OT: Best new music you have discovered in the last year

Submitted by Blue Baughs on

Judgement free zone here. Just curious what new music everyone here has been listening to, and what about that band do you enjoy.

The only new band ive had any real interest in has been Silversun Pickups. Mostly because i have always had a thing for rock bands that use alot of distortion to create an emotional layer to their music. They arent ground breaking artists or anything, just remind me of listening to older Smashing Pumpkins a little bit.

Now your turn, give me some of your personal new favorites. Hopefully we can all broaden our musical horizons a little bit.

The Head and the Heart, started liking it after seeing Bluefoot Creative's work with it as the soundtrack. An northwest indie folk rock sort of feel. I also like Radical Face, but that began several years back.

So I was going down nostalgia road the other day and was listening to mmmbop for some reason (cause it is a catchy song, ya know?) and I found out that Hanson is still a band and they are still making music. They have some pretty decent new stuff. If you're curious check out Get the Girl Back off of their most recent album Anthem, or Thinking 'Bout Something from the album Shout It Out. It's a little poppy, a little rocky, but also a little funky. They've got some horns and stuff.

Also San Fermin. They're weird, but make some decent music if you're into kinda slower stuff with some dark themes and creepy music. Their male singer has a very deep voice that kinda reminds me of the Crash Test Dummies, and their lead female singer has a pretty impressive range. If you want a friendly song from them listen to Jackrabbit from their recent album of the same name, if you want weird creepy dissonant baroque style music then listen to pretty much anything else from them. They also put on a kickass live show. So see them if they're coming to your town.

Edit: Creepy sounds a little off-putting, so instead I'd like to describe San Fermin's music as "hauntingly beautiful".

Darlingside

4 young men from Williams College and now out of Boston.  Stunned the audience with the quality of musicianship.   Best harmonies ever.

Not in any way new, but within the last year I discovered a undergound hip hop duo from Boston, 7L and Esoteric, that is absolutely great and I've been listening to semi-obsessively.

Also, Ghost (or Ghost BC if you're searching on itunes).  Great metal band that just started to get biggish this year.  Sound is best described as "Satanic Blue Oyster Cult".

LOL - not sure if you are trying to get people to hate on you or not - but all of those dudes are guilty pleasures of mine. YOu ever check out Three Loco - Andy Milenokis, Riff Raff, and Diplo? Amazing.

Lil Dicky - $ave Dat Money feat. Fetty Wap and Rich Homie Quan - might be one of the most amazing video ideas ever! https://youtu.be/yvHYWD29ZNY

Absolutely amazing album, so glad someone else out there is listening.  Got to meet a couple of the guys when they were touring last November, too.  Cool dudes.

Also, props on the ISIS profile pic

(That's ISIS the band, for everyone that doesn't listen to post metal)

Rebirth Brass Band - was able to catch a show in New Orleans on a recent trip, awesome to catch this classic NO brass band live.
Also saw Of Monsters and Men in GR a few weeks ago and found them to have a very unique sound that was thoroughly entertaining.

Best two stations I've heard in awhile. Pop those on anytime you are in a car, you'll find something new.

Claptone, Kygo, Cubicolor, Robin Schulz, Bob Moses. Great stuff.

Mutoid Man. I am a HUGE fan of Cave In, and their singer fronts this band as well. I guess you might call it a little stoner-metal-ey. But it's all awesome.

Far and away, Vulfpeck, Ann Arbor product which only makes it that much better. They're total music nerds and their bassist has serious chops. They've still got a ways to go before being a complete product but they've got some serious potential. They're videos are great too. Tons of free content to check out on You Tube

Her self-titled album, released in 2014 (but newer to me).

Also REALLY looking forward to Prophets of Rage, especially if they release new material.

When I'm having a miserable day at work I like to put something on Sirius that I would never otherwise listen to.  I had reserved that preset for the 40's channel but I was rewatching the Deadwood series and found that I liked the music that usually ended the show.

I put the Bluegrass channel in 40's place and find myself listening to it more and more.  It's very strange because I don't care for country music.

but I found myself listening to Run the Jewels a lot more recently. Also, if you like(or don't ) hip hop, Murals by Lupe Fiasco is amazing.
