Chip Kelly to OSU as OC
February 9th, 2024 at 2:05 PM ^
That dude REALLY wanted out of UCLA lol
February 9th, 2024 at 2:09 PM ^
No kidding. How often has a P5 coach willingly taken a P5 coordinator job elsewhere?
February 9th, 2024 at 2:12 PM ^
Right? Especially in the same conference/division? 🤣
February 9th, 2024 at 3:15 PM ^
And in a state that has literal shit weather from November through May, sometimes longer, sometimes shorter. Not that Michigan better weather wise.
February 9th, 2024 at 4:35 PM ^
Michigan has better snow! …and everything else.
February 9th, 2024 at 9:24 PM ^
Literal shit? Eww.
February 9th, 2024 at 2:51 PM ^
I get the sense it was kind of mutual, and UCLA was fine with him exploring so they didn't have to fire him.
February 9th, 2024 at 2:58 PM ^
You are correct. They wanted him out, but didn’t want to pay him, and he wanted out.
February 9th, 2024 at 2:54 PM ^
Has it ever happened before? We’ll never hear the truth, but I’d love to know why.
February 9th, 2024 at 5:48 PM ^
There have been instances of G5 head coaches leaving to take P5 assistant jobs, but this might be the first time in the modern era that a P5 head coach willingly left to take an assistant job at another P5.
My take is that these older guys don't want to adjust to the post-NIL, post-portal era where head coaches have to contend with de facto pay-for-play, de facto free agency, and the need to re-recruit their own players every season. I'm sure that was a factor in the decisions of Harbaugh and Saban to leave on a high note. I wouldn't be surprised if Chip Kelly negotiated a contract condition whereby he won't have to do any recruiting.
February 9th, 2024 at 9:17 PM ^
That's too bad. His recruiting at UCLA was awful, was hoping he'd show that reverse Midas touch for OSU.
February 9th, 2024 at 11:27 PM ^
Pretty smart. At OSU he lets others do the pay for play to bring players to him.
February 9th, 2024 at 2:09 PM ^
Let’s poach their players from the portal!
February 9th, 2024 at 2:22 PM ^
If OSU pulls Garbers from UCLA, I give up.
February 9th, 2024 at 2:40 PM ^
They'll field an entire 11 man offense with just QBs at some point.
February 9th, 2024 at 2:17 PM ^
this has to be the weirdest coach move of all time.
February 9th, 2024 at 4:17 PM ^
This is right up there with Brady Hoke's second stint at San Diego State. For those that don't remember, in 2019 Hoke took the DL coach position under Rocky Long, who had succeeded Hoke after he left 9 years prior, only to have Long "retire" in 2020 leaving Hoke as the head coach again, with Long moving on to New Mexico as their DC.
Maybe this is what Kelly is doing, getting his foot in the door prior to Day "retiring" next year leaving Kelly as the Buckeyes head coach.
February 9th, 2024 at 4:37 PM ^
Day’s health will likely fail after 4 straight losses to Michigan.
February 9th, 2024 at 5:01 PM ^
It does seem like Day is hiring his replacement.
February 10th, 2024 at 8:39 AM ^
oh please DEAR LORD make it so
I had not previously wanted Ryan Day fired
but yes this would be even BETTER
February 9th, 2024 at 5:02 PM ^
This is a rational take.
February 9th, 2024 at 6:24 PM ^
Hard to see Ohio State ever hiring a HC who apparently doesn't like recruiting
February 9th, 2024 at 6:29 PM ^
He won't need to recruit with the "NIL" money they're throwing around. "Here's your check, son. Oh, and this is your coordinator. Say hello to your newest running back, Chip."
February 9th, 2024 at 11:19 PM ^
How does he try to sell this to the ohio players (football, not the R&B band)?
He just shit on his entire team, a team he recruited and made promises too.
Is he expected to recruit at ohio? Seems like an almost way too easy way to recruit against him. Plus, his offenses have been trash, DC's have figured out how to stop his lame unimaginative schemes.
One final thought, this happened right after Michigan hired Wink Martindale which to me is even more proof Ryan Day is in DESPERATION MODE to beat Michigan and this is one final sad desperate move for sure.
February 9th, 2024 at 2:21 PM ^
Did they just pull a Wink of the offense on us?
February 10th, 2024 at 7:37 PM ^
Some Winks grasp your attention more than others.
February 9th, 2024 at 2:51 PM ^
Didn't want to be in the same town as Harbaugh? He casts a large shadow in sunny SoCal.
