OT: '17-'18 Depth Chart: Version 3 ("Kum-Ba-Yah Edition")

Submitted by Mr. Yost on

Posting this for one reason. Because too much of the talk on the board today is trying to place blame.

I already know this thread likely isn't going to go over well - but, it's time to look forward. If you have snowflakes, put them in the Snowflake threads below. You can place your feelings there for everyone to read if he/she chooses.

Bad loss, and I too feel like shit, but crying about it and blaming players on the team or fighting over legacy isn't going to help or change anything (in a positive manner).

There isn't one guy on that team or associated with that program that didn't do everything he could to win that game last night. Not one.

Notes:

  1. He's coming back, dammit.
  2. I don't know the EE freshman, so I can't really predict who's going to play and who isn't. It's Decemeber of the year before...I really don't care at this point. The EE's will obviously have a leg up on the rest.
  3. I realize this is Michigan-related and technically not "OT" - but it's still way too far away to be ON topic, IMO...just some fantasy to take your mind off of yesterday's game.
  4. I realize we're likely going to have 1 more QB transfer.
  5. I will try and go back and update this throughout the year to keep it as current as possible.

I could easily see Isaac gettin the firm handshake from Harbaugh.  Evans and Higdon have been the secondary options the last half of the season, and with Walker ready to get some carries next season and maybe some of the freshman, I don't see a place on the roster for Ty.

I think Dawson and Kugler stay for depth.  Unless their technique is just so bad that they rub off the wrong way on the younger guys.  Then maybe its firm handshake time for them as well.

I saw O'Korn said somewhere last night that he's planning on returning.

Love the Crawford, P-J, McDooooommm group of receivers for the next 2-3 years! And those TEs. Receiving corps should be quite good. Would be nice to see us develop more receiving from the RB spot too

that OL is terrifying as is DL depth.  Without a big jump in playmaking from QB, RB, WR I don't see why next year goes any different than this year which is a good team that isn't truly elite.

And I was screaming at people for prioritizing other guys over him in the thread yesterday.

No. We need playmakers. Just like Dalvin Cook.

You take Najee over an OT and DT even those are HUGE needs. He's the #1 player in the COUNTRY. You take him and make him the #1 priority.

DPJ is that playmaker at WR...#11 player in the country.

Gary will be a playmaker...look at Peppers. You have to have these top 10 talents sprinkled in throughout your roster.

The problem is they're all so young. It's going to take some time.

It was about priority. "Take" Najee over (insert name). A little confusing after I re-read.

There was a thread yesterday about ranking the guys on our board in terms of priority and a bunch of people were saying Filiaga and Solomon/Tufele should be prioritized over Najee Harris.

Those positions are a bigger NEED than RB - no question.

But those players are in no way, shape, or form a bigger priority over the #1 player in the country.

That whole thread confused me the other day.  I have no idea how you can watch Michigan this season or any of the last several seasons and prioritize anyone above someone like Najee Harris.  All-world running backs can make even the dumbest offense or mediocre offensive line look MUCH better.

I mean, take FSU last night.  That's not a great OL, and Francois is all kinds of iffy, but Cook single-handedly changed that game.

So next year, when 8-4 happens, do the top guys see that "they're young, it's all going to be okay"? Or do the top recruits listen to the idiots on espn and the likes saying Michigan is back to being the way they have been for the last ten years? Because espn is definitely going to be talking shit, but guarantee they won't preface it with, "look out, they're coming in 2018." Michigan needs immediate impact players.

I keep wondering if we'll see Onwenu back on the DL for spring ball, especially if neither Tufele or Solomon come to AA.

Assuming Gary sticks at DE, Michigan's DT's next season are Mone, Hurst, and then Dwumfour and true freshman Phillip Paea.

Gary could move inside though if guys like Winovich, Johnson, Kemp, and/or Marshall can step up, but personally, I'd rather he be at DE with Mone and Hurst in the middle and then whomever wins the other DE spot.

Not looking promising at all...I mean who on that list can you really have any confidence in outside of perhaps Cole and even he looked better as an OT last year. Bredeson got rocked last night, Onwenu has some hype but no experience and the rest never cracked this average lineup or did so and were mediocre at best (JBB). I'm all for looking at the bright side, and the rest of the roster has promise, but OL seems bleak.

I'm not sure what to think of where the team will be next year. My early feeling is probably 8-4/9-3

Florida, @PSU, @Wisconsin, and OSU will be the four games that decide the season but I don't see any other real trap games (like @Iowa this year) on the schedule. If I'm being realistic I'd say we probably go 3-1 against that slate at best. Probably more likely 1-3 or 2-2

He's a C. He can get a lot of reps in practice. He doesn't need to get mop up duty snaps against someone elses 3rd team.

Have him go up against Mone and Hurst full speed. That will be a lot more impactful.

He's a C and a 5th year is HUGE in most cases. If he's a skill position, get his toes wet. But at C? Redshirt him if you can.

You can also have him as your 2nd team C in practice and just not play him in games. If Cole went down, you put him in and he's already been practicing on something other than scout team. He knows the gameplan, etc.

Using Alabama as an example of proving your point is not necessarily valid because that program has had much more depth on the line than we currently have so most of their guys redshirt. Let's wait and see where Cole is playing before we say whether Ruiz will redshirt or not.

Mr. Yost

The point is..if he's good enough to play. You play him. He can start at LG or RG and get a year of experience.

But you don't burn a redshirt putting him in during mop-up time just to get him experience.

As I said in my original post to this coversation...he'd be better off facing Hurst and Mone in practicing than getting 2 drives late in a game up 4 TDs.
