See…I’m almost certain that’s the model we’re going to end up at IF advertisers start to shy away from the product.

The biggest reason why PPV is the model for boxing/MMA/UFC is because a fight can end pretty dang quick and eliminate multiple advertising slots of mid round breaks.  Football will likely never have that issue, but if enough casual fans stop paying for access to the point it effects revenue, I can definitely see the conferences refusing to take a paycut from networks and just selling the product directly.

Not really a huge nfl guy,…

Not really a huge nfl guy, especially compared to UM football and the Red Wings.  I’ve been a casual a fan for a long time as a Chiefs fan (1995 when Montana was acquired), and a budding Lions fan (because of Aiden).  I won’t cheer against the Chargers, and I’ll probably cheer for the Chiefs less now. I hope for the best for Jim, so if that means a Super Bowl win, I hope he gets it.  As for whether or not he’ll have success in LA, who can say?  Maybe he gets poached by Dallas next year or ends up in Baltimore after John retires this season after getting a 2nd Super Bowl.

I’m not far off from where…

I’m not far off from where you are.  I do think that at some point, he’d get tired of going through the aggravation of interviewing and telling every recruit he may or may not be there next season etc only to not the get a job.  At some point, don’t you just tell potential suitors to only come for me to interview you.  He has an established record at the college and pro level, if you want him, make him an offer.

The obvious caveat is that nfl teams have the Rooney Rule, so you’d think his agent could tell any potentially interested parties “interview your 3-4 candidates and if you don’t think they’d be a better fit, you know where to find me”.  That is essentially what Bama did with Lanning and DeBoer, and it led to a quick and clean hire.

Maybe Jim still has to hedge with recruits at that point, but that’s much more palatable to be able to say “I’m not going unless I get a better opportunity dropped in my lap, and I’d expect you to do the same”.

TLDR:  I’d like him to stay and put the onus on the nfl to woo him rather than watch him chase them every offseason.  If he goes, thanks for everything.  If he stays, please act like you want to be here.

Yes take him if he’s…

on a completely different note and since this is just a snowflake thought that doesn’t warrant a thread….i want the Lions to play Houston in the Super Bowl.  Another CJ Stroud vs Aiden Hutchinson matchup would be good for everyone.

OSU really should have lost…

OSU really should have lost to ND last year, could have lost to Maryland and Penn St, and did lose to UM by getting bullied on the ground in the 4th quarter again.  The way UM finished against Bama and Washington in the CFP, I think if UM needed a TD against OSU to win the game in the 4th quarter, they would have gotten it.

UM is facing down the potential of a lot of turnover, but brings back the bulk of game breakers on both sides of the ball and on both lines.  Ohio St is bringing back guys who haven’t been able to finish against the best teams they’ve played (Oregon, UM, and UGA), so until they win a game like that, their culture/contender status is suspect.

No.  2006 sucked.  2016 and 2018 sucked.  Being so close only to fall short to tOSU the last weekend of the year is abysmal.

It’s not like Roman Wilson…

It’s not like Roman Wilson wasn’t given plenty of opportunities to shine in this offense.  In fact, on the espn app there’s a top 30 plays of the cfb season feature and guess which play was #1…Wilson’s TD catch on the helmet of the Nebraska defender.

Fielding that punt was going to give UM the ball at their own 40 at worst if he catches it, prob gets at least to 50 or well into Bama territory in the best case.  He just needed to look it in and then make the play.  He’s young and the team survived it eventually.

No tears of joy in my house…

No tears of joy in my house Monday night, those all came during the Penn St game after Blake iced the game, the Ohio State game after Blake scored and flashed the ✋☝️-✋ and then again when Rod Moore iced the game, and then finally the Rose Bowl after Josaiah Stewart iced the game by bullying  5 star RT into Milroe’s legs.

Monday night was Finland, but those three aforementioned games were periods 1, 2, and 3 against the Red Army team of the USSR.  Not because they were better, but because of the emotions and adversity that was forced upon this team in a concerted effort to derail the season and stymy the best opportunity for a UM National Championship in at least 17 years.

Having been a fan that started pulling for UM in 1995 but didn't start watching every week until the 2003 season, this wasn’t the first championship for me, but it is the first since I became fully invested.  It is something that I did not expect to see after the back to back embarrassments of 2018 and 2019, and was almost certain wouldn’t come until something took Ohio State out of the way for UM after 2020.  I cannot express how thankful I am to guys like Aiden Hutchinson, Hassan Haskins, Cade McNamara, Blake Corum, David Ojabo, & Mike Sainristil (and everyone else on that 2021 team and the subsequent 2022 and National Championship team 144 of 2023) for these last three seasons for believing in themselves enough for fans like me who didn’t.  The coaches all deserve a ton of credit as well for pushing the guys to be better every day and putting them in position to be successful.

And a big thank you to everyone here on mgoblog (writers and commentators alike) for giving fans like me who don’t live near campus a place to commiserate and celebrate together on this wild ride.  Truly, for at least another 7 months, nobody has it better than us.  Go Blue!

I hope my kids will remember…

I hope my kids will remember Monday night and me positively and not hate me for bringing them into this cult that is college football fandom, particularly the seemingly endless parade of nut-punches that has been the Michigan experience.

