Dear SEC: Alabama has 531 COVID cases in 3 days
The University of Alabama enters the kingdom of shame after hundreds of students were videotaped partying without masks. (And, yes, given that Alabama is the center of the college football universe, reports like this are relevant on this board.)

Right. Because that happened. 175,000 balcony deaths reported as COVID deaths to get the president.
August 24th, 2020 at 11:00 PM ^
We need to take a long hard look at banning balconies
August 25th, 2020 at 7:39 AM ^
You’re taking my balcony away over my dead body.
August 25th, 2020 at 6:55 AM ^
True story from a friend. He’s a cop. He has a couple that he is friends with and one of their Dad’s died from something completely unrelated to Covid. The hospital pushed for them to put Covid as the cause of death because “the hospital was so full due to Covid that he couldn’t get in to see someone right away.” They pushed back and refused.
But regardless of what side of the mask debate, the political spectrum, etc we fall on, I think examples like this prove out the scuttlebutt that the #s are being inflated.
This was in Michigan.
August 25th, 2020 at 8:04 AM ^
Is it because you're an idiot that you think people will believe this? That's not how death certificates are filled out.
August 25th, 2020 at 8:41 AM ^
"Excuse me ma'am, your husband has just passed away. I'm terribly sorry to pester you with this at such a difficult time, but have you decided what you would like us to list as the cause of death?"
August 25th, 2020 at 8:41 AM ^
Got DAMN that was a dumb story. Causes of death are not determined by family.
But his friend is a cop, so it must be true. Because police don't ever lie...
/s - jeezus fucking christ.

<redundant>
August 25th, 2020 at 10:13 AM ^
I love how people that claim the numbers are overinflated conveniently ignore the fact that deaths attributed to pneumonia, etc are way up across many states. 3-6 times more than normal through the first 8 months of the year. Do you really believe those are all deaths due to pneumonia unrelated to Covid? The numbers if anything are understated.
August 25th, 2020 at 10:28 AM ^
About 200,000 more people have died than on average in previous years, so the official number of COVID deaths is low, if anything.
August 24th, 2020 at 8:40 PM ^
Be careful. You're going to piss off the mask or die crowd.
August 24th, 2020 at 8:51 PM ^
Am I in that crowd because I questioned his claim? Or can I stay in the masks are a definitively proven method to reduce pathogen spread crowd?
August 24th, 2020 at 9:51 PM ^
I'd like to see an updated video from that doctor, with maybe a little less drama on the way he presents his ideas. The first few minutes of it was interesting and pretty accurate. The rest of it, outdated.
I'm guessing, from the data he mentioned on Covid numbers, that it was recorded back in late March, maybe early April.
August 24th, 2020 at 9:09 PM ^
Yeah, the mask mafia is always ready to put you in your place on this board. It'll be interesting to see how they react when they lose their jobs during the next lockdown and if they think it was worth it then.
Also kinda curious how the demographics play into it. Older people have much more to fear of this virus than the younger folk.
August 24th, 2020 at 10:02 PM ^
I would rather lose my job , than my life .
Its no big deal to wear a mask .
Wearing one makes my glasses fog up some times . I dont really want to wear a mask. But i dont want to get sick if i can avoid it .
August 25th, 2020 at 9:16 AM ^
I've spent the last 1.5 weeks in Mexico.
It's almost 100 degrees and 90% humidity.
You have to wear a mask everywhere in public - outdoors, indoors, driving your private car. Only exception is exercising, then you carry a mask to put on when you stop.
It's just not a big deal. Everyone is doing it. No one is whining about freedom, medical exemptions, etc.
August 25th, 2020 at 11:02 AM ^
Yup, driving to work I see daycares/elementary school kids happily wearing masks. A literal 3 year old is walking around wearing a mask, some of look like "surgical masks" or mini-KF94 (i.e., these are not some super loose bandanna).
The stupidity of a mask "debate" is that we are stuck talking about this... rather than about the type of mask (KF94 should be universally available), $ and tech to retrofit shared spaces for airflow turnover/ventilation or things like UV sterilization at the ceilings etc.(e.g., classrooms, nursing homes)...
August 24th, 2020 at 11:39 PM ^
My guess is the reaction to losing their job would be similar to my reaction losing football: you fucking idiots should have worn a mask from the start cause it’s common fucking sense, and then this shit would be over with like it is in half the world and I wouldn’t have lost my job.
something like that. No reason a virus that lasts a matter of weeks should still be ravaging a modern country months later. It’s pretty simple really, a coherent plan could have snuffed this thing out.
August 25th, 2020 at 8:52 AM ^
Wearing a mask will cost me my job? How the fuck does that happen?
August 24th, 2020 at 8:58 PM ^
That many positives and no deaths, is a good thing. Become immune. Never should have shut down any schools, but taken measures for the teachers.
August 25th, 2020 at 8:54 AM ^
Those who die don't do it immediately, and the immunity doesn't last. You can get it again.
August 25th, 2020 at 10:48 AM ^
" the immunity doesn't last. You can get it again."
Got a cite for that?
Just a reminder, if true that means the vaccine isn't going to work either.
