Something needs to be done about the helmet stickers (pic)

Submitted by Maizen on

I'll admit that when coach Harbaugh announced the return of helmet stickers I was lukewarm about the idea because a) I grew up in an era where Michigan did not wear them and b) I prefer the clean and classic look of the winged helmet.

As the season has gone on they have grown on me a bit, however it's becoming clear (just take one look at Jabrill Peppers helmet) that the criteria for the stickers is either too lax or that the stickers themselves are too big. I mean this looks ridiculous and cluttered no?

Yes, I realize life is good when this is what we have to complain about, but can we get some smaller stickers next year so our beautiful helmets don't look so busy? I don't think that's too much to ask. Perhaps something like this (EDIT: for Firstbase's idea for helmet stickers)

Look, not nitpicking here, I'm glad we're back to playing meaningful football in November, and think the helmet stickers are great.  But the helmets are running out of room!  Maybe the stickers should just be a bit smaller?  Don't remember them being so big back in the 70's or whenever they were on helmets before.

A nice refreshing change of complaints from last year when it was "something must be done about putting all 11 players on the field for special teams!"

Just make them smaller and problem solved.

Big sticker = 10 small stickers

o = 1
O = 10
Ooooooo = 16
OOOooo = 33
OOOOOooooooo = 57 (Peppers is around here right now and would have only half of 1 side full)

Who cares about stickers I only care about wins. If the players deserve the stickers then so be it victory is the most beautiful thing even more beautiful then our winged helmets.

I'm just excited that this is the sort of problem being discussed on the board, rather than the sort of topics that have been common over the last few years.

complaining about helmet stickers and saying the rules to hand out are too lax...ok times have changed.

I on the other hand did grow up during the helmet sticker days and watching Des rip up defenses with those beautiful stickers....I like them, will always like them

Thanks for the picture!  It actually helps make the OP's point.

By my estimation, Desmond has approximately 30 stickers on his helmet in this photo. -- That's Desmond Howard in his Heisman Trophy year.  He did a lot of really good stuff that year.  This pose is from OSU, last game of the regular season.  30 stickers.

In the picture the OP posted, Jabrill likely has over 60 already - 3 games before OSU.

Stickers are great.  Love 'em.  God bless Jim Harbaugh.  They're just overdoing it.

Again, I don't mind the stickers, but I don't want to see them going down the middle of the helmet. It takes away from the wings. Don't know how many different ways I can say it. Hence why I posted a picture of Jabrill's helmet. Bo never had a player with stickers down the middle. That is sacreligous.

I think the helmet stickers are cool. More importantly, Harbaugh likes them.  Harbaugh likes everything that happened when he was on campus in the mid 80s because, to him, that is quintessential MICHIGAN.

Why do you want to kill Harbaugh's dream/vision of Michigan football?  Why not do everything in our power to retain JH as our coach?

If Harbaugh thinks big hair and car phones are quintessential Michigan, by God start buying hair-spray and cigarette-lighter adaptors.

If Harbaugh likes it - get on board.  Especially if it's something as trivial as your fashionz-take.

I never said I'm not OK with helmet stickers. I said I would like to see them either smaller in size or given out less frequently so our beautiful helmet doesn't look so cluttered and busy. I don't know why people continue to comment in ways that suggest I'm disparaging the idea of helmet stickers. I'm not.

Either make them smaller or make it harder to earn. I am sure that whatever they do they must keep the players in mind. No way do I think that it should be harder to earn I think the amount is fine. The reason you can't make it easier is you diminish the pride in some of  the ones you already have. If that happens they (new stickers) could have the opposite effect of what they were intended. So I am with the making them smaller crowd and would never change the reason for earning them.

It wasn't long ago that we were choking this board with posts full of reasons for yet another loss.  Today, we talk about the size of our helmet stickers.  This is music to my ears.

Peppers is the worst (term used very loosely) example of trying to figure out the proper sticker size for the available real estate conundrum.  If you take the typical Michigan starter, the stickers will probably fill the helmet for a full season.  Peppers' helmet is downright.......beautiful!!!

Just win.  Win, baby, WIN.

A parting thought: New, smaller stickers may already be on order for next year -- for Peppers.  Everyone else will use up the current ones.

I thought after the outside area was full they were just using a locker room chart for overflow? I have no issues with the concept, just the execution. FWIW, the image on the bottom seems perfect, schematically speaking.

But if we are to keep them going forward, we should definitely shrink them a bit. I also like the concept of no one man is above the team or anyone else on the team. Everyone having the same helmet gives it more of a "team" look to me. Yeah I know, it's kinda dumb but it just feels that way to me.
