In retrospect: Do you wish OSU had beat MSU, or no?

Submitted by StephenRKass on

So, now that the regular season is over, do you wish OSU had beat MSU, or that things stay just as they happened?

For me personally, OSU is the real rival and enemy. Their schadenfreude at losing in Columbus, and not having a shot at the NC, and having Meyer's string of conference victories broken, is sweet enough. It is hard choosing between OSU and MSU. How could you want either team to win? But for me, not living in Michigan, not dealing with Sparty regularly, and not wanting OSU to even have the opportunity at another NC, trumps hatred for Sparty. Maybe it is personal, because I have in-laws who are OSU fans.

Nonetheless, I think that the Spartans are likely to be beaten sometime in the next month. And I believe that with Harbaugh's recruiting acumen, we will right the ship in terms of MSU quickly. OSU will be a harder nut to crack, and at this point, I am happy for anyone to beat them.

p.s.  Some think that if OSU had beaten MSU, Michigan might have snuck up and beat OSU. I personally think that is delusional, and that OSU would have been prepared for Michigan regardless of the outcome the week prior.

is going to beat MSU by 2 or 3 touchdowns. You might not be old enough to remember but ole Kirk does this every once in a while. They play good fundamental football..and they have always been able to punish MSU's over aggresive defense and they will again this week.

Define "right the ship quickly against MSU".....  I hate Sparty like poison, but the idea that they are going to slip back and stay there just because Harbaugh continues to build this program is not something that common sense allows me to agree with.  We are going to win some games, but there will be no more dominance (by either side) as long as Dantonio is there.

Sparty won't just go away.  But we've already shown that we can take care of business against them.  We won't win every game, but that's always been true.  We'll win 2/3 or 3/4 like we used to.

OSU momentum is the biggest threat to us and they have it in spades.  It does us no good to have OSU in the Playoff and potentially winning it again.  And they play a style of offense that makes that quite possible against Clemson, Oklahoma, and even Alabama.

I'm more glad that OSU is out of the playoff than I am sad that MSU is (likely) in the Playoff.

Of course, Iowa could do us all a solid and make this a moot point.

I know it's different for everyone but I see OSU as our most hated rival by a long shot.  Maybe it's because I've had friends and family members that have attended MSU but I just don't look at them nearly as bad as OSU.  Or maybe it's because the majority of their fans are over the top obnoxious and classless.  OSU is the one school in the Big Ten that I just can't root for...no matter the circumstances.  The thought of them potentially winnnig two NC in a row would have been too much to stomach.

I also feel like OSU has a much better chance of actually winning the playoff whereas I see MSU as an underdog in the semifinal and the final regardless of matchups. Because I don't want either rival to win the title I'd rather see MSU make the playoff than OSU.

Also, we can hope that Iowa wins in Indy and neither rival makes the playoff. This is ideal.

1. Wish we had beat MSU,

2. Wish OSU had beat MSU

3. Wish every team on MSU's schedule had beat MSU

But at least it's fun to remind the Staee fans that in their "best season evah" they sold out 2 games, Oregon and CMU. That is their disrespekt right there...

Yes. Having a shot at the title is better than not having a shot at the title.

I don't care if OSU might still have gashed us. If there's a 1 in 10 chance of us winning the B1G, I want that.

Just hope we have good practice for the bowl game and the seniors have a good last game. Sad what happened in their last game at the big house but sometimes life is like that.

if Iowa beats MSU, and one of the top 3 loses, who will move into the top 4? If it's OSU, I would hate for them to have another chance at a championship, but just think of the disrespekt MSU would feel by having OSU jump them into the top 4. If you think our Sugar Bowl appearance had them upset, just imagine what this scenario would do to them, and I think it has a greater than 0% chance of happening.

MSU would have a second loss in that scenario where OSU just has the one-- which is a key distinction between that and what happened in 2011.  I got into it with some Sparty friends over that and never understood their argument-- I think any Michigan fan would have traded that Sugar Bowl spot for a shot at the B1G championship and the Rose Bowl.

...they likely jump OSU.  The CFP swears that they value conference championships, so that should vault Stanford over them.  It's the same logic that would have vaulted us over those 1-loss Big 12 teams that didn't win their conference.

Either way, go Hawkeyes.

I think the worst thing is that we were a ridiculously flukey play away from winning that game. MSU doesn't deserve to be there. Our game against OSU should have been to get into the B1G championship game.

OSU's been to the mountaintop so if they stay up there another year nothing much has changed.  For MSU to beat us on The Fluke, beat the OSU "hibernating bear, oh crap you stole my honeypot now i must kill everyone" edition, have their loss to Nebraska essentially not count, and now only to face a who-knows-how-good Iowa team for their own shot at the CFP....that just irks man.

So yes, still wish OSU had won.

Honestly.. I wish OSU beat Sparty by 50. Reason 1 There is a lot more annoying ass state fans near me then Buckeyes. Reason 2 I think we all expect OSU to be successful. But this Spartan success is rather annoying. Reason 3 Danronio and Izzo. Respect them all you want. Those guys are creeps. Reason 4 Spartan slappy media is all over the place. Valenti, Caputo, Rico, gator, rexrode all blow. Reason 5 it's Michigan State

I haven't given up on Iowa beating Sparty on Saturday although they are a 3.5 point underdog. I have considerably less dislike for Iowa than I do for either OSU or MSU.