Sports, and fandom thereof has a mysterious power to bind family and strangers alike in corporate adulation and agony.  I am so happy that this moment can be shared with my kids, my dad, and all of you here, along with all the other fans that attended or watched the games this season.

Are you an alternate reality…

Are you an alternate reality me?

not a UM alum, but went to college from 99-03, and hit pretty much every other beat, including being ok with Harbaugh leaving if he wants to chase the Super Bowl championship.  The man did everything he set out to do here, so if his heart wants a Super Bowl Championship, no UM fan should begrudge him of an opportunity for him to chase it.

So…..if Jim doesn’t announce…

So…..if Jim doesn’t announce he’s signed his new contract, he’s gone isn’t he?

This may be a bit of a…

This may be a bit of a nonsequiter, but I cannot help but think about how similar Iowa is to Michigan in regard to how each program wants to build their roster and win games.

I know Brian Ferentz is rightly derided for his atrocious offense, but the parallels between how UM builds the roster with 1 or 2 bonafide stars and coaches up everyone else, while scheming up advantages in every facet of the game and how Iowa does the exact same thing (though they’ve only been successful on D and ST) is jarring.  If Iowa has a top 60 offense, they probably play UM as an undefeated team in Indianapolis with a shot at the CFP back door, even with a loss.

UM has proven you don’t need to have a top recruiting class for 5 straight years to build a roster that can win.  UM has proven that you don’t have to throw for 3,000 yards and 30 TDs to dominate opponents every week.  Jim and Kirk are very close to the same coaching philosophy, it’s just that Kirk seems to want to win in spite of offense rather than with it.

My best friend is a huge Iowa fan and likes to remind me that Iowa was once (back in the early 2000s) an offensive innovator, and won a share of the B1G title a few times on the back of top scoring offenses with players like Tim Dwight, Tavian Banks, and Brad Banks.  If Iowa can make a great hire for OC, that team could get real scary real fast.

Beating Ohio St and winning…

Beating Ohio St and winning the B1G championship are always the top goals for any season.  The special teams gaffes did nothing to make me believe UM was going to win the Rose Bowl game, particularly after the missed fg and before the second muff.  After so long a championship drought, I guess I just never believed it would happen again.  Very glad to have been proven wrong.

I mentioned it before, but…

I mentioned it before, but the stress levels for this year’s games had a very different trajectory than years past.

Obviously, UM didn’t face a real test until the PSU game.  When Blake iced that game, there was a huge release of frustration and pent up anxiety for me.  The Maryland game was tighter than I’m sure we all hoped, but winning that game only ratcheted up the intensity for the OSU game.  I personally couldn’t bear to watch the last two drives of that game because I knew how much the outcome of that game would effect the narrative of the 2021-2023 seasons and the off season that was coming up.  Winning that game released all of the pressure/frustration/anxiety for me.  The B1G Championship game was really just another coronation with the only intrigue being how Petitti and the team would handle the trophy presentation.  The Rose Bowl was exciting, and had some anxious moments, but I never felt like it was out of reach or deserving of the same level of stress as we’d seen in the regular season.  I did get excited with my teenage son on the OT stop, but it wasn’t as high a high as the OSU game.

The biggest moment for our house was Sainristil’s INT that everyone knew sealed the game (as I’m sure it was for most others).  But it was not a moment of dread/foreboding/anxiety/stress like the final drive on D in the Ohio St game.

it’s hard to reconcile, but it obviously speaks to how big that rivalry really is.  I don’t think a CFP Championship would ever be worth a loss in The Game after how the last two seasons have gone (OSU almost winning the cfp despite losing to UM and experiencing this championship season for UM).

I’ll take 2

I’ll take 2

My goodness, what a wild…

My goodness, what a wild ride this season was.

I didn’t start paying any real attention to cfb until 1995 when UM beat OSU as I had just been relocated to Dayton, OH as my Air Force dad got stationed at Wright Patt.  Being on the hs soccer team made me miss most Saturday tv watching with either practice or a game, but I caught some of the 1997 season and watched all the Sportcenter highlights of the Woodson ints and offensive TDs, and watched the OSU game and Rose Bowl.

That was enough to hook me as a fan, but I didn’t fully engage until 2003 and the Minnesota game on Friday night where Navarre brought the team back in the 4th quarter.  Having a best friend who was (and still is) a huge Iowa fan helped fan the fandom flame, and since I was out of school and had a M-F 8-5 job, Saturdays were now free to be devoted to college football.

Everyone here knows how it’s gone since then.  2006 ended in bitter, crushing fashion, and 2016 did as well, then the way the 2018 game went was enough to convince me the program ceiling would be 10-2, with a loss to someone they should have beaten and Ohio State.  2019 did nothing to dissuade me from that position, and 2020 made me question why I still bothered.

But man, what a ride since 2021.  I have kids (both boys) who are old enough to start watching and caring (the oldest in 8th grade has now attended 3 straight B1G Championship Games where UM and Harbaugh hoisted the trophy, the younger in 6th grade has been to 2 straight).  While I love that it’s something we can share and I hope has been as fun for them as it has been for me, I fear the cyclical nature of things will leave them where I was in 2018-2020.

I guess the only way to feel better about that is knowing that as UM fans, we’ll always have had these last 3 years and this Championship (in our hearts if nowhere else though I don’t think anything will be vacated/otherwise diminished).  What a team, what a ride.  Go Blue!
