Greg Mattison Leaving Michigan to be Ohio State DC
January 7th, 2019 at 1:55 PM ^
I think we’re running the same offense, so it’s possible!
January 7th, 2019 at 1:39 PM ^
If it was anyone besides OSU I would be okay with it. Always found it funny that Matty didn't leave for a DC position. Big loss but hopefully we replace him with another great up and comer with great recruiting chops.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:41 PM ^
Brady Hoke?
January 7th, 2019 at 1:42 PM ^
It is kind of hilarious but I don't think it would be that bad of a fit. (as D-line coach).
January 7th, 2019 at 1:58 PM ^
Was my first thought. Can coach dline. Cannot do other things
January 7th, 2019 at 2:57 PM ^
On the locked on podcast they made mention of wanting to get the former CMU head coach on staff as a special teams coach. IDK if that will be the move, but would not be surprised by it if it is.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:39 PM ^
Holy shit. This is honestly shocking. Time to get some new up and coming blood into the defensive side of the ball.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:39 PM ^
So Zach Harrison decision makes even more sense now.....
January 7th, 2019 at 2:48 PM ^
You do realize that they have Larry Johnson who is widely considered the best D-Line coach in the business right? or did you meant to have /s there after
January 7th, 2019 at 1:40 PM ^
Dude will turn 70 next season. Probably not as big a loss as a lot of people are going to make it seem.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:40 PM ^
eleven warriors are not that impressed. We are all pissed
what is going on
January 7th, 2019 at 1:42 PM ^
Would you be? Imagine if we had scooped up a position coach who had been a coordinator for them when they were terrible? (Not that they have a time that is comparable to the Hoke years in recent memory)
January 7th, 2019 at 1:45 PM ^
you mean like when we took warriner (sp?). we swapped and O-line coach for a D-line coach to be named later. turns out it was mattison. love the guy, but its CFB and sometimes that's the way the ball bounces.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:53 PM ^
Gotta be just a purely financial move. The big bonus to him coming back to Michigan was that his daughter and grandchild live in A2. For GM to uproot from that and spend a few years in that shithole Columbus simply had to be for stockpiling as much $$$ as he can before he retires.
January 7th, 2019 at 2:38 PM ^
Warriner didn't go from OSU to UM. He was at Minnesota when you got him.
January 7th, 2019 at 3:01 PM ^
At first I was like "WTF IS GOING ON".....now I am like, why did they hire him?
January 7th, 2019 at 1:40 PM ^
This looks a lot worse than it is.
He was basically let go from Michigan and he got a promotion at a top 5 team. He left us once to go to ND.
January 7th, 2019 at 2:40 PM ^
Gotta disagree. Not at nearly 70 years old. I am disappointed that Mattison is leaving, but I think OSU probably could have done better (and probably not a lot worse).
January 7th, 2019 at 1:40 PM ^
Greg Mattison is playing chess while everyone else is playing checkers. Hes accepted the job so that he can sabotage OSU next year and guarantee us a win. A true Michigan man!
January 7th, 2019 at 1:59 PM ^
I like the way you think.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:40 PM ^
11Warriors in a meltdown at this move. Guess they wanted someone else
January 7th, 2019 at 1:43 PM ^
....who Don Brown???
/ducks
January 7th, 2019 at 3:24 PM ^
It was reported at first that Mattison was going to be DC. Now looks like he will at best be co-DC.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:40 PM ^
Sucks because it's OSU and he's a very good recruiter. As long as we get a quality DL coach, it's not all that big of a deal IMO. He wasn't going to be our DC and people would have flipped if he was. He took a promotion and a pay raise. Sucks because it's fucking OSU.
