Brandon proposed that the Game not be held every year

Submitted by dnak438 on

More revelations from Endzone via Land-Grant Holy Land:

Dave Brandon proposed that the Ohio State/Michigan game be occasionally moved to October, or in some cases, not played at all. He also proposed that Ohio State and Michigan be in different Big Ten divisions.

Yikes. Read the whole thing here:

people won't want to be near me while I'm reading BLL.  My language will be poor at best.  I hope the book is bound with steel.  It sounds like I may be throwing it occassionally, because every page will bring new revelations of what a complete idiot Dave Brandon is.

And that's pretty much what I meant too.

But I'll expand my thought a bit further, especially after one of the threads about Bacon's book previously talk about how little effort he put in to get Harbuagh in 2011.

You don't need to market the fans/alumni on Michigan. It markets itself.

You DO, however, need to market Michigan to the next head coach, and I don't care if it's Bo Schembechler, Jim Harbaugh, or Tom Brady. The idea that a guy is just going to bend over backwards to coach at Michigan is just the height of arrogance. Even a guy as devoted to Michigan like Harbaugh needed that little bit of convincing (or "love" as he put it).

The fact that Brandon was a player under Bo... oof. This is like if Tom Riddle had played for the Griffyndor Quidditch team and then you found out he eventually became Lord Voldemort.

Setting aside the many good reasons we want it played every year, this is a dumb idea for even the most jaded branding/marketing wanker.

One of the main reasons that Ohio State and Michigan stay relevant when their performance is lacking is The Game.  Even if Michigan blows, they will still register on the national stage toward the end of the season precisely because The Game is played every single year, without fail.  The same will be true when OSU has a down year or period.  You start skipping a few years here or there and people will care less (ala UM vs. ND).

Even a branding schmo should be able to see that it would hurt the brand.

I don't care if Brandon is secretly a triple black belt...

If I say that piece of shit in the streets...I'd run up and punch him square in the fucking face. Beat my ass afterwards if you can, but this is fucking ridiculous.

I would get one shot so square, we'd revert back to that late hit call on Crable in 2006, win that game and change the next 9 years forever.

by reading more and more of these excerpts, I've gone from thinking brandon is an asshole.. to thinking he is dumb... to now thinking he actually had an agenda to destroy michigan

The worst of all was that after this idea died and the Game was reaffirmed as an annual end-of-season matchup, Brandon had the nerve to act like that was his true intention all along.  I don't remember the exact quote but Brandon basically said that he deceived our fanbase to get us riled up so that we'd support what he "really wanted," to play them at the end of the year.

Thank god he's gone! I wouldn't mind having them on the other side of the conference. How cool would it be to see a Michigan vs Ohio state in the big ten championship game at a neutral field. But you must never move the game from the schedule!

Found this bit to be comical coming from an OSU point of view....it is as if Tattoogate never happened...

The mistakes of the Brandon era were more than just forgoing tradition and fans in the name of increasing revenue, it had to do with removing checks within an athletic department, losing the values of a department, and succumbing to ego.

So far, it seems that Ohio State has managed to avoid the worst of those excesses, but with a few poor hires, some bad luck, and inopportune administrative turnover, the university certainly isn't immune from a similar fate, if they lose their way.

Yes.  Apparantly, having a coach forced to resign in disgrace after covering for his players' drug use (that tattoo parlor was a drug den and tattoogate was a euphamism for cocainegate) and issued a "show cause" letter that essentially banned him from the sport for several years... this wasn't the "worst of the excesses," an over-eager pursuit of "brand value" was.

Right.  Tell that one to the band direct... oh, he was fired in disgrace, too?  Well, their president just has to... oh.  Nevermind.

For my out of line posts. I got a little wound up thinking about the previous OSU games, the last 7-8 yrs  etc etc ...

I propose we invoke the the ancient tradition of damnatio memoriae, the Roman custom of removing the biggest douchebags from history. If the site could translate all "Dave Brandon"s (past and future) to Scrotum Face, that would be ideal.

Its weird how only until I realized what a DB (ytdb) he is that he sort of has a scrotum face.

WTF wanting not to play The Game every year that is hell freezing over and pigs flying. No matter what the record has been VS OSU the past decade The Game should always be played it's the Best Rivalry in all of college football. I wouldn't be surprise that Dave has something to with why ND chickened out and isn't playing Michigan anytime soon along with ND as well. I wouldn't be surprise if Brandon wouldn't have gotten Nike back if he could have gotten to apparel business I think Brandon would have renewed with Adidas or maybe sign with Under Armour no way he signs with the swoosh just my opinion.