February 9th, 2024 at 2:55 PM ^
He had to pay $1.5M for the privilege too. He might be working for free this year.
February 9th, 2024 at 3:01 PM ^
Bet he already had a deal worked out with UCLA that no buyouts would be due either way so both the school and Kelly could move on (seems like that's what they both wanted so it works for both parties).
February 9th, 2024 at 3:24 PM ^
Must have left a good chunk of coin on the table too
February 9th, 2024 at 5:21 PM ^
It has been widely rumored that Chip Kelly desperately wanted out of being a college head coach because he absolutely hated college recruiting + the new element of NIL management too (i.e. like Jeff Hafley at BC).
Ryan Day has already shown with Jim Knowles that he is comfortable with his main coordinator not being an active recruiter. Knowles only really meets recruit during on-campus visit, and travels minimally for recruiting. Otherwise, Knowles main and really only job is game-planning and defensive scheming.
It is likely that Day and Kelly came to a similar agreement. Offensive scheming, game-planning and play-calling as his top priority, and minimal recruiting responsibilities.
February 9th, 2024 at 6:51 PM ^
Recruiting and sleeping overs are no longer necessary. They just need their new Columbus Lamborghini dealership and someone to run it. That doesn’t require football knowledge. And they got that in their new AD.
February 9th, 2024 at 2:05 PM ^
Aw, you even formatted it right! Delete my thread Mods...
February 9th, 2024 at 2:07 PM ^
LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Please let this be true!
February 9th, 2024 at 2:13 PM ^
Wow, sorry to whatever Buckeye fan down voted me. But your team just hired a CFB OC who hasn't done anything innovative, exciting, or special in a zillion years.
February 9th, 2024 at 2:26 PM ^
I think you might be exaggerating. It seems more like half a zillion years..
February 9th, 2024 at 2:36 PM ^
But...but...but...trick play extra pointzzzzzzz!
February 9th, 2024 at 3:17 PM ^
They’re gonna run that gadget BS right into a defense full of 1st round tackles, linebackers and secondary. Bring it!
February 9th, 2024 at 3:01 PM ^
I wasn’t the one who DV’d, but I’m really excited to see him just call plays with Day (being very familiar with him) and not have HC duties to worry about. It really showed that we didn’t have Kevin Wilson up in the booth this year so I’m glad we have an experienced OC up there who is looking at everything!
February 9th, 2024 at 3:15 PM ^
I'd say leaving him leaving for the frickin' NFL (the Eagles??!!!) after what he did at Oregon was nuts but this is definitely a "good get" for you guys. After what Jim Harbaugh pulled, and your recent transfer portal success, it sure seems like the sky's the limit for you guys (and maybe even punching through the ceiling?).
February 9th, 2024 at 3:33 PM ^
I didn’t DV lol that’s a waste of time for me to do that here.
February 9th, 2024 at 3:56 PM ^
I can't read apparently. Right in the first sentence too.
February 9th, 2024 at 11:56 PM ^
Serious question from a Buckeye perspective.
If Day loses to Michigam. Does not win the Big Ten. And does not play in the National Championship Game. Does he lose his job?
I think he needs to hit one of three.
February 9th, 2024 at 3:35 PM ^
Downs was a good add, Judkins is toxic, and Sayin…who the hell knows? Howard was benched for Adrian Martinez at KSU.
OSU made some flashy adds, but they always have good players. Their problem is culture.
February 9th, 2024 at 3:48 PM ^
LaTerryal? Is that you?
February 9th, 2024 at 4:10 PM ^
After what Jim Harbaugh pulled ...you mean beating Day and OSU 3 consecutive years, winning a national championship, leaving a stacked defense, etc?
February 9th, 2024 at 7:51 PM ^
Careful looks like you got some nuts resting on your chin.
February 9th, 2024 at 3:05 PM ^
On the contrary I think this is a good hire for them. Your point is debatable, but even accepting it, "exciting or special" is not the sum total of a good OC. Kelly changed his offensive style to a much more run oriented power style at UCLA, and is still considered an excellent play caller.
February 10th, 2024 at 2:13 AM ^
By who? The PAC12? The 49rs? The Eagles? Uhhh...NO. DC's figured out his unimaginative offense years ago and Wink is gonna make him his BEE OTCH.
February 9th, 2024 at 3:39 PM ^
Chip Kelly’s offense, even with a bunch of talent, has regressed for years. It’s like hiring Rich Rodriguez today.
