Bacon's Latest: New Coach Won't Be a Surprise Name

Submitted by BursleyHall82 on

John U. Bacon on WTKA this morning:

- The new coach won't be another RichRod (an outsider).

- The new coach won't be another Hoke (a mid-level relative unknown who does have Michigan ties).

- The new coach WILL be one of the 4-5 names that won't go away: Jim Harbaugh, Les Miles, etc.

He claims no inside knowledge - these are just gut feelings. Nothing new really, but when JUB speaks, it's always worth a thread.

What really gets me about this argument (and Reader 71, you're not the only one who has put it forth on this board) is the absolute black and whiteness of it. Either you win or you have integrity. It's like once the thread starts going in this direction, it picks up steam of its own and gets into this weird area. Hoke's not the answer. A dirty coach who wins isn't the answer. There is a Plan C, D, and E. There are other options besides Hoke and a dirty coach.

I'm not sure that's what Reader71 was saying at all (but he can defend himself).  The particular coach at issue was Les Miles.  What I agree with Reader about regarding Les is that he seems to fit your definition of a 'dirty coach who wins.'  What I think Reader is looking for is specifically the coach in the gray area between your definition of black and white, specifially Plan C, D, and E, of which Les is not one.

Oh well, like I said, Reader can defend himself.  My .02.  That's all.

Why even engage Reader 71 on this point?  I don't accept the argument that Miles is dirty and going to run the program into the ground.  If I accept his argument than we have ruled out every SEC coach and any coach ever associated with the SEC because they allow oversigning.

There have been people at Michigan that have a grudge against Miles and continue to do anything in their power to undermine any chance of him coming here by spreading rumors to create the impression that he is dirty.  He has never been found to be in violation of any NCAA rules. EVER!

This is the same tactic that was used against RR with practice gate.  It is someone with an agenda, maybe someone that was involved with undermining Miles during the last two searches.

If there is substantiated proof of anything that Reader 71 is spreading, then he should share it with his sources!

I don't have anything against him. Its all based on rumors and innuendo. I thought it was clear that it was my opinion: "I'm convinced..." Sorry if I made it seem like I have any proof. I've just heard a lot of unsavory stuff with regards to oversigning and the ugly greyshirt thing, plus the other rumors you hear. There might not be any fire, but there's a lot of smoke. He's a good coach. I'm just leery of having anyone less than squeaky clean in there. Playing by the rules is important to me, and I wont apologize for that. Others disagree and have differently weighted priorities. No biggie. Chill out.

I'm chilled.  Even though I called you out, my issue is not specifically with you.  I might be over sensitive to what I perceive as the undermining of the Miles hire the last two times.  Most of the justification seemed to be based on rumors and inuendo.

I don't like the oversigning situation in the SEC, but in my mind that is up to the NCAA to regulate and I like that the B1G has rules preventing it.

No worries, all good.  Always appreciate your perspective even if it is not aligned with mine.

For those of you who insist that Harbaugh is coming do me a favor:  go look at SF's schedule and tell me how they don't end up in the playoffs?  In fact, they are getting hot and healthy at the exact right time and I suspect are in for a very long playoff run.  Do you guys really think Harbaugh is leaving for a college job after either going very deep in the playoffs or maybe even making another Super Bowl appearance?  Keep dreaming.  I want him, but its not happening.  I would take Les and be happy about it.

Say what you want about him but he's maize and blue through and through.  He's not going to come here to break the rules.  He would come to enforce them.  Give the guy a chance.  I'm not saying he is coming but if he does please give him a chance before undermining him.  Your attitude doesn't help IMO even at this stage.

Good god... we will be lucky to attract HS coaches at this rate.  Bring on Faust.

Miles would not be able to start a hostess, grade altering or drug ignorance scheme here.  Michigan is miles away from the Oklahoma State of the mid 2000s.  Miles has mellowed with his baggage as well.  We could do much worse - Hoke, for example, is worse.  Mike DeBord is worse.  Harbaugh brings baggage as well.  I'll take baggage at this point.

I see your point, and I agree with you, of course.  Losing sucks and we need win.  However, to elaborate on my point, I'm not sure I would put winning above all else (not that that is what you're saying).  We do need to win.  Everyone knows that, but I don't want to sell our soul to do so.  Otherwise, if it's winning first, above all else, then we could just hire Bobby Petrino and let him have his way.  Hell, I bet he'd bring us a national championship in year 2 or 3.  Brady Hoke did everything right except win . . . and he's going to be gone as a result.  But the converse of Hoke, a coach that does everything wrong but win, isn't palatable to me either.  Again, I'm not saying this is what you're advocating.  I'm just using your point as an opportunity to elaborate on mine.

Wendy, I don't think you've been following the thread. Bacon says its not going to be an outsider. So I assume its Harbaugh, Miles, or Hoke (any other insider candidates?). In which case, I'd honestly rather have Hoke than Miles, knowing that Hoke isn't the answer. Which is why I said go after Harbaugh next year again. Also, this whole thing is reliant on the notion that those are our only candidates, which I think is stupid. But I'm trying to work from the OP.

There is no "next year" with Harbaugh. He's either coming here this year or never. Why would a year change anything except screw the next coach because Hoke couldn't recruit for crap for the entire year? If they kept Hoke unless they extended his contract he wouldn't be able to recruit. Your logic is insane.

If it is going to be Miles I believe the deal will be done before both schools go to their respective lousy bowls( if we win tomorrow). If is going to be Jim I believe the deal will happen within days of the niners last game.Of course I am operating under the assumption that the powers that be are already involved in backchannel negotiations.

Remember that, although Miles is a very good coach, he comes with some glaring ethical black marks. By oversigning, he forced some recruits out of LSU. The SI investigation, although flawed, revealed some ugliness on his watch. I'm guessing there's enough of this stuff out there to scare off Michigan, a program that will (or should) be hellbent on limiting the sleaze-factor. Which severely limits the pool of candidates.

I know what your referring too so my question is; prove it!!!!! Not whispers and innuendos but hard facts that prove all the BS the Lloyd people have been dropping hints about for years. And frankly after twenty years or so I DON''T GIVE A FLYING S#*T about.

"Nothing new really, but when JUB speaks, it's always worth a thread."

I would rather the opposite be true - only when its very very new, and very very substantiated by actual data, is something JUB says worth a thread.

Miles would be worth it just for the quotes:

7. "There was a contact between a football player and a cheerleader, male I might add. That male cheerleader clipped me from the side as I was running full speed, or slower than full speed, but generally, in the upper quadrant of speed. And I hit the ground pretty good." After colliding with a cheerleader while running onto the field for a game.

8. "When I wake up in the morning and I turn that film on, it's like reading a book and it's exciting. I don't read books, but if I read books it would be like reading a book." During a weekly press luncheon address.

Its got to be a slam-dunk hire...

A new President isn't going to mess around and have his legacy ruined out the gate by a questionable decision on this. He can get this wrong and have the program crater on his short watch..or go get this right..have a rapid turnaround in fortunes and he's set for a long, long time.

He's got to play it safe and go with the 'sure bet'.

if you combine this baseless speculaation with the debunked rumor that harbough is assembling his staff, Harbaugh to Michigan is pretty much written in stone.

I do think there is enough Har-buzz to view this CC with optimism. I doubt JUB is just spitballing.

OK fans, in the immortal words of Aaron Rodgers, R-E-L-A-X. Jimbo will be the new coach. Be patient and wait for the announcement. You can't expect Schlissel and Hackett to discuss things in public until the time is right.
