As he came to mind pretty quickly, but perhaps due to the fact I just watched 2003 Michigan/OSU highlights.
However, I think Denard is my favorite. I was a student for a good amount of his career at Michigan and he was a bright spot in an otherwise dark time for Michigan football. We know his shortcomings, but man, did he compete and make some pretty electric plays. From what I've seen and heard, he's a class act, too. Oh, and the nickname of "Shoelace" is pretty excellent.

I'll NEVER forget being in the student section for the first play of his first start against Western. My God -- that touchdown! That certainly set the tone for his electric play. What a guy.
November 12th, 2015 at 4:52 PM ^
Don't think he started. Was his first touch, though.
November 12th, 2015 at 5:02 PM ^
The fumble for a touchdown was a perfect analogy for his feast-or-famine style of play. Every time he touched the ball, someone's band was about to start playing.
That guy was awesome.

Harbaugh was my first hero when I was a kid so it's hard to trump that but man I Ioved watching Denard.

He's going to be awesome in 2032.

Obligatory - But I love this video and this QB....
November 12th, 2015 at 11:03 PM ^
Henne might have been. Navarre and Brady certainly were not. I'm not sure recruits in the late 1980s came with start ratings, so Grbac may predate that.
The interesting thing about Grbac's recruitment is the throw in piece that came along with him. Desmond. Grbac was the target out of Cleveland. The coaches go to watch him play and think pretty highly of the WR on Elvis' team and offer him.

EG was an option QB in high school and I'm pretty sure his TB was DH.

Mainly because our years overlapped. Also he sat directly in front of me at graduation in the Big House. I'm sure he remembers me as well. :-) We bonded over Hillary Clinton's commencement address discussing socialized healthcare services.

...and not just because he's our current head coach. He is the first QB I remember when I was a kid playing football in the backyard, pretending to be Harbaugh, throwing a bomb to Kolesar. I remember when he guaranteed a win over Ohio State and then went out and delivered on that guarantee.

Especially the ones that lead us to victories over OSU, MSU, ND, or get us a national championship.

that Griese gets the slight nod for me over even Leach

as your comment certainly deserves more upvotes than just the 1 that I'm giving you.

In terms of personality, Denard. In terms of ability, probably Drew Henson.
November 12th, 2015 at 4:45 PM ^
to Brian Griese remains the ultimate tear-jerker moment for me in my nearly 40 year history of walking Michigan football.
November 12th, 2015 at 4:56 PM ^
How about Bob Griese at the end of The Game, when Keith Jackson invited him to take off his "neutral" hat and talk about what his son meant to him? IIRC, Bob Griese did not mention the loss of his wife (Brian's mother) when Brian was young during the broadcast.
But we all knew, and it was a wonderful moment. Pure unrehearsed pride, joy, and love.
November 12th, 2015 at 5:14 PM ^
I don't think there was a dry eye in that sequence after the end of that game - even Keith Jackson was getting choked up, as I recall, but it was an incredible moment for a father and son. I am pretty sure there wasn't a dry eye in the house where I was sitting at the time either.

In my own memory? Grbac. Takes me back to my first years of fandom (almost), an era when Michigan as anything less than a powerhouse was unthinkable to me. Close runner-up is Denard, who beats Grbac out personally, but just doesn't conjure up as happy a time.
From the hearsay of others? HARBAUGH, of course. I can remember my Dad talking about him constantly when he was the man at Michigan, but I was just shy of being old enough to understand and absorb it all at that time. My Dad was wanting Harbaugh to coach at Michigan, at the very least as an assistant, as soon as he retired from the League. I'm glad he finally got his wish.
November 12th, 2015 at 4:51 PM ^
Good call on Grbac. In addition to winning a shit ton of games, from a very few interactions he seemed like a very nice guy. I'm surprised that Henne hasn't gotten any love yet. Like Grbac, he won a ton of games for Michigank, and seemed like a good guy. But Grbac is a better choice.
Denard is, as you say, more of a sentimental favorite. Very likeable and electric to watch, but not my favorite QB. Ws and Ls, sadly, come into the equation.
From history? Tom Harmon, and it's not even close.
November 12th, 2015 at 5:30 PM ^
Oh, Henne will always be up there for me, especially for the final hurrahs in East Lansing and Orlando, Penn State '05, but there are just too many bad memories in there, too (not that I'm singling him out for the blame, he was just there)...0-4 vs OSU, a couple Rose Bowl losses, most of the rest of 2005, and of course...The Horror.

November 12th, 2015 at 4:38 PM ^
Absolutely no question about it. Most exciting player to watch in Michigan history... in my opinion. The personality and charisma made rooting for him all that much better.
November 12th, 2015 at 4:44 PM ^
and unsuccesful. I will never understand the love affair with him around these parts. I would take any Michigan starting quarterback from 1990-2006 over him.
November 12th, 2015 at 5:01 PM ^
All-American, Most Career Rushing yards by a QB, Only 1500 rushing/1500 passing player ever, Most 200/200 games ever, and won a BCS Bowl. Not to mention being the best face of the program we could ask for. He is every dads dream son. All while being a square peg shoved into a round hole riding through waves of coaching baffoonery. But yeah. Super unsuccessful...
November 12th, 2015 at 5:52 PM ^
Not to mention, only starting quarterback to beat OSU since Navarre and MSU since Henne.
Denard was a bright light in a dark time of Michigan football and is a great representation of the University and program in the NFL.
November 12th, 2015 at 6:32 PM ^
Favorite doesn't mean the best. For me, it will probably always be Denard, not because of his play on the field but because of the person he is.
Remember his speech before the B1G? How he overcame his fear of public speaking? His humility? His being just another student at bball games?
Then there was this from MSC's final commencement address:
I remember Denard Robinson. I rememeber him for his artistry here in the turf at Michigan Stadium, but more for his joy of being a student. A year ago at this time I ran into Denard and his family after commencement. He was showing everyone the campus, and he asked me to join in a family photo.

Have to go with Chad Henne on this one.

Benny Friedman, the greatest player of all time, except perhaps Jim Brown.
I concede I never saw him play.
I missed by a couple of years.
Favorite among those I have seen?
Denard.

Now he's doing other artistic stuff as a performer. Apparently he has many musical influences outside of rap. He got an segment on the Atlanta AM morning show, and also has some filmmaking shorts:
