If it was anyone besides OSU I would be okay with it. Always found it funny that Matty didn't leave for a DC position. Big loss but hopefully we replace him with another great up and comer with great recruiting chops.

Gotta be just a purely financial move. The big bonus to him coming back to Michigan was that his daughter and grandchild live in A2. For GM to uproot from that and spend a few years in that shithole Columbus simply had to be for stockpiling as much $$$ as he can before he retires.

Greg Mattison is playing chess while everyone else is playing checkers.  Hes accepted the job so that he can sabotage OSU next year and guarantee us a win.  A true Michigan man!

Sucks because it's OSU and he's a very good recruiter. As long as we get a quality DL coach, it's not all that big of a deal IMO. He wasn't going to be our DC and people would have flipped if he was. He took a promotion and a pay raise. Sucks because it's fucking OSU.

After sitting back and thinking about it, this isn't as bad as we think. Day hiring a 70 year old to be their DC doesn't seem like the greatest idea, especially considering he was merely good never great here as a DC. The OSU fans seem to be pissed. That being said, he's still leaving us for them, so piss off Greg.

If it came to choosing between Don Brown or Mattison to be Michigan's DC for playing OSU or a team that has equal or better talent on the offensive side of the ball...I'm going with Mattison.

I know GM isn't going to be there long, but I think what schemes he would bring to the table would be more viable than what DB against teams of equal or superior athletic talent.

First, Don Brown interviews at Temple and now Mattison going to OSU. Something amiss in AA. Pushed out by Harbaugh? Or something going on inside the program?

Mattison is telling players that Harbaugh/Brown did not renew his expiring contract.  More to this story ... maybe the self-scout of the defense put the blame on the DL for the season-ending meltdown or maybe they promised the DL job to Washington (+$) to keep him or maybe both?

Next move?  I am betting Partridge back to LBs/Vipers and Bush (senior) to Safeties.

Agree.  This will give Michigan a chance to find a new, smart, younger guy to replace him, who might be able to get our d-line to a higher level.  This year in big games when it counted, the d-line (outside of Winovich and maybe Paye) didn't get the job done.  Not nearly enough push or penetration.  (No rated X comments below please)

If OSU wanted him after hanging 40+ on HIS defense.....it to speaks him being very good but limited by either a lack of 5* recruits (not a problem at OSU) or by circumstances outside of his control (DC preferences or HC preferences for certain looks, etc.).

Harbaugh has a lot to answer for because it seems like this place is tanking very quick under his brand of leadership.

Mike Sullivan of 97.1 The Ticket tweeted that Mattison called up each of his dlineman and told them that Harbaugh and Brown chose not to renew his contract, so he was going to go to OSU.

FWIW, I don't know how connected Sully is since he's not a real journalist or reporter. But it is interesting to consider. Maybe Michigan was going to let him go and promote Partridge all along.

EDIT: Sam Webb shot that down quickly