August 25th, 2020 at 12:40 PM ^
https://www.contagionlive.com/news/first-covid-19-reinfection-case-hong-kong
Just means you have to get a booster vaccine every 3 to 4 months until it goes away.
August 25th, 2020 at 1:42 PM ^
LOL, a single case out of China isn't really proof.
In other words it doesn't work. How many people do you really think are going to take a rushed not very effective vaccine multiple times a year? If this is the vaccine we're supposed to lock ourselves at home waiting for...
August 24th, 2020 at 10:22 PM ^
You came out of a 10 1/2 month hibernation to troll the board with 3 nonsense posts, "Tate" ?
August 24th, 2020 at 10:59 PM ^
Are we just letting misinformation fill the board now?
August 25th, 2020 at 12:06 AM ^
Nope.
That, essentially, was my warning to "Tate".
What saved him from an immediate banning is that I chose to give him the benefit of the doubt.
If he then continues to post such misinformation, then clearly he's made his choice and then I follow up with the banhammer.
August 25th, 2020 at 8:05 AM ^
In a reply in the thread he literally said he's doing it to troll people. But sure, just give him a fucking warning that he may or may not ever see. Super helpful.
August 24th, 2020 at 10:39 PM ^
Oh FFS! Good to see another person here who realizes that Covid isn’t a death sentence. It’s the flu’s Chinese cousin.
Use facts and stats to prove me wrong people.
August 24th, 2020 at 11:27 PM ^
You'd have to make a coherent, falsifiable statement before anyone could attempt to prove you wrong.
August 25th, 2020 at 12:24 AM ^
FLUS ARE COUSINS! FACT!
August 25th, 2020 at 6:20 AM ^
Ok we get this person is fine with deaths, doesn’t care that we lead the world in deaths cause hey it’s maybe 1%. But he should be thinking of the economic impact of hospitalizations and even mild symptoms can have long term consequences and can dehabilitate the physical condition (thus might ruin athletic careers): https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-08-24/covid-s-lingering-malaise-adds-to-35-trillion-economic-cost
August 24th, 2020 at 8:32 PM ^
If the SEC really wanted football so badly, they should have gone with no kids on campus and dedicated/isolated housing for the teams.
The idea of safely playing football is much less absurd than safely having kids on campus, which is quickly proving to be true. And now they've made it just that much harder to play football as a result.
August 24th, 2020 at 8:53 PM ^
You are exactly right on this, but it would have been a bad look for them. Now they can say "we tried" and dismiss the on campus semester in the best interest of the students and still play Foosball.
August 25th, 2020 at 12:09 PM ^
Real question. Is the the purpose of the University of Alabama to give people a higher level of education or to play football?
August 24th, 2020 at 8:36 PM ^
Honestly? Fuck em.
You bought your ticket, you take the ride.
August 24th, 2020 at 8:45 PM ^
They're still human beings. And as crazy as it seems, there are actually people who attend or work at the university who don't care at all about football
August 24th, 2020 at 9:36 PM ^
I know. And I don't really feel that way deep down. The antiscience brigade is just exhausting.
Maybe I'll eat Mrs. Hatter's ass for a bit to relax.
August 24th, 2020 at 8:46 PM ^
This may come as a surprise, but... they’re fine with that. That’s actually their whole point.
August 24th, 2020 at 10:48 PM ^
It’s. Not. An. Individual. Choice.
It’s a communicable disease.
In a world with gravity, actions have consequences.
August 24th, 2020 at 11:00 PM ^
I didn’t say anything at all about it being an individual choice...
August 25th, 2020 at 10:17 AM ^
This may come as a surprise, but... they’re fine with that.
My apologies for posting something overtly political, but since Alabama (the state) is one of the reddest, this graphic is stunningly well-correlated with your comment:
August 25th, 2020 at 12:12 PM ^
This is terrifying. I guess republicans really will die for their freedom...
August 25th, 2020 at 12:29 PM ^
Even scarier is that those percentages will stay the same at 250k. Or 500k. As long as their guy is in charge.
August 26th, 2020 at 10:41 AM ^
To your point, if Trump were a Democrat, I have no doubt that the responses would have been reversed entirely. We'd all like to believe that "our guy" wouldn't be so dumb, but history has shown that "dumb" and "acceptable" are almost purely a function of tribal instinct.
I fucking hate politics.
August 24th, 2020 at 8:37 PM ^
I'm shocked they're still using videotape. Everything else seems pretty much expected....
August 24th, 2020 at 8:43 PM ^
I guess they are going to go with the infect the whole campus quickly so everyone will be immune strategy? That is a crazy rate though. For perspective Colorado had 141 new cases today in a state of 5.7 million people. The university of Alabama has more than that as a daily rate among a population of 38,000.
Assuming some percentage has already had it and some percentage is naturally immune they could achieve heard immunity there by the end of October.
We probably should get some scientists down there to study this as it could provide some good data around several unknowns about this virus
August 24th, 2020 at 8:55 PM ^
How are they going to stop it from spreading beyond the students? That's a question for every school with an outbreak. Many are in places that haven't been hard hit yet.
August 24th, 2020 at 8:45 PM ^
Some people just have a different risk tolerance. Half of this board sees 500 cases and thinks the world is going to end. They probably see 500 cases and shrug their shoulders.
