01/07/2019 - 9:15pm It starts with the offensive…

It starts with the offensive and defensive lines. Michigan has recruited good depth on the defensive line but the offensive line remains a work in progress. Watch the deep shots in the National Title tonight. On the 62 yard shot down the seam by Lawrence to Higgins the pass pro was perfect and Lawrence kept his eyes down field even with Bama bringing pressure. That’s the difference. Michigan QBs are not as confident and often leave the pocket because of pressure. It takes a strong offensive line to build that trust. Michigan has all the weapons but must continue to build the offensive line.

01/07/2019 - 4:53pm You know what, Harbaugh…

You know what, Harbaugh wants players and coaches who want to “win for Michigan” and Hoke checks the box as far as coaches are concerned. He is also a proven DL coach. Why not give him a call? The man can recruit.

01/07/2019 - 3:18pm If Harbaugh were to go back…

If Harbaugh were to go back to the NFL I would expect us to go as hard in the paint as possible to get Urban to come to Michigan.

01/04/2019 - 8:23pm You know Jim is calculated…

You know Jim is calculated and that next year is about as good a year as any to restart the whole rivalry against a new coach. Harbaugh knows this is it. And for us Michigan fans it’s an eerie feeling similar to Rodriguez, or Hoke in their final year. This does have a different feeling. I don’t see Harbaugh as a weak coach on his way out. I believe Harbaugh will make the necessary changes going into 2019. Look at post 2017. This team is close but not quite there and needs one more piece and that’s a top flight OC. There are guys out there. I believe Matt Canada is still out there. He’d Fisch and Wheatley are options on the table if he could mend those fences. Major Applewhite is out there. If you wanted to toy with the Buckeyes a bit go after Kevin Wilson and stab him away. There are options.

Notre Dame used this same strategy on third down and obvious pass situations.

09/07/2018 - 5:41pm On third down and obvious…

On third down and obvious pass situations, Notre Dame put 4 DE in to the game similar to what Ohio State does to apply maximum speed and pressure. I am hoping Don Brown took some notes on this approach.

06/19/2018 - 8:43am Wisconsin is a major…

Wisconsin is a major wildcard. Their defense was good last year, and their offense was efficient. Last year was a prototypical Wisconsin football team.

Wisconsin's defense ranked number 6 in the nation against FBS opponents in total defense. They are returning 36% of their starting defense. This is a big deal because they are not as talented as say Ohio State and Michigan depth as far as depth and need time for the younger guys to develop.

They are returning 90% of their offense and their Starting QB. If Hornibrook can eliminate the bad turnovers they have a chance, I just don't see them winning more than nine, or ten games.

04/30/2018 - 9:53pm Why are so

Down on parents who drive their kids to do something other than sit on their lazy ass all day? Was your daddy mean to you? Is that why you are projecting your lame negativity regarding parenting, and coaching? What actually drives a person like yourself who seems to have a who’s is me attitude? How many trophies have you earned for participating and not actually “participating”.

04/30/2018 - 9:46pm Notice my use of the word

“Generally”. I knew those types, but many stray away as they are focused on the task at hand as well. There are no perfect crowds.

04/30/2018 - 9:40pm Not a wise idea.

I have coached youth and middle schools football and the one issue in the area that I coached were the kids we not able to play tackle football until 5th grade. These kids lacked proper form, and often got hurt because they hesitated prior to taking hits. I had a kid transfer from a neighbor Ming town that allowed tackle from 1st grade up and he played every year. He tackled with his head, up, eyes up and drove through on his tackles. He could also take hits and did not wince or hesitate before impact like many of the other kids. Not trying to tell you what to do, but my advice is to start them early in tackle, or don’t start them at all. Football may seem like a game that you can just jump right in at any point and learn it quick and excel. Yes, there are many who have jumped in late and prospered, but you build instincts at a young age that you carry throughout your entire time playing football.

04/30/2018 - 9:16pm We need to quit protecting our

Children so much and allow them, or encourage them to takes some risk. I don’t mean the risk that lead to drug abuse and teen pregnancy, but actually being a part of a team. This is what’s wrong with the current generation. So many people believe they are deserving without earning and there are too many parents who allowed this to be an option for their kids. Push these damn kids to get and be involved. You live one life and it does not payoff I. The long run to sit on the sideline your entire life.

04/30/2018 - 9:11pm Who’s stops high schoolers

Or stopped them in the past from doing what they are not allowed to do? Also my argument as a parent is that You should play sports, be involved in activities that create a team environment and teaches you how to win and lose. Kids who are hanging out smoking, drinking whatever are not generally the same crowd that are heavily involved in athletic endeavors.

04/30/2018 - 9:08pm Wow,

Why would you post negatively about your own kid on a forum that he may come across one day? Encourage your child to be successful. You are only as great, or not so great as the environment you are surrounded by. I encourage my daughter to drive harder every day and let her know that she can always do more and improve. I know it’s not my business, but please take my advice as a positive. Show encouragement to your son and you never know how far he may go in sports, or other areas of life because of the confidence you bestow upon his life.

04/30/2018 - 9:02pm So can video games by the way,

Every is fake news.

04/30/2018 - 9:00pm Quit sensationalizing

These radical outlooks. It’s amazing that people who read a football blog constantly berate the game that drives the ship they post on daily. Here is a story on soccer,… soccer is linked to CTE but I guess we can ignore soccer because unlike football it’s not a game of pure brute masculinity.

I know people who have smoked three packs of cigarettes per day their entire lives and they know the risks. My best friend growing up joined the military at 18, then 9-11 happened. He knew the risk. He has now served 9 tours of duty and has witnessed the risk first hand. Football like smoking or playing soccer, or joining the military come with a price. One thing is for sure, we all will live and we all will die for one reason or another, and we all deserve the freedom of choice in how we want to spend our very short lives. If I want to play football as a youth, which I did and all the way to pros, which I only made it as far as a semi pro league, I deserve the right to do so. I know one thing, my son, or sons will play football. My seven year old daughter plays basketball religiously as if it’s in her blood to do so. Go Blue.

04/20/2018 - 5:21am It’s definitely magic

Maniac juice.

04/10/2018 - 9:25pm G** D*** it

I told you to stop being negative about the “situational scrimmage”. Remember it is just a practice.

04/01/2018 - 6:52pm No politics

God damn it.

03/21/2018 - 1:59am It’s a combination of

Both ore and post snap. QB makes the rad based on specific defenders such as the linebacker and his initial read goes during the handoff action similar to zone reading the end. If the the defender reads run and commits towards the run QB pulls the ball and throws to on of the receivers in the intended route combination generally a void left open by the defender who committed to the run.

03/18/2018 - 1:46pm I would have never married if

my wife was not passionate, or understanding of my passion for sports. I don’t care about the whole “have perspective” yada yada bullshit. I work damn hard for my family and when it comes down to it they understand that sports is a distraction from reality that keeps me sane for a few hours, or ten hours straight.

03/09/2018 - 5:41pm Tell him to drop

Off our trophy he stole in 2013. Once he drops it off I don’t care where he coaches, or if he ever coaches again.

02/26/2018 - 5:26pm Interesting

I’m happy he defended our country and could honestly give a shit about any of the other items. We need more people willing to fight for something. Look at the sheriff who did not go into parkland and allowed the shooter free reign. Your grandpa caught for my freedom and I respect that.

01/05/2018 - 7:31pm So essentially

If they had a disagreement, maybe Harbaugh reaches out and admits he was wrong and offers him the OC position as well as associate head coach and full control of the offense.

01/05/2018 - 1:50pm Our staff

Will have 8 months to prepare for Notre Dame. I would hope with everyone coming back that Harbaugh will have a pretty solid game plan going into this game.

11/25/2017 - 5:29pm Once again Barrett was

Not attacked this is fake news and Urban wants to use this as an excuse to say “if Barrett were not hurt pregame we would have rolled Michigan”. Just like he lobbied for the playoff in 2006 at Florida he is trying to create an excuse for this closer than expected game. I hate Urban and wish nothing but the worst for him for the rest of time.

11/25/2017 - 5:25pm Not prosecutable when the

“Victim” JT Barrett says it was an accident. The only prosecutable offense I can see is Jim Delaney colluding with refs to steal as much playoff money as he can. But regardless Michigan loses today we move on and work harder for next year.

11/19/2017 - 5:55pm Hot take!

After rewatching JT Barrett against Iowa and Oklahoma i can see how Michigan keeps the game close. It’s the obvious issues on offense and the possibility we have O’Korn starting. Now if O’Korn starts I’m comfortable that he knows the entire playbook. He made a few nice throws last week and one was a bad drop. If Peters plays he is also a liability as he stares down his receivers on straight drop back plays. Maybe Speight is ready in secret and they have been prepping him over the last few weeks.

One way or the other if Michigan cannot throw on first down successfully they will struggle running the ball and keeping Ohio State honest. Last years game plan specifically protected Speight with three step drops and quick throws and Michigan was in rhythm. Everything you do in a game like this must be off schedule and breaking tendency.

I think Michigan has a snowflakes chance in hell to win this game but it will take bad JT Barrett and a complacent defensive game plan for Michigan to keep the game close.

01/27/2017 - 8:12am There is a difference between

There is a difference between Urbana style and Rich rods style, though both concepts are the same. The main difference is personnel. Urban utilizes spread to run and lots of power concepts. At Florida and Ohio State you have pro athletes who can execute the spread with west coast concepts. Rich Rod built his offense to in Div 3 and at West Virginia to help bridge talent gaps and to create matchups one on one with lots of bubbles and zone read that often works just like a triple option with the bubble working as the third option. At West Virginia Pat White was the main running threat reading the end. He had the option to give to Slaton or pop a quick pass to a bubble. You don't see urban utilizing this because he has the athletes that can play head up with anyone. Urban uses Zone Read with the TB as the main option running traps, counters and straight up power. The concepts are the same but the personnel are what really change the way both coaches scheme and game plan.

Good for Shane. He stuck it out. What I will remember most is that Shane worked and competed while learning from Harbaugh how to play the position. I can bet any amount of money he will do very well at a MAC school after staying here and competing under this staff. This was likely the plan all along.

12/04/2016 - 9:18am My guess has two possible

My guess has two possible thought processes. Bama, Clemson, Washington, Ohio State. Bama vs Ohio state on New Year's Eve will up the viewership for that day and because Clemson and Washington won their conference titles, they will be rewarded with a 2-3 seed matchup and not the dreaded 1-4.

The other thought process is that Penn State won last night and they could Jump Ohio State and be in that 4 spot with Clemson and Washington at 2 and 3.

My hope is that the committee can use the Penn St game to declare that Michigans giant win over them (49-10) and the 4 pts combined margin in Michigans two losses on the road this year out weigh Washingtons weak scheduling. This could be enough to get Michigan into the 4 spot.

My thoughts are that the committee needs to pick the 4 best and shock the world by having Bama, Clemson, Ohio St, Michigan or Penn State.

11/29/2016 - 1:31pm What makes people think

What makes people think Michigan does not get in? 10.4 rating for The Game played at noon? I am telling you there will be one maybe two conference champs this year and two non champs Ohio State and Michigan. There will be no PAC 12 with washingtons weak ass schedule (67th) and if they lose that just helps Michigan. Penn State, Wisconsin does not matter either. The best two teams based on strength of schedule and quality wins including head to head are Michigan out of the Big Ten. The committee has a chance to stir the pot and prove that schedule strength matters and that teams better beef up, and conferences better improve internally. This year will be controversial, but no way will they pass on the big dollars and ratings that an Ohio State, Michigan rematch has to offer and nows their best chance.

11/27/2016 - 5:03pm Quit beating the corpse of

Quit beating the corpse of the dead horse. There are so many reasons why Michigan uses certain personnel throughout a game. All teams do this. One reason the backs are alternated in and out is due to pass protection, which is why Smith takes the most snaps. You cannot play backs on certain downs showing your hand, so mixing up who is in on certain run vs pass downs is necessary. Wheatley mentioned last week that each back has their own special quality and that the idea is to develop or find the guy who possesses all of the qualities and that could shoulder the entire load.

Play calling was excellent yesterday. The goal was to get the ball out quick and prevent Speight from getting hit. The play worked and the one call that would have changed the game was the screen to Smith that was called back after the face mask penalty.

Speight pick six was a pass he should not have thrown. But when you have an injury and are likely only playing because of cortisone shot injection, you want to get rid of the ball and cannot take sacks.

The truth of this entire game is that the defense played great as did the special teams and when it came down to it the offense did just enough but the refs were just a little better Saturday. Harbaugh is 0-1 against urban and now 0-1 against Ohio based refs.

11/27/2016 - 3:29pm What criteria does the

What criteria does the selection committee use to rank the teams?
The committee selects the teams using a process that distinguishes among otherwise comparable teams by considering conference championships won, strength of schedule, head-to-head competition, comparative outcomes of common opponents (without incenting margin of victory) and other relevant factors that may have affected a team’s performance during the season or likely will affect its postseason performance.

Selection committee members have flexibility to examine whatever data they believe is relevant to inform their decisions. They also review a significant amount of game video. Among the many factors the committee members consider are strength of schedule, head-to-head results, comparison of results against common opponents and conference championships won. The playoff group has retained SportSource Analytics to provide the data platform for the committee’s use. This platform allows the committee members to compare and contrast teams on every level possible. Each member evaluates the data at hand, and then the individuals will vote to produce a group decision.

I think the committee will look at the 10 television rating for a noon game yesterday and see the dollar signs and create their own big title game by keeping OSU 2 and Michigan 3. The committee will leave the pac12, and the ACc fighting for the 4 spot. Whoever wins convincingly is in, or if they all lose we see more chaos. I think this is the year the committee proves its point that the 4 best teams not just conference champs with two losses will play for it all. The committee and everyone knows PSU is not beating Bama, neither is Wisconsin, or Washington. This comes down to Clemson winning the ACC.
