Joey Galloway's comments during yesterday's game

Submitted by DenverRob on
Joey Galloway: "I am the fastest person in the big house today." in reference to the interview with shoelace. Denard polite as always said nothing. "Funchess is a bigger body, Michigan needs someone to take the top off of defenses." Funchess, chesson, Hayes and Norfleet all have sub 4.5 speed. Several comments about the interior dline when app state ran the ball when the game was over and back ups were in the game. Chris Spielman can call a game without bias. Robert Smith does a nice job in the studio. Kirk can call a good game. Why is Joey the most biased color commentator? ...and do we get them again this season? I also think the former PSU commentators do a nice job as well with out bias.

Galloway is horrible.  Not sure what ESPN's obsession with former OSU players is, but for some reason they like to hire them and assign them to UM games.

Galloway did a good job. Robert Smith needs to be beaten senseless to wipe that smug, shitty eating grin off his face. Nobody knows why it there, only that the world needs it rearranged.

whether anyone who gets as exercised about her as some of you do could accept any woman calling a game. She's thoroughly unobjectionable.

Galloway, on the other hand, just comes across as an amateur. Compared to someone like Gus Johnson he comes up so thoroughly short on facts, inspiration, and color that he's pretty close to pitiful. The racing comment distinguished itself in being the only thing of ANY interest he said all day. And THAT was so lame even Denard didn't rise to the bait. Some guy who played football in the 80s is talking sh*t about racing me? Yawn.

I finally got Dierdorf and Brandy to sync with the broadcast, and it was glorious.  Sayonara Mowins!

I've been a bit surprised that there haven't been a lot of comments (at least that I've seen) on the quality of the radio broadcast. I caught the highlight reel on MGoBlue.com, which synchs the video with the radio calls, and I thought it was a pretty good start for Brandstatter as a play-by-play guy. Because what they posted is all action, there was little of Dierdorf on it though. Anyone have an opinion of the new radio team?

much better than any of the TV announcers.  I plan to sync all the broadcasts.

But I am concerned about how a group of Michigan fans could sync with delayed radio while watching together in a bar.  I thought that the radio broadcasts this year were not supposed to be delayed.  What happened?

I'd heard the broadcast play-by-play would not be delayed for fans within the stadium as one of their "enhancements." Don't know that they committed that for the radio feed itself. I've always been able to synch the radio and video as long as I've had the ability to delay the video. If they don't delay the audio that might be a problem as the two likely will be out of synch just due to differences in transmission times. Seems harder to delay the audio if it turned out that it were broadcast before the video.

Well, there are several TBD times still on the schedule, of course, but the chances of seeing Galloway again among what is known are probably not great. I very much doubt his team gets the Penn State game, and the Miami (OH) and Indiana games are 3:30 PM kicks which, even if they end up on ESPN or ESPN2, still stand less than a 20% chance since I think 6 or 7 different teams from ESPN rotate through those games.

The team calling Saturday's Michigan game was weak.  Not so much biased, as flat-out bad.  Some examples include fucking up names of Michigan landmarks and players ("Union Hall," what?); sarcastic banter where the lead announcer was calling out Galloway's down-field blocking ability (you have to have some credibility to take swipes like that); total lack of knowledge of Michigan personnel, or context for who was playing where; trying to make Peppers' injury into a storyline.

I would rather suffer Galloway than either Robert Smith or Spielman.  Those two, but especially Smith, are glib, smug, and engage in subtle passive-aggressive Buckeye promotion.  Herbstreit is very, very good.  He knows what he is talking about and can call a game.

On the subject of commentators, whats with the B1G Network hiring non-B1G studio guys now??   I'd understand if those guys were good, but the ex-LSU receiver that was on the Friday studio show couldn't even pronounce some of the more popular B1G players' names correctly.   Surely they could find some more ex-B1G players that could do the same mediocre job.

I'm sure he got over it after all of these years.

But the important thing is that he does not reflexively hate us.  He can actually call a game with Michigan in it pretty much the same as any other game he calls.  Smith and Galloway can't get past the fact that it's Michigan, especially in the Big House.

That's fine.  I don't think I could go into Ohio Stadium to call a game and successfully hide the implied "assholes" that just comes out with every comment I make regarding Ohio State football.

"Robert Smith does a nice job in the studio."

Uhhhh... What? He's the biggest Ohio State homer and Michigan hater out of all of them. I don't think I have ever heard him say a negative word about Ohio State, or a positive word about Michigan, ever.

Was going to start crying when they showed the OSU halftime highlights when they were down 13-14. He might be the most biased out of them all.

Also, my most fond memory of Chris Spielman commentating a game is when he said the best chance for a defense to score a touchdown is when they are playing against the offense. I will never forget that comment.

I have listened to the likes of Pam Ward, Chris Martin, and too many horrible commentators but Beth Mowins did a decent job. Joey Galloway needs to take attention off himself and put it back on the game. Actually, I see a trend putting more emphasis on the announcing personalities taking away from the game but no one watches because of the announcer.

People will disagree with me, but I like how he talks about the particulars. His NFL perspective on technique is interesting. Hammond is okay for a Domer. Yeah, he looks like a mansheep, but that's good for humor.

Mayock talks about a football game as if it was a scouting combine. "Look at how big his hands are." "Look at that closing speed." "This kid can ______." No thanks. I like a color commentator who talks about the game, not the physical tools of the kids playing the game. I know the guy is fast, tell me why that is important in the context of his responsibility on this play.

Spielman is fine IMO, I think he speaks the truth, when a criticism is deserved, he dishes it, when kudos is deserved, he dishes that. He's not as polished as herbstreit but he's tolerable most of the time. To me, Galloway just comes across as not informed, doesn't know Michigan, just makes stupid comments.

I actually think Chris Spielman is very biased and goes out of his way to criticize Michigan more than other teams. I don't think Galloway is as bad as Spielman.

CLord

August 31st, 2014 at 7:33 PM ^

Yep.  If you broke down last year's Mich/Ohio game that Spielman did, I'd guesstimate he was 75% positive Ohio comments vs 25% negative Ohio comments, and about 45% positive Michigan comments vs 55% negative Michigan comments.

They need to get rid of ex-Alums doing games like that.

I don't think the issue is bias; the issue is that he's an idiot.

Most commentators are and the rest are instructed to dumb things down for the average viewer.

That's why this blog is so vital.

I would venture to guess that everyone who considers Spielman to be unbiased is a Lions fan. I think he's a good commentator, but he is as biased as anyone else.