What happened has happened. I'd like Iowa to win this Saturday so MSU is kept out of the playoffs. If Michigan can't get 'in', I sure don't want our rivals to go either.

seen OSU beat MSU. A lot of air came out of me (yes, there's a lot) watching the end of that game while waiting for a table in State College. Though I've been in a funk recently as have many of you, recent events are going to lead to even greater things for Michigan Athletics. Last Saturday's game is the jump the shark moment for tOSU Football. I know I'll be downvoted but I really do believe it. Either way Michigan is greatness and the past few weeks are small bumps in the road.

is difficult. I hate State and OSU on different levels; the hatred has slight variance. I hate State because of their fanbase, their hypocrisy, Dantonio's smirk, some unclassy behavior by coach and players, and the bandwagon that is swelling with green, and the fact they have two sellouts in a year. I hate OSU because of the long tradition that demands it; because I was raised that way; because Ohio is boring, smelly, and filled with jackasses with truck driver and waitress educations; because of their crooked head coach, crooked program, and general arrogance. The intensity of hate for me has shifted in favor of sparty; like that mosquito that keeps nailing me and I can't swat it, versus that deep hatred for OSU, and for which re-establishing winning requires patience, method, faith  and perseverance. Somehow, the immediacy of righting the record versus sparty rings louder, while the goal of supremacy over the buckeyes runs deeper.

It made sense for our CFP hopes and also because a strong MSU in any sport is annoying for me.  It's been 16 years and the sight of Mateen Cleaves dancing like a school girl annoys the hell out of me.

I want us to put MSU back in its place as the clearly inferior program in football.  I want to beat Dantonio back to where he was in 2007.  I want to shut up Draymond, Plaxico, Delvin Roe and all the other Sparties on social media.

It may sound crazy, but every year, I want OSU to win all their games except against us.  I want us to go into that game undefeated.  I want The Game to be the top game on the entire B1G schedule and on the national stage the last weekend in November.

if we hold up our end of the bargain.  I like there being big stakes on the line when we play them.  It's great when both teams have so much to win/lose.

To be honest, during the RR and Hoke years, I didn't pull for OSU just because I knew we had no shot at beating them.  And recruiting Ohio kids was extremely difficult.  This is not the case anymore.

Also, I can live with a strong OSU.  A strong MSU is downright unbearable when living in this state.  History means nothing until we shut them up next year in EL.  Suddenly it will become "2 wins in 7 years" or some BS like that.

I couldn't help but smile when that fg went through the uprights despite hurting Michigan's chances at the time for a shot at the title game.  Listening to the crowd at the bar I was at yelling at Urban for being overrated and needing to learn how to coach just cracked me up.

I'm glad MSU won because I'm tired of seeing OSU win the Big Ten. They've won it 7 fucking times since we last won it in 2004. I don't want them ever catching us. And I think Iowa has a better chance of beating MSU than OSU.

With the caveat, of course, that I wish both of them could have lost...  I would much rather see MSU go to the playoffs than OSU.  It's not even close, really.  OSU is our main rival.  It's the only team out there that I cannot bring myself to root for no matter the circumstances.

Same type of question was posed to OSU fans regarding out game against MSU...they were decidedly in agreement that they wished UM had won that game now. All in all, OSU is the rival, MSU is just annoying and is lucky to be where they are this year (several one score wins against very mediocre teams, maybe even UM included), and probably should have lost 3 other games this season just in conference play. They will continue to regress to the mean next year, and hopefully OSU will too as they lose huge chucks of their starting rosters on both sides of the ball. All that to say, I am glad OSU lost and isn't in the B1G Championship game and should find themselves on the outside looking in on the playoff with the rest of the B1G. Screw OSU. Screw all their fans, and screw the whole state. I've lived in Dayton for 20 years now and UM has won maybe 4 games against OSU in that time. These fans are UNBEARABLE & need a good dose of humble pie at every opportunity.

Their schadenfreude at losing in Columbus, and not having a shot at the NC, and having Meyer's string of conference victories broken, is sweet enough.

Indeed it is.

I don't like MSU in the Playoff, but let's let Alabama (or Iowa!) take care of that little abberation.

In the meantime, let's wrap our heads around what Ohio State did to themselves:  They cost themselves a shot at the National Championship, in Columbus, against an inferior team, with their own team being at least as good as last year's National Championship team.

And this was all 100% their own doing.  And even their own usually-quiet players called them out on it.

If they got a do-over, they would beat MSU by 20.  And they know it.

Congratulations Buckeyes!  You are the best team in the country to watch the Playoff on TV.

Just like the rest of us.

Mmmmm.  Delicious.

I suppose if I were really hung up on having as uncomplicated a path into the BTCG as possible (not guaranteeing that we would get in, for it would involve beating OSU regardless, which we didn't), then the MSU victory in Columbus probably is one of those things that gnaws at me.

All things considered, however, I am not upset with how everything ultimately turned out even despite a disappointing game against Ohio State. Once OSU lost that game in Columbus, you had to more or less assume that we'd get no help from Penn State in any scenario.
