Something needs to be done about the helmet stickers (pic)

Submitted by Maizen on

I'll admit that when coach Harbaugh announced the return of helmet stickers I was lukewarm about the idea because a) I grew up in an era where Michigan did not wear them and b) I prefer the clean and classic look of the winged helmet.

As the season has gone on they have grown on me a bit, however it's becoming clear (just take one look at Jabrill Peppers helmet) that the criteria for the stickers is either too lax or that the stickers themselves are too big. I mean this looks ridiculous and cluttered no?

Yes, I realize life is good when this is what we have to complain about, but can we get some smaller stickers next year so our beautiful helmets don't look so busy? I don't think that's too much to ask. Perhaps something like this (EDIT: for Firstbase's idea for helmet stickers)

I've spent a lifetime debating this and these are points people often overlook.

Yes, clearly going from the underside without reason is clinically insane. Or you just like to make life harder on yourself. But there are reasons to go under when necessary:

Cats, puppies (actually happened to me and changed my life on this matter), toddlers, spider monkeys, etc.

Also sometimes under actually works better on a new roll, and you can still achieve a clean one handed rip when the roll is new or the tube is badly mis-shapen.

Solid contribution.

Michigan has never put stickers down the middle of the wings before. Even Greg Dooley of MVictors (the biggest proponent of helmet stickers among Michigan fans) called into WTKA a few days ago to complain about this problem.

The stickers are too big, or the criteria is too lax. Just my respectful opinion. Obviously people are free to disagree with me, but I love our helmets, and in my opinion, these big stickers are distracting from the beautiful wings.

I like the quantity -- but, yes, they should be somewhat smaller.

I'm just going to assume that Harbaugh went to the people printing the stickers ahead of time for an interpretation of sizing rules -- and was then shocked when they failed to meet his standards.

Happily, since we now have a coach who seems to be able to make adjustments, I predict that next year's stickers will be small enough that this is no longer a problem.  Although in Peppers's case -- he may just have to wear his extra ones on his shoes.  And his shoulder pads, chin strap, socks, long sleeves...

In my avatar I had the chance to pat Mark Messner and Mike Hammerstein on the helmet as they waded through the crowd heading to the tunnel. I remember both helmets were absolutely full of stickers.

I cannot recall if there were any inside the wings, but I'd bet on Jim having a very similar set of criteria to Bo's system.

Having the best helmets in college football is a proud accomplishment so why hide it with decals. I like that the players get rewarded for doing good things but i don't think that the rewards should cover up greatness.

I use a sticker chart on the back of the bathroom door to reward by toddlers when they go potty. Perhaps the same thing can be done with the players' lockers.

I hate the stickers, but when I saw that photo shopped picture months ago (with the small Ms), I was OK with that (if that is what they decided to do). The small Ms look far cleaner and nicer than the current ones.

I love the helmet stickers and the Michigan helmet.

And I wouldn't change a thing.

The only thing Jim Harbaugh is guilty of is maybe being more generous in doling them out to players than Bo Schembechler.  Curt Gowdy said that Rick Leach had 48 helmet stickers apparently in 1977. I doubt that was correct, but I don't care. Rick Leach ran the fucking triple option at Michigan for four years, starting 48 games (ridiculous today) and deserved every damn one of them.

Your preferences on the entire helmet award question depend greatly on when you started watching the Michigan football movie.  If you started in the late 1990s, then I understand your view. If you started watching in 1971, then I'd also understand.

But this about today. Today Harbaugh is bringing back something that was old and cool with something new.

And I love that he did it.

I don't disagree that a naked Michigan helmet still kicks ass.

But I like Jim Harbaugh and I think the players love these helmet stickers, so let them earn helmet stickers.

So there's a few things going on here.  If the stickers are the same size as the old ones from way back, there's less real estate along the ears to put them in because the lines of the helmet are farther apart now than they used to be.  The stickers never used to be jammed inbetween the lines.  Maybe the sticker requirement is too lax with dudes getting 6-8 stickers a game.  After the Utah game, I was like, well hell, those helmets are going to fill up fast.  They should consider adding a super sticker of a different color/type that is basically a higher denomination than the plain sticker (say 1 super sticker = 5 or 10 regular stickers) to clean things up a bit.

I just don't care enough about stickers. Not something I'll get my shorts in a wad over. Actually, I'm thrilled that this year, the team has something to really get stickers for. Over the last 7 years, for the most part, there wasn't much to celebrate.
