I keep thinking back that Martin wasn't a take until a couple others dropped out. I mean, jebus!!!

Iowans are still cheesed off about him leaving the state
August 11th, 2017 at 11:54 AM ^
Sam Webb implied that he didn't get an offer from Iowa because he is a white wide receiver from Iowa City and they figured they could get him as a PWO.
So Iowa fans should be upset at their coach and nobody else.

Not sure at what point in the process you heard this said by the reliable Mr Webb but they did offer and wanted him badly. At what point they thought that they could get him as a PWO, I don't know but I'd have to imagine it was pretty early.

talked about it this week. I thought the implied time frame was obvious for anyone who follows recruiting but I will clarify:
Sam didn't mean that Iowa thought they would get Martin as a PWO on signing day - he was talking about the 2 years before he blew up at the 2016 Nike Opening. They could have had this kid locked down before anyone else got involved, but they didn't because they figured they could get him as a PWO or maybe a last minute grab if there was a scholarship available.
Of course, once he started getting big time offers then Iowa went after him hard but it was too late by then.
Read this - Iowa fans were complaining about the lack of interest shown by KF as late as June 2016...

And I wasn't saying they were cheesed off at Martin, they're cheesed off in general at losing him.
Most of the guys I know are pretty smart. They look at Ferentz and say "Yeah, he's well past his prime, but if we dump him, who would we replace him with? Who else could we get, and it's not like a new coach will suddenly start recruiting high star level players to Iowa City (they know there's not much here....save corn)? Who would do a better job of coaching up the 3* talent and making a run every 3 or 4 years for the West?"
Martin was a miss for them, the fans know it, and they're not happy with Kirk, but it's just one more on the tally sheet.
He's still got a TON of goodwill overall, for the most part, because...well, it IS Iowa, and they're just super friendly here for the most part.

He has done a good job keeping them competitive despite their recruiting disadvantages, as you point above.
Now, if he coached every game like he coaches against Michigan, then you would really have something.

I said in another thread, Iowa is known (by the smart fans) for typically winning a game they probably shouldn't (which happened to be us last season), and then losing a game they shouldn't.
That's what drives them nuts about him, he can coach out his ass one game, and the next he just seems to mail it in because he's got the University/City/State by the balls.
Overall, I think he's done a great job with what he's had to work with over the years.

a WR from Chelsea in the mid 90s named Colby Skelton who was also a very talented WR. He was named camper of the week at the UM camp and LLoyd thought he didn't have to give him a scholarship and could get him as a PWO. He went to Harvard instead and had a good career.

He's just showing off to try and win back Halle Berry...

But what about the underthrown ball? /s
August 11th, 2017 at 12:06 PM ^
Pre season rules state that if he makes the catch, the QB meant to put it there. Great throw.

MAN! we have some serious athletes at that position. Pick your poison

Bah. The catch was fine but he didn't even get into the end zone. Not impressed.

that was a horrible, horrible, short, short ball that Peters threw without being pressured right there. I mean, that was supposed to be a fade, right?
August 11th, 2017 at 11:49 AM ^
Looks like an 18 on the jersey to me. If so, I wouldn't be too worried about the throw since he's only a true freshman.

You might be right that the pass was horrible but we also look for guys to make plays out of nothing. That was Oliver Martin making a play and that is what we hope for.

The word you're looking for is grab ;)
August 11th, 2017 at 12:00 PM ^
was actually Mason Cole just erasing Mo Hurst at the beginning.
August 11th, 2017 at 12:15 PM ^
Gentry(!) also puts a nice block on Kemp. Completely holding, but TEs do this every play.
Runyan is pulling from RG in that video. JBB still with the first team at RT.
August 11th, 2017 at 12:01 PM ^
Great grab, but I came in thinking he caught a pass behind his back, which would've been greaterer.

Here's a generic video of Mason Cole talking about the offense gelling and focusing...oh and by the way, here's a clip of a true freshman Oliver Martin making an absurd catch which we will show you but not acknowledge whatsoever

Pretty cool catch. But I have to admit I was expecting a more basketball-style Adrian-Arrington in the Capitol One Bowl type of behind the back cacth.
