O'Korn or Speight: who ya got?

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Stunned we haven't had this thread yet.

I say O'Korn. The mobility is what gives him the edge for me. Rudock had mobility last year, but O'Korn is even quicker.

Would it be out there to think that we could TRY a little read option stuff with Peppers at RB?

Kaep threw 3 interceptions in 13 games under Harbaugh, he wasn't exactly turnover prone.  Interceptions were O'Korn's biggest issue at Houston.  You hope it goes away but if it doesn't Harbaugh is going to choose Speight because he'd rather average 350 yds a game with no interception than 500 with 2 interceptions.  At least that is my opinion.

if we average 350 yards of passing a game this year, even with 1 interception a game, we will be looking at a playoff game, IMO.  If our offense is even close to that good, we're golden. For reference, Mr. Rudock averaged ~250 yds a game, though he only threw 9 picks in 13 games.

I think OKorn knows well what Harbaugh and Fisch want from the position from being in the system and rooming with Rudock last year.  He knows that if he wants the job it's ball security first.  Harbaugh's passing game tends to make reads and throws easier for QB's and minimizes risk.  Especially if our run game can take even a tiny step forward (which you gotta believe it will), I can see OKorn excelling by playing within the system, hitting the open guy and making a play with his legs when it's not there.

My hope is the JOK gets himself ready, proves he's the guy to can run the offense effectively and has a huge year throwing to Butt, Chesson and Darboh and picking chunks, TD's and first downs with his legs.

Either way we should have a great back up and it will be needed this year.

which of the two is more mistake prone in August practice.

I include in mistakes not only interceptions and inaccurate throws, but also failing to properly read the defense, failure to check into the right play, and failure to get to the third receiver option when called for.

O'Korn has the stronger arm and is a better runner.  But if he cannot close the 'mistake gap' in August, then Speight will start against Hawaii.

Maybe JH will choose O'Korn even if he is more mistake prone in August, so long as JH is convinced that after 4 or 5 starts he can make O'Korn a better decision-maker.

Maybe it depends on the kind of mistakes O'Korn makes, and how quickly (if at all) JH thinks that real games can be used to fix them.

Who was he going to put in?  O'Korn couldn't play due to the transfer.  Who knows what was going on with Morris.  Speight, while he threw the TD pass in the Minny game(?), looked not ready for prime time for the most part.  it was kind of Rudock or bust last year.

This year at least it appers there will be an alternative should the starter struggle.

Whomever it is will be the best version of themselves under Harbaugh. I'll say both. JH has never been shy to make changes during the season even when changing from someone who is good.

so if we do read option, it would probably be with someone not named O'Korn or Speight. A 1.4 ypc  avg his freshman year, followed up by a half a yard a tote the next season isn't going to frighten too many DCs into prepping for such an attack.

I realize those figures ares skewed due to sacks, but that in itself should dislodge such notions. He is more athletic than Wilton but Wilton is about as athletic as Navarre.

As to the starter, given the fact Harbaugh actively pursued him, or so it's been written, I will agree with your guess.

I thought that too. His thinking seemed to be: "was highly rated recruit, therefore gets first crack at being the starter." Case in point, Derrick Green. Was highly rated, kept getting ineffectual snaps until Smith and Johnson forced their way into the lineup.

I believe it will be O'Korn. I think his deep ball is much better than Speight's. I just hope he hangs in the pocket a little longer instead of choosing to run so soon as he did in the spring game.

If he becomes the starter then fine, best man wins.  All I've heard all offseason from seemingly 90% of this board is that O'Korn while everyone kind of pussy foots around it if they really think he's the best option, will win the starting job.  So we've heard the rumblings of last year that O'Korn looked the best when he was on the scout team.  So what?  Speight looked decidedly better in the Spring game and has more potential to show than O'Korn does.  O'Korn doesn't have the feel in the pocket like Speight does and don't let your early observations of Speight fool you.  His release has gotten rocket fast under Harbs and is throwing a crisp ball.  I don't see a big arm from O'Korn and quite frankly not a lot of poise aka the same stuff I saw in both years of his film at Houston.  Different situation, Harbaugh, Pro Style I get that, but everyone now has that advantage.  I don't mean to be so negative but like I said seemingly everyone has given O'Korn the pass on the starting job bc you all fell in love with the whole best qb on the team last season rumblings.  While I don't doubt those rumblings, that was last season and O'Korn had 2 years of actual game experience under his belt, Speight had basically none, plus O'Korn has been in college a season extra too.  I'd expect O'Korn to hit the ground running faster than Speight last year.  So, combined with what I saw in the Spring Game which showed me Speight's potential skillset and O'Korn's reluctance to stay in the pocket(granted makeshift line yes) I going for Speight between these 2.  Hell it could be Peters for all we know.  Kid showed some serious tools in his limited snaps.  Think about the muscle he's put on over the summer and the extra reps he's taken since April albeit just throwing sessions.
