back until the ball is downed, as though action is too confusing for it. Yet commercials run flawlessly.

but who is tracking the streaming numbers? I'm suspicious that those numbers come straight from ESPN.

They do as of now, and I share your suspicion. They seem like the type of folks that would count every refresh people did to stop it from buffering instead of how many unique IP addresses viewed.
Or their app is shitty on purpose to frustrate people enough to sign back up for cable. It used to work flawlessly

Stream quality was total garbage on Roku, Nexus Player and Android TV using the WatchESPN app. The best experience I had was streaming WVU/VT from the ESPN app on my phone and casting it to my TV. The picture would get fuzzy occasionally but I didn't get the start-stop-start-stop freezing like on the other devices.
Thankfully I won't have to worry about this again until Purdue. Yay for watching in person.
(BTW, Fox Sports Go app was flawless all weekend and nicely incorporates BTN games into their interface. Very impressed.)

We may have done a 5.0 on tv, but Florida definitely did a #2.0 on the field

They have had their streaming issues for the past few seasons. I have no expectation that they will fix it anytime soon. Whether it be on my laptop, phone (which seems to be the best), roku streaming stick or apple tv.
It's an issue that they are simply ignoring.

I had the fortune of being able to watch our game on TV, but I had other games streaming on the ESPN app - well, I attempted to do so - with highly mixed results. I have fast Internet but also two kids that like to stream everything on every device ever, so maybe that made a difference in the experience here.

But I don't just watch Michigan, as you can see from last nights open thread. I watch as much College Football as possible. So cutting cord is a no go unless it's up to par.

I recall Holly Rowe I think it was telling some bs story about hopping into an elevator and some kids heard the ESPN app and they were all like "hurr hurrr what's that" We all know that didn't happen and ESPN forced you to say that.

What does a 5.0 equate to? I don't know how they derive TV ratings, so that doesn't mean much to me.
