That whole thing was such a horseshit claim by ESPN. Herbie gets threats from Buckeye fans all the time, and yet he's always on their campus. Thamel was just trumping up the drama to get some clout. So lame.

Feels like they're trying to reboot the NWO era, which I'm fine with, so long as Stone Cold comes back and gives Shane a stunner.

But it's not as deep with proven, talented guys as it was last year. Cam Goode was a nobody 3 star who played a lot and was decent when he was in there. This could be something similar. Any average Big10 starter you can get for DL should be an immediate take, at face value.

Everything. They need…

This is more than just…

This is more than just public criticism. The states are suing the NCAA over this. And if the past court cases tell us anything, it's that the NCAA will be getting the backfire. This is just PR to let boosters know the school isn't going to put up with this while it works out in the courts. Too bad M doesn't have the chutzpah to do this.

The incident I was referring…

The incident I was referring to was the previous one at Tenn, which was under Pruitt. Tenn had already received "sanctions" but instead of the mandatory post-season ban, they paid a fine. They should have had a much worse punishment but the AG threatened a suit and the NCAA rolled over.

I would be bet my life the Athletic Director and the AG were in communication about this. So no, Warde isn't the AG. My point is, Warde and the university can do a lot of things, and leverage a lot of power, to fight both the NCAA and the Big 10. They chose not to. The NCAA COI threw out the offered settlement of a four game suspension in 2024, that tells you these weren't people acting in good faith, and any other big time program would have never let it get to that point over a lunch during COVID.  If they had, they sure as hell wouldn't have had the coach take a self-imposed three game suspension over it. To think there weren't ways to fight this, or have a Plan B, is foolish. There were options, Michigan chose not to pursue them. That's the fact. You can say you're okay with the University not doing anything and rolling over. Or you can say you're not okay with the University rolling over. But you can't say there weren't other options.

He's having subs and thinks…

He's having subs and thinks it's awesome. No way he comes back.

Well, Tennessee threatened…

Well, Tennessee's AG threatened to sue the NCAA and because of that, the COI immediately went against their own rules by deciding not to give Tenn a post-season ban. So yeah, Michigan could have done a lot of things that other programs do to the NCAA that have proven effective at keeping them at bay.

Look at Kansas and the FBI having proof of what they did. Nothing happened. So the endgame could have been stall, treat them like crap, threaten to sue, actually sue, and do anything you can to keep an over-bloated, ineffective bureaucracy from arbitrarily ruining a football program. It's what every other big-boy program does.

I think everyone knows this…

I think everyone knows this isn't entirely on Warde, and that Jim has some culpability. But Warde Manuel can be replaced in about 90 seconds. Jim Harbaugh can't. So Warde needs Jim more than Jim needs Warde, and that's on Warde to fix.

I don't think the article does a bad job of pointing out the facts, but acting like these are two sides with the same leverage is not true. This statement rings a little hollow for me:

"While other schools might pull the plug from fatigue if their coach flirted with the NFL every offseason looking for an upgrade, Manuel has remained patient because he knows he has a proven winner."

No other school would pull the plug on a coach with Jim previous three seasons. Not a single one. So Warde doesn't have a choice but to be patient with Jim.

I stand corrected!

Does correcting that make you the Czar of the Semantics Overlords?

The funny thing was I typed Michigan, then was editing before I posted and just put University in there at the end not thinking. And now I get all the downvotes. But I should have known better than to assume everyone would look for substance over pedantry.

I never really thought the…

I never really thought the binder would do much other than be a petty collection of grievances M has collected, with maybe a few juicy nuggets from past recruiting battles. But the way the media talked about it (or at least how it was portrayed on here and WTKA) was that they were going to start slinging mud everywhere if the Big 10 went forward with it.

Agree with everything you said. Just surprised that the binder, along with a bunch of other claims people in the media made, were all for not. I'm not surprised they rolled over, I'm more surprised they acted like they weren't going to, and either bungled that or never intended to. Either way it was just a weird look for the University and media side and I haven't seen much follow up since.

I didn't say the stories…

I didn't say the stories were false. I don't know what was true and what wasn't. My point was, that it seemed like no one in the media knew either, and yet it was reported constantly for weeks that M would come out swinging. Then they didn't, and there's been no follow up about anything since. I was just asking if anyone knew why that was, and if people think there is going to be more to come after the season. Or is the Michigan Media, and the University, hoping it all goes away because they all have some egg on their face.

This, and what happens…

This, and what happens between Petitti and UofM is what I'm curious about. Has the conference or Petitti met with the university to try an figure out a way forward or do we expect that to come in the off-season.

I'm sure by now most of the media is focused on the Rose Bowl but it felt like after the OSU game until now, there's been nothing.

Apologies to the Semantics…

Apologies to the Semantics Overlords of MGoBoard.

Agreed, there wasn't "no…

Agreed, there wasn't "no resistance" but after hearing about the sound and fury the administration was going to bring down on the conference and other members, we basically got a wet fart.

