Hype Train: SI picks UM for Playoff and puts Peppers on regional cover
http://www.si.com/college-football/2016/08/09/sports-illustrated-cover-michigan-clemson-ucla-houston
"Michigan, UCLA, Clemson and Houston each have their own cover, with SI’s experts projecting two of those programs to reach the College Football Playoff.
The Michigan cover, featuring Jabrill Peppers—who is profiled by Andy Staples in the magazine—will be sent to in Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Delaware, Connecticut, Maryland, Washington DC, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, Wisconsin, South Dakota, Nebraska and Eastern Missouri."

Crap. SI cover jinx is scary and consistent.

I assure all of you professional analysts it's quite random. How many teams make an S.I. cover every pre start of season and don't win a title? Wow, sit and spin on that geniuses.

2012
OSU had a player on it the last two years. They did fine.

/cracks beer
So SI batted .500 on this issue.
Side note: For the disrespekt clan up in EL, I see MSU in the Top 10 on that cover, not Michigan. And we returned our starting QB that season coming off a Sugar Bowl win. Sparty did not return their starting QB. Seems that people were giving them benefit of the doubt (respect).
Probably why they went 7-6.

Me too. It feels like it was the last cover to have Michigan on it for the right reason. All the ones since then have been about disasters or resurrecting the program from the abyss.
smashmouth beating. can't wait for the next installment
It wasn't even as close as the score, and the score was not close.
If Braylon's long touchdown doesn't get called back for a bullshit penalty, it would have been (I think) 35-7 and the rout would have been on...

No SEC team on any regional cover.
I bet the ESPN magazine doesn't have that problem.

But I'm refusing to let myself think playoff until:
I see a QB playing well during live meaningful snaps
We beat MSU
We beat OSU
After the clock hits 0 and we have fucking beaten Ohio State then I will direct my attention to bigger and better things.

I'm all set with the off-season victories (Uniforms, rap videos, etc.).
Get it done.

Last night the talking heads of the local ESPN radio affiliate, FM 103.3 in Dallas, were discussing college football and the consensus quickly became the desire to see Michigan and Alabama square off in either a playoff or championship game.
I would be all-in on the conspiracy theories to make that a reality. I don't think there's a matchup that people would want to see more. While people would be focused on the coaching matchup, I'd be more interested in seeing us on the same field with D. Hand and Damien Harris.
All officials have to do is the exact opposite of what they've done to us the last 50 years.

Got an email about it from 247. Said "Peppers dons cover of Sports Illustrated."
I think they meant adorns.

It can be done. Harbaugh won 10 games, and it should've been 11, with a team that went 5-7 the year before. Most everyone is coming back, and they'll be a year better.
The road to the playoffs goes through EL, Iowa City and Columbus, but if we come out of that on the other side and make it in, we'll have earned it.
To hell with it. Not saying it won't be a challenge, but why not have high expectations?
Peppers won't be wearing Adidas so NO jinx.
I hate the hype. In 1997, we were ranked outside the top 15. Michigan does best when it flies under the radar.
Having said that, I believe in the submarine.
SI has Bama, Clemson, FSU and UM in the Final 4. But Clemson and FSU are in the same division in the same conference. That means that one of the two won't even play in their conference playoff game.
Looks like SI's crystal ball is more of a dart board.
Just 5 years ago in the 2011-2012 season, it was Alabama vs LSU from the same division, and that was with just 2 teams making it in. If Clemson's only loss is at FSU and they destroy everyone else, it could happen.
The difference is that Clemson and FSU are from a conference that's pretty mediocre other than those two. Alabama had three other wins over teams that were in the top 25 at the time (although only one, Arkansas finished in the top 25), and utterly destroyed everyone else on their schedule. In addition, the only other one-loss P5 teams in 2011, Oklahoma State and Stanford, each had a really bad loss (Oklahoma State to Iowa State, and Stanford by 23 at home to Oregon).
Other than FSU, Clemson's best games are probably either @Auburn or Louisville. FSU's best games other than Clemson are probably @Louisville, @Miami, or Florida. None of those games are likely to provide either team with the signature win it would need to overcome a loss and missing its conference championship game.
Not saying it couldn't happen, but it sure isn't very likely.
Does't the new playoff format say something about conference champions?
The College Playoff Committee is charged with identifying the four best FBS teams and seed them 1 through 4. There is currently no reference to conference championship.
Phil Steele also picked both FSU and Clemson to make the final 4. It's a gutsy prediction because there's a high likelihood that it won't happen. Two teams from the same conference? Doubt it.
We are officially doomed.
with Deshaun Watson on the cover.
What? No comment about Jabril's ACL?
*puts fingers in ears*
LA LA LA LA LA I CAN'T HEAR YOU
Being picked by SI to make the championship playoff, and having that stated on the cover, is a positive development.
until this.