January 7th, 2019 at 2:33 PM ^
Al Washington will be DL coach
January 7th, 2019 at 1:41 PM ^
?G Matt
January 7th, 2019 at 1:41 PM ^
After sitting back and thinking about it, this isn't as bad as we think. Day hiring a 70 year old to be their DC doesn't seem like the greatest idea, especially considering he was merely good never great here as a DC. The OSU fans seem to be pissed. That being said, he's still leaving us for them, so piss off Greg.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:45 PM ^
Who hacked your account??
Jk, couldn't help it. I agree
January 7th, 2019 at 1:51 PM ^
If it came to choosing between Don Brown or Mattison to be Michigan's DC for playing OSU or a team that has equal or better talent on the offensive side of the ball...I'm going with Mattison.
I know GM isn't going to be there long, but I think what schemes he would bring to the table would be more viable than what DB against teams of equal or superior athletic talent.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:41 PM ^
First, Don Brown interviews at Temple and now Mattison going to OSU. Something amiss in AA. Pushed out by Harbaugh? Or something going on inside the program?
January 7th, 2019 at 1:50 PM ^
Mattison is telling players that Harbaugh/Brown did not renew his expiring contract. More to this story ... maybe the self-scout of the defense put the blame on the DL for the season-ending meltdown or maybe they promised the DL job to Washington (+$) to keep him or maybe both?
Next move? I am betting Partridge back to LBs/Vipers and Bush (senior) to Safeties.
January 7th, 2019 at 2:03 PM ^
Washington to DL?
January 7th, 2019 at 4:26 PM ^
"Schiano takes the Temple HC job, and Don Brown stays at Michigan" sounds like a good arrangement to me.
January 7th, 2019 at 8:55 PM ^
Grinch and Sciano left OSU. Wonder if something is amiss in the lockeroom in Columbus?
January 7th, 2019 at 1:41 PM ^
I don't know why the guy always seems to leave for our rivals (first ND, now OSU) - but I think he's replaceable.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:55 PM ^
Agree. This will give Michigan a chance to find a new, smart, younger guy to replace him, who might be able to get our d-line to a higher level. This year in big games when it counted, the d-line (outside of Winovich and maybe Paye) didn't get the job done. Not nearly enough push or penetration. (No rated X comments below please)
January 7th, 2019 at 2:48 PM ^
If OSU wanted him after hanging 40+ on HIS defense.....it to speaks him being very good but limited by either a lack of 5* recruits (not a problem at OSU) or by circumstances outside of his control (DC preferences or HC preferences for certain looks, etc.).
Harbaugh has a lot to answer for because it seems like this place is tanking very quick under his brand of leadership.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:42 PM ^
Leaves M for ND. Leaves M for OSU. Hmmm.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:43 PM ^
sounds like a Benedict Arnold to me......
January 7th, 2019 at 1:48 PM ^
So when does he rejoin AND then leave for staee???
January 7th, 2019 at 3:34 PM ^
I almost edited my post to add this.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:42 PM ^
Mike Sullivan of 97.1 The Ticket tweeted that Mattison called up each of his dlineman and told them that Harbaugh and Brown chose not to renew his contract, so he was going to go to OSU.
FWIW, I don't know how connected Sully is since he's not a real journalist or reporter. But it is interesting to consider. Maybe Michigan was going to let him go and promote Partridge all along.
EDIT: Sam Webb shot that down quickly
January 7th, 2019 at 1:46 PM ^
"Don't know how connected Sully is."
Not connected. At all.
January 7th, 2019 at 2:31 PM ^
Another update, Sully is now claiming he has text messages from current Michigan players saying that Mattison told them he wasn't going to be renewed. Lol, what a mess
January 7th, 2019 at 1:48 PM ^
A lot of the d lineman are tweeting right now... I don't think anyone knew last night.... Sully's got nothing.
"Business is business" is the common theme of the tweets.
January 7th, 2019 at 1:57 PM ^
Business is business.... except for "student athletes" of course
January 7th, 2019 at 1:42 PM ^
wait wait.
maybe he's going to pull a Dan Enos and go to uhrm....... Clemson?
