Bacon's Latest: New Coach Won't Be a Surprise Name
John U. Bacon on WTKA this morning:
- The new coach won't be another RichRod (an outsider).
- The new coach won't be another Hoke (a mid-level relative unknown who does have Michigan ties).
- The new coach WILL be one of the 4-5 names that won't go away: Jim Harbaugh, Les Miles, etc.
He claims no inside knowledge - these are just gut feelings. Nothing new really, but when JUB speaks, it's always worth a thread.

looks painful on the ol' man parts

Side note, and serious question, is that Abbey Road of Beatles fame? It really looks similar, but the type of cars is making me think no (i.e. not European-looking cars).
November 22nd, 2014 at 2:38 AM ^
yes, that is clearly London... note the black Hackney cab.
November 21st, 2014 at 8:27 PM ^
the second best thing about this is that is abbey road, unless i am mistaken. i used to watch this webcam. its pretty funny because the intersection is a high trafficked area and the cars like to gun it. I read that the zig-zag lines mean pedestrians have the right of way, which is unusual in London. So what you have is a high traffic street where the pedestrians have the right of way, and people are continuously stopping traffic to do the beatles cover. if you watch it for a little bit not only will you see lots of people do the beatles cover, you are very likely to see someone almost get hit by an impatient car. its a pretty funny distraction.
but if i saw the snail cross live i would have died of laughter.

So if I'm reading this right, he has no factual basis for knowing the results of a coaching search that isn't underway yet because we still have a coach (for another week or two)?
Oi. Thank god basketball season is underway.

I'm not sure I understand why some are so against this. The man knows how to form a coaching tree, so any coaching search 3-8 years hence will be 100% smoother than the last two.
November 21st, 2014 at 11:20 AM ^
It's likely he would make that one of his top priorities. He'd have to know that he won't be coaching forever. Ten years would even be at the top end of his longevity. But if he expects to hire and train his successor, that's not a bad thing.

Jimbo Fisher and Bo Pelini are former Miles assistants.
November 21st, 2014 at 12:38 PM ^
Also Mike Gundy @ OSU (ntOSU... and ntOSU in the Pacific NW either)
November 21st, 2014 at 3:37 PM ^
Ahem. That's Boseph Pelini to you.
November 21st, 2014 at 4:15 PM ^
I forgot about Pelini. While he's not the sexiest name he has won and we would take their record over the past 5 years. Thanks.

I am fine with Les but I hope he does not bring Cam along (which I assume he will)

I'm sure he'll make an announcement soon as the season's over and derail that person from coming to UM.
November 21st, 2014 at 11:13 AM ^
how long does it take them to do that?
November 21st, 2014 at 11:14 AM ^
wait a sec... so which are the "4-5 names" that won't go away ??? Jim and Les are the only two that fit lately... there has been little mention of John.... so who exactly would be the other three ?????

Starting to think it's Miles. The Harbaugh stars require too much alignment but then again, spookier things happened - https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=8634018

I thought the link was going to be some sort of opinion post about why a Harbaugh will be coaching here next year and eagerly clicked. You got me...but that was a fascinating read, regardless.
November 21st, 2014 at 3:00 PM ^
I have been thinking the same thing. It will be Miles for good or bad I think.

.....and here are those of us who missed the podcast waiting for its appearance on the site (can't believe there are still shots from E. F. Hutton commercials online):

Hackett and Schiss know better than to reach for a "maybe" coach. Harbaugh, Miles, or ummmm.....
November 21st, 2014 at 11:27 AM ^
Here's my gut feeling: Recently Ross said he wasn't going to go after Harbaugh for the Dolphins, as had been speculated. My gut tells me this statement was made to signal UM that he wouldn't compete with the University to get him.
It's similar to the statement that he wouldn't stand in the way of Michigan letting Brandon go.
That doesn't mean I think that Harbaugh has been offered the job at this point, or that he will come.
And yes, this is the very kind of silly speculation that I poked fun of in another thread, because I'm still that pathetic Michigan fan that needs a dose of Harbaugh.
November 21st, 2014 at 11:31 AM ^
He wouldn't need to signal that to UM. He could literally just call Schlissel and tell him.
Much more likely in my mind is that he's trying to communicate to his Miami coaches, team, and fans that he's committed to his current group and their current run at the playoffs. In other words, he won't be the type of owner who ruins a potentially good thing by distracting everyone with Harbaugh talk over the next couple of months.
November 21st, 2014 at 11:43 AM ^
You may very well be right, but I do read it differently, as I did with the prior statement.
November 21st, 2014 at 6:21 PM ^
I think both of you are right. Ross could've been doing both of those things by making that statement.
November 22nd, 2014 at 2:29 AM ^
yeah, Ross might have given the university $300 million but he spent $1 billion for the Dolphins.
November 21st, 2014 at 11:40 AM ^
Listen, there is a reason Stephen Ross is where he is. And, he doesn't need to to do anything publicly to signal anything to the University of Michigan.
Last time around, he interviewed Harbaugh when a whole lot was going down regarding our search, and you can postulate what you want about why that happened. You can rest assured that there was a reason for it to become public news.
This time around, he, publicly, says that the Dolphins aren't interested in JH. This isn't for Hackett's consumption, or Schlissel's, or Harbaugh's. It's for a public audience.
Is the information intended to let let other NFL owners, other NFL coaches, or other college coaches who may let UM know that ift, they better let somebody know -- maybe, I don't know. But it's not for UM decision makers.

I agree with your analysis.

I truly believe the only guy is Jim Harbaugh. Not because he's a Michigan Man but because he has the right personality that this roster truly needs right now. The right coach to fire back at the Urbz and Dantonio.
Make the right choice this time or we're doomed for another 10 years

Ok then, why would you say that? He apparently does not have a clue whether Hackett is going for Harbaugh or Loeffler but makes a claim anyway
