OT: '17-'18 Depth Chart: Version 3 ("Kum-Ba-Yah Edition")

Submitted by Mr. Yost on

Posting this for one reason. Because too much of the talk on the board today is trying to place blame.

I already know this thread likely isn't going to go over well - but, it's time to look forward. If you have snowflakes, put them in the Snowflake threads below. You can place your feelings there for everyone to read if he/she chooses.

Bad loss, and I too feel like shit, but crying about it and blaming players on the team or fighting over legacy isn't going to help or change anything (in a positive manner).

There isn't one guy on that team or associated with that program that didn't do everything he could to win that game last night. Not one.

Notes:

  1. He's coming back, dammit.
  2. I don't know the EE freshman, so I can't really predict who's going to play and who isn't. It's Decemeber of the year before...I really don't care at this point. The EE's will obviously have a leg up on the rest.
  3. I realize this is Michigan-related and technically not "OT" - but it's still way too far away to be ON topic, IMO...just some fantasy to take your mind off of yesterday's game.
  4. I realize we're likely going to have 1 more QB transfer.
  5. I will try and go back and update this throughout the year to keep it as current as possible.

The conventional wisdom about Becton drives me crazy. We already have 4 OT commits plus the projected Filiaga. Using 6 scholarships for OTs is a waste. Someone is going to leave without ever making a significant contribution.

As much as Harbaugh loves and uses TEs it would make more sense to take a TE. Josh Falo (#4) hasn't committed yet. ND's 1st and 3rd highest rated commitments are the #2 and #3 ranked TEs. MSU has a 4* TE we took a long look at (Matt Dotson #8). We have several TEs already but it makes sense to take one every year if you're going to use 5 per game.

247 disagrees with you. They have extensive separate listings for OT and OG. Last year, Bredeson, Onwenu and Terrance Davis were all considered OG. Harbaugh slow played Davis for that reason while he hunted for an OT. All 3 played OG this year (Davis started all year at MD), although Bredeson played some OT due to necessity. This year we went after Hainsley and Slaton with an eye towards them playing OG.

Guys can play both - see Mason Cole - but foot movement, body shapes and sizes give an indication where a player will fit best.

We still need someone at OG for depth. It wouldn't bother me at all to take a Slaton if we can get him. It will make me happy if we can find another OT who can start next year. Becton, ranked the #41 OT, isn't that guy.

Every year a bunch of guys with the tackle distinction move to other line positions. Im aware that 247 has guys separated into positions based on what they believe suits them best.

On 247: Kalis OT, Bredeson OT, Braden OT

First three I checked all have played gaurd and  many more

I would say Clark would play CB if given a 6th year...I think IF Peppers comes back, he starts at Safety (what he will play in the NFL)...I'm excited for these young guys and I do not think this 2017 team will be as good as 2016 but the results could still be better (just like OSU was this year)

Based on his success this past fall and his early enrollee status Hawkins should be penciled in as a real contributor. Can anyone list off our early enrollees for certain? My list I've put together based on multiple sources, sites, podcasts etc is:
WR Donovan People's-Jones
WR Tarik Black
WR Brad Hawkins
OC Caesar Ruiz
OT JaRaymond Hall
DT Phillip Paea
DE Donovan Jeter
DE Corey Malone-Hatcher
LB/FB Ben Mason
S/Viper Jalen Kelly-Powell
CB Benjamin St Juste
CB Ambry Thomas
S J'Marick Woods

And 1 podcast said Kurt Taylor is but I don't think he is. Like I said this isn't the official list, looking for someone to confirm

He's not coming back. Any sliver of hope that might happen was destroyed las night with what happened to Butt. What happened to Butt is the worst nightmare scenario for a guy that stays, and seeing thar happen first hand to a teammate is going to be ok Peppers' mind as he makes that decision.

Look across the field. There was a guy who was a first round pick and probably INCREASED his stock in a big game last night. He didn't get hurt.

And the Butt logic also doesn't make sense because we're talking about an entire season...not a bowl game.

He could sit out the bowl game next year and use Butt as the reason. But you can't use "I may get hurt" as the excuse, IMO.

So, so, so, so, so many of Hoke's O-Line recruits have been complete busts. Either on the field or off the field. I'd like to look at the statistics of just how many coaches have gotten that many 4-star (and 5-star) recruits with such miserable retention and conversion rates.

Is it the 2013 O-line class that literally had 4 different 4-stars OL that were either kicked off the team, left the team, or are back-ups to underclassmen?

Because it's soooo early, I have no inside info so all of this is literally just a guess. I don't claim to know any more than anyone else on the board and there isn't enough info out there (practice buzz, insider info, spring practice videos, etc.) to even form an opinion.

Once we finish the recruiting class, we know who's returning and who isn't (NFL and 5th years), and we start spring practice and get an idea of position switches and off-season progress...THEN I usually remove the OT tag. Until then, I kind of consider it my fantasy thoughts that I like to post just to have something to daydream about.

UMBig11 has indicated that two players on that list are seeking transfers.  And I see at least four more that I could easily see not coming back next year, and that's not even counting Peppers.

Agreed. But I don't like removing them until they're gone.

People get upset over it and the whole thread can get off track. But I mentioned it above.

There are also some 5th years that won't make it. I'll be honest, I'm hoping David Dawson isn't one of them. One, he can play and if he's the "floor" we're in decent shape. Two, he provides depth. But three...he and Khalid Hill would be two leaders. He's great friends with Hill, brothers.

That said, I understand it's a business...just a personal "hope."

Morris already gone.

I'd say O'Korn and Isaac likely both have looong conversation that need to be had with Harbaugh. Tough if you're going to be a backup, but you're always 1 play away.

Malzone is another one and this KILLS depth at QB if O'Korn is also gone. We can lose one, but we really need one as well.

Dawson and Kuglar both have long coversations ahead with Harbaugh as well. We need both of them, IMO.

Someone said something about Kingston Davis awhile back. Zach Gentry's name has also been mentioned. I'm not sure where Mo Ways is as far as graduation.

We lose so much on defense that everyone needs to come back. Shelton Johnson, Lawrence Marshall, and Rueben Jones haven't played much...but all 3 can make a HUGE move this spring.
