Speight's High Throws

Submitted by Da Fino on

I just watched the replay and the majority of Speight's incompletions were high/long throws.  I get that some might be throw-aways, but many of them weren't even close, especially the ones along the sideline or fades in the back corner of the endzone.  The two picks were high throws, Black's drop in the first quarter was high, and every long-ish sideline toss was overthrown.

It didn't look like he was leaning back and throwing off his back foot because many of those throws he had time to step into them.  Is this a consistent thing with him?  I don't seem to remember so many overthrows in a game last year so hopefully it's an anomaly.

Sleight is an average quarterback. Period. Thus, he will play poorly at times throughout his tenure at Michigan. In my opinion, this is the biggest limitation on the team right now. We need one of the young guys to be truly elite if we hope to catch Alabama in the near future.

There is a reason we keep talking about him and it's because exactly this. He does not impress us. No matter how much we beat around the bush. Speight has a lot of positive intangibles for the QB position but he has average arm talent. It just is what it is.

that Speight is the best option that we have. So, I guess the other QBs must really suck. Therefore, for the rest of the year we get to read comments from UM fans about how bad our quarterback is. You can read these same comments over on RCMB. They don't like our QB either.

dialed in over the next few games.  Also hoping we will be will be putting the next few games away early so perhaps O'Korn and other young receivers will get some reps.  Great game yesterday, but as has been mentioned, there were many opportunities to put the game away earlier than we did, and the defense ultimately put the game away.

to be sure.  I don't know how much of that is last year's bad Speight or first game jitters against a decent defense because he had some really good throws too. I think he will get back to last year's Great Speight form.  This was our first game and, despite suspensions, was not against a weak opponent.  We had receivers hit in the hands dropping balls, we had bad cuts, missed blocks, dumb penalties...  First game stuff.  We were talented enough to overcome thanks to great coaching (thank you Don Brown).   He will have this stuff worked out before Michigan State and be clicking in high gear before Penn State.  They'll be ok.  I thnk by the end, the entire team be more than ready for OSU.

Not trying to give too much wiggle room here for Speight, but how much of this can we attribute to first game of the season and being amped up more than normal. Harbaugh felt that he needed a "reset" after the second pick six, and after that Speight did seem more relaxed.

I have two other thoughts on the issue.

1. Wilton made the correct decisions and reads throughout the game. It wasn't like he tried to jam those throws into triple coverage.

2. Crawford probably should've come down with the first. The second was on Speight. Would our critique be so brutal if he only threw one pick on a physical error (letting the ball sail) rather than what happened in the game with two picks? I'm just saying that Harbaugh praised Speight for a good game aside from the picks, I tend to agree with the coach's assessment.

Throwing into triple coverage wouldn't be Harbaugh's read as a QB. Wilton was taking too much risk in his reads and should play more "within the system". Personally I think this fan base needs to cool it and let the kid be good. Reading all this shit can get to a guy ... "I will prove them wrong" ... and then you go off the game plan with some risky throws and then lose your confidence. First half for Speight was like that to me. His way over the top reaction on the bomb to Black showed he was too amped. Game was a good one to have early for Speight. Now he needs to play within his talents and the system. If he does, team improvement could be outstanding and then watch out world because our defense is elite. Go Blue !

He's got to get his emotions under control.  I think he gets too amped up in big games or moments or something and loses his accuracy and composure.  Just like the pass where Crawford was wide open for a TD he freaked out and chucked it, losing control because he was too excited. He played this way against Wisconsin, Iowa, OSU, FSU and now UF.   Against the lesser teams he appears calm and composed.

Why does everybody think their personal take needs it's own thread? So, what. You watched a replay.

That is not the root of his problem. Nor is atheletic abiliity or "arm talent" (hate that term btw). His problem is that against good teams he doesn't trust his eyes. If he can get out of his own head and go play the game he'll be just fine. In my humble opinion it's all mental. He's guarding against the big mistake so much that the big mistake inevitably finds him.

innaccurate  throws is mental.  I believe he has more than enough arm strength to deliver the ball where it needs to be almost all the time.  And I think he's smart enough and competitive enough to be successful.  So, theoretically, his mental issue is fixable with the right training and coaching.  (How about a hypnotist?)

That is what Speight needs to do.  He had two turnovers, one bad overthrow, one tip.  They weren't bad decisions.  He was makiing good reads and didn't throw into a lot of coverages.  He can bring those balls down and then we will be fine.  Ruddock had trouble with intermediate to long range throws at the start of his senior year, but by the end was playing well.  First game against what should be a very good defense.

Just remember, Craig Krenzel and Tee Martin won National Championships, while Peyton Manning and Tom Brady did not.  You don't have to be the greatest quarterback.  We will need Speight to come up big some times this year.  But he doesn't have to be perfect.

Speight has perhaps plateaued. Great pocket awareness but the ball just doesn't go where he wants it to in some critical situations. We could've said the same thing 1 year ago. The Crawford miss on the wide open td was the same as missing Chesson against FSU or other instances from last year. That being said, there's no QB controversy IMO and he's the best QB on the roster at this moment.