And since then there's been nothing about what happens next, and what happened during those weeks.

The NCAA cheeseburger thing is a separate deal altogether since it's already in process and the events happened in the past. Could be a bigger story if there's a show-cause, but it will play out.

And maybe that's the answer…

And maybe that's the answer. No one in the media knew anything, and everyone just reported rumors.

I do agree about the NCAA thing with Jim potentially leaving. Why fight it if he's gone. But I was referring more to the Big10 and a fight with them. I don't think M is leaving the conference over this, but there has to be some more to what's going on between M and the conference right now. Maybe it will all come out and no one wants the distraction, but it feels like everyone in the media is hoping no one brings up how wrong everyone was about this.

Again, I'm not online for…

Again, I'm not online for Michigan news besides this site, so I don't see it all. But Balas, Webb, Hole, and even Brian, all seemed to have bad info they were reporting. I know it's about clicks, but in a niche market like UofM athletics, I'd think the major outlets need to be more correct than this.

I get the evolution of a…

I get the evolution of a story like this, but there were a lot of long-time insiders who were adamant Michigan was going to fight this, and put evidence out to smear other schools. Maybe that all comes from their sources and everything changed overnight, and if that's the case, then the school clearly got out over their skis in what they were saying. But I haven't seen anyone from M media talk about that aspect or a timeline of what happened that caused so many of them to be wrong about a lot of it.

Sorry.

Sorry.

I would guess a basic…

I would guess a basic contract was offered (duration, pay, etc.) and the negotiations were around the details and buyout, stuff like that. Jim could have probably signed the first offer and UM would have taken it. But a contract offer like this probably has round after round of negotiations and redlines. Typically what happens is the offering side (UM) sends over a contract to Jim's lawyer that outlines the high-level items they've agreed to already (pay, duration, assistant pool, etc.) then his lawyer sends back other provisions and carveouts that Jim wants. Then once the general terms are all agreed to they haggle over the wording and details. A lawyer could probably tell me there's a different process for this but in large business contracts this is typically how I've seen it handled. So yes, there was an "offer" but that's just the first offer, and no one ever takes the first offer.

They wouldn't be negotiating…

They wouldn't be negotiating if he didn't want to extend. And please don't come back and say it's some gamesmanship by JH until he can get an NFL offer. The man doesn't seem like he's ever been anything but direct about this stuff and doesn't seem like he ever wants to be involved in a PR battle with UM.

Never in the history of…

Never in the history of contracts has the phrase "temporarily rescinded" been used. Until now. So good job for making that up.

You really don't know what…

You really don't know what rescinded means. If someone rescinds a contract offer, it means it's cancelled or completely withdrawn and you're done. If a job offer gets rescinded, you don't keep negotiating with the person.

It's completely different than them pausing negotiations or continuing to negotiate while the investigation went on.

I would file Allar and…

I would file Allar and Klubnik under "not much else" as well.  Klubnik is talented but I'm not sure Dabo can bring back the glory days with his current staff and philosophy.

My buddy was telling me…

My buddy was telling me about his summer vacation with his family and brother-in-law's family. BiL spent the entire week miserably reading and revising a huge contract for some big corporate merger or acquisition. The wife said this is basically his life every day and he hates it but is hoping to make partner in 5 years. He'd been at it for over 5 years already. I don't know what the partnership track is at most firms but this was a large firm in a big city. Sounded like a meager existence.

On the other hand, I know attorneys who make a good living and don't kill themselves but are not in corporate law and seem to have done well with investing in property or businesses and the law is more of a side thing they keep for their own investments and partnerships.

On the flip side, a lot of…

On the flip side, a lot of people aren't cutting the checks after promising a recruit. Or at least the check is a lot lighter than they expected. Michigan is behind on the NIL stuff, but no one's going to claim they've wasted any money, or lied to kids, like a lot of schools have.

Should never have started as…

Should never have started as a freshman. I watched a couple of games and he looked overwhelmed and confused any time he dropped back. Athleticism and talent were obvious, but everything else was years away. He should have had the JJ freshman season. A few packages and mop up duty.

The culture fit is a valid question on this one. Not sure if JH and staff would want him running the offense, but they know him personally much better than any of us.

All the weird things…

All the weird things Stalions did (vast network, vacuum cleaner business, AirBnB stuff) doesn't even register in the top 100 of weird things CFB and CBB coaches have done early in their careers. I know everyone thinks he's crazy because this guy got wrapped up in a media drama that involves Michigan, but selling busted vacuums is nothing compared to what some of the crazies in college coaching have done to get by early on. If it comes out that in 1999 Kirby Smart washed windows on a street corner during the summer, and played the kazoo outside an Athens bar at night, just to make enough rent money, is anyone shocked by this?

College coaches are psychos and if Stalions never got caught, and ended up a P5 coach in 15 years, Thamel would have written an article about how he sold vacuums just to get by.

Not saying what he did was right, it's just not as crazy as people think. At least not in the college coaching world.
