OT: What's Your Guiltiest Song?

Submitted by Steve Breaston… on

I feel like it's going to be a slow week for the board so thought a lighthearted Monday question was apropos: What is your Guiltiest Song? The one you would sing in your car by yourself but change the channel if anyone else was with you. The song that you would like and claim that it "came with the iPhone." For fun, try to name one Oldie and one newer song.

For me, it's gotta be:

Oldie: "Straight Up" by Paula Abdul

Newbie: "Roar" by Katy Perry

DISCUSS (but silently judge me)

Just given the music I usually listen to, anything by Katy Perry. Firework, Roar and Teenage Dream especially.

I'd pay good money for Lana Del Rey to sing me to sleep every night.

And I think most of Taylor Swift's singles are catchy as all fuck. WE-EEEE ARE NEVER EVER EVERRRRR GETTTING BACK TOGETHER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't have guilty pleasures.  You can enjoy steak and lobster and still eat a hot dog now and then without feeling bad.

That said, if I was to pick the stuff most likely to get me made fun of, it's the early nineties techno and dance music.

Guilty as charged:

Backstreet Boys: Quit Playing Games With My Heart, Everybody, As Long As You Love Me, I Want It That Way, Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely, and Shape of My Heart.

N'Sync: Bye Bye Bye, and It's Gonna Be Me.

Avril Lavigne has already been mentioned.

Shania Twain: Man! I Feel Like a Women, You're Still the One, and From This Moment On.

Any song from Evita, The Sound of Music, and Mary Poppins.

"Let it Go" from Frozen

All songs I only listen to with headphones and incognito mode (for those that I don't own...).

(Edit #1: Forgot about Nickelback. Their "Best Of" CD is in my library. How You Remind Me is a classic).

(Edit #2: Posted this while listening to Simon and Garfunkel).

"Burn" by Ellie Goulding (too much Just Dance 2015 with my 7 year old, although there some songs on the "banned" list, like "Birthday" and "Last Summer" or something like that. When a song references a "birthday suit" and your 7 yo asks, "Isn't that naked? why are they tlaking about being naked?" it goes on the banned list).

"The Sign" by Ace of Base

This song was mentioned upthread, but it must be said that this particular scene from Harold and Kumar is my unfailing go-to thing to watch whenever I need a pick-me-up

As far as other guility pleasure fare goes, my list is a mile long and a parsec wide.  I have damn near zero shame about liking Lady Gaga's entire catalogue, and Billy Joel reigns o'er my heart as the king of guilty pleasures just as he reigns over yours.  Unless you hate him which I concede is a fully justified sentiment

My girlfiend when that song came out looked exactly like Chynna Phillps.  Same blonde hair on the beach in that video too.  She was a grad student when I was a sophomore.  One day towards the spring she got a job offer and by the end of the week she moved down south.  This was 20 years ago and I still think about her to this day.  Double that when I hear this song.

Oldie (for me at least) - Madonna - Music & Don't Tell Me.

Newer - Fergie - Big Girls Don't Cry. In all fairness, couldn't stop staring at her in the video.

Gaga - Bad Romance
