Bacon's Latest: New Coach Won't Be a Surprise Name

Submitted by BursleyHall82 on

John U. Bacon on WTKA this morning:

- The new coach won't be another RichRod (an outsider).

- The new coach won't be another Hoke (a mid-level relative unknown who does have Michigan ties).

- The new coach WILL be one of the 4-5 names that won't go away: Jim Harbaugh, Les Miles, etc.

He claims no inside knowledge - these are just gut feelings. Nothing new really, but when JUB speaks, it's always worth a thread.

Serious question, who the hell are 4-5 names?  John H seems like such a low probability but throw him in?  Austin seems like a guy a few of us talk about on the board, not a real candidate.  So JH and LM and who are 2-3 others?  Even if John is 1 not sure how you get to 4-5.  JUB has been saying Miles or one of the JHs for 2 months.  That's 3.

There's only 3 non outsiders that I want. I can't think of 1-2 others that I'd want. There's not really a lot of good outsider coaches this year anyways besides Mullen so we need to get Les Miles or the Harbaughs.

but this morning he did the same thing that everybody else is: talked off the top of his head with no inside information to back it up. He's just guessing, and admitted as such.

Maybe by saying another outsider he is referring to a Mullen type, who is most like RR. To me, the 4 are Harbaugh's, Les, and Stoops. Who knows, baseless speculation really by JUB

... of this outsider bullshit.  Since when did Michigan become so xenophobic?  The value that outsiders bring to any community is what leads to growth and innovation.  If this is a real attitude, we will fail in the long term.

I don't think of Jim Harbaugh as an insider. Once he left Michigan, he separated himself from the Michigan machine.  He spoke out against practices at Michigan, rankling just about everyone.  Harbaugh does what he wants and if anything should scare those who want to pull strings in the department, it would be that.

Look how college football has changed in the last decade. Just about every big time program is linked to some kind of rules violation. Auburn, Oregon, USC, FSU, UNC, the list goes on and on and on. This, in my opinion, is why Michigan wants a Michigan Man. The university still believes in winning the right way in a world that everyone is cheating. RR had a hard time recruiting the players he wanted because guys like Demary Dorsey couldn't make it through the admission department. Do you think Pac Man Jones would have made it in Ann Arbor, that's the kind of player RR liked. Guys that have that edge that comes from a rough back ground. I know Michigan uses the NCAA minimum to let players in, but how many other schools out there are willing to fudge some numbers to go below that standard to get a guy on campus.

Dorsey was not cleared by the NCAA clearinghouse, meaning he would not have gotten into any 4-year university. This is why he never played college ball other than for community colleges.

Pac Man was admitted into WVU and therefore would have been admitted at Michigan.

RR failed, because he hired GERG to run the D, after firing Schaffer (who by all accounts is actually a good coach).

Also, UNC isn't a good football program, and FSU has been better after their scandal. Moreover, just because a coach played for Bo, doesn't make them ethical. I don't give a damn what John U's gut says, but Schissel has said that being a "Michigan Man" is not a criteria for the job. How could he, since if it were that big a deal, Brandon would be President of the University.

I'm not trying to get into an argument over RR. We don't need a 10000 post thread. My point is there are lot of dirty football programs out there and Michigan doesn't want to be one of those. That's why, in my opinion, they want a coach that will win without being dirty. It's hard to find those coaches right now especially when the fan base only wants a "big name" coach.

His analysis of things past is value added...Rabacking the CC is not.  Sam's gut on the other hand is connected to internal rumblings in the athletic department.  I'm not convinced Sam even has connections to Hackett's process at this point.

better the offense had been before this season.   JUB also indicated Borges would be willing to bring back GERG to make sure that the defense had a former Michigan Man at the helm.

Harbaugh or Hoke. I would hate to see Les Miles representing Michigan. We might win some, but I am convinced he would run afoul of the rules. If we're going to limit this to insiders, its a Harbaugh now or keep Hoke and go after a Harbaugh later.
