John O'Korn to the forefront [Eric Upchurch]

Per a source, Wilton Speight has broken his collarbone and is out for the remainder of the regular season. Depending on the exact nature of the issue it is possible he could return for the bowl game.

FWIW, when Tony Romo broke his collarbone last year he was projected to be out eight weeks, and was supposed to be out 6-8 after collarbone surgery in May. Speight had a bad collarbone break in high school—that's why he's a year older than most of his class—and may be in line for a similar surgery.

Michigan will almost certainly go with John O'Korn in Speight's stead; in scattered snaps this year he's 13/18 for 114 yards and two TDs. O'Korn's mobile enough to incorporate some designed QB runs, so we've got that going for us.

Horrible news, horrible for Wilton, the team and all of us but I have complete confidence that Jim, Jedd Fisch and Tim Drevno will have John O'Korn fully prepared and ready to lead this team!

Nothing to lose now, now pressure and he has a full year of experience at Houston where he lit it up.

We'll go in as underdogs with a sweet defense...maybe the kid catches fire.

A 75 percent Speight against OSU vs 100 percent O'Korn is a wash. He's been a very solid QB all year, but he's been asked to not make mistakes and just play within the system and let the defense do the work.

At this point, go ahead and open it up and see what O'Korn can do. If anything, he's got more big-game experience than Wilton.

Alright, it is now O'Korn's chance to take the reins and shine.

Devastating to lose Wilton and I feel bad for him as he was really playing well, but good programs can weather blows like this and I believe Michigan is building a good program.

Unsurprising but disappointing. Still, O'Korn has not looked out of his depth in his backup time. I may be doom and gloom if he is horrible against Indiana but I don't really see that happening.

Speight has been average, excellent and poor. He beat out O'Korn, but not by much, and you don't truly see who a QB is until he plays in a real game. Let's see what happens.

Speight has done a good job this year.  Hopefully Okorn can justify all of tne angst that many fans have had about Speight playing instead of him.

Time for Harbaugh, the QB whisperer, to work his magic.

Half of this board wanted O'Korn to play at the beginning of the year, so let's see what the kid has got. Also, we can't panic now! We still have an elite defense and weapons galore on offense. In the words of the great KG: "ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE!!!!"

I agree that "drive the field" wasn't an accurate term, but we still let Iowa gain two first downs on running plays, putting them into chip-shot range. To me, "elite" means you stuff them without a first down. Now maybe they still hit a long 50-yarder or whatever it would have been, but allowing them to get to the Michigan 15 didn't get the job done.

Most UM fans thought going into the 2006 game with OSU that our defense was elite, but that game and the subsequent disaster against USC in the Rose Bowl proved it wasn't.

However, the defense played well enough to win anyhow, because allowing 12 points should have been good enough to win the game against this Iowa team. This loss is on the offense and special teams.

on the basis of consistency and his ability to make the right reads and otherwise limit mistakes.  On the other hand O'Korn has more physical talent outside the pocket and has a strong arm.  Look for some excitement from him with more mistakes.  Could be interesting.  I think we'll be okay.

I've been dreading that damn Iowa game since last summer when I saw it was scheduled as a night game -- we just have bad juju at Kinnick. Losing the game was bad enough, but losing our starting QB 9 games into a potential CFP season ... argh.

That said, I can't imagine having a much better situation at backup QB. This isn't Russ Bellomy or Nick Sheridan we're talking about -- i'ts a guy with two years in the system with legit starting experience at a Division I program, and he's got two weeks to get ready for OSU. My confidence in this coaching staff has dimmed a bit after the shitshow on Saturday night, but I'm still confident they'll have O'Korn as prepared as he can possibly be. Let's hope the kid embraces the moment.

Welp. This isn't good.

When I saw Harbaugh's comment about game-time decision, I had a feeling this was the outcome. A non-throwing shoulder injury is either something painful but workable, like a bruise, which wouldn't be any question for this weekend... or a bone, probably the clavicle, which is catastrophe. If Harbaugh wasn't sure Speight was starting, that probably meant a break was involved, and that's curtains for the regular season.

This is not good. Speight was the guy, and while his performance at Iowa was lacking, his progression was the best hope we had of winning in Columbus. That chance looks... smaller now.
