Don Brown A Finalist for Temple HC Job

We could find out today the new Temple football coach. Three DC's Mike Elko (Texas A&M), Manny Diaz (Miami), & Don Brown (Michigan) are thought to be in the running. Based on some conversations, my gut says Elko is the favorite, but we will see.

Feels like Brown is going to get a raise.

I highly doubt he leaves for Temple.  It also sounds like Elko is out of the running, so my guess is Manny Diaz is the pick here.  Young guy, clearly wants to be a HC, and his defense at Miami this year was championship-caliber but was let down by the offense.

At least 5 Michigan coaches are garnering interest from other programs. Brown, Zordich, Hamilton, Warinner, and Moore.

Some Analysts look to move this time of year too.

Impossible. I don't believe you. How could "totally qualified for a top job and not at all a nepotism hire" Jay Harbaugh not be on that list?

I assume Moore is waiting to take over the DL from Mattison? Hopefully that, and a raise, keeps him here. On the other hand, he's a Don Brown guy so if Brown goes probably Moore does too.

Let it go. Jay may have been a nepotism hire at Michigan, but he has done a hell of a job with it. His position groups have never been weakness and I would argue are even the top 3 strengths of the team. I’m interested to see what happens now that Higdon is gone and if Michigan can maintain a decent ground game.

Also Moore is a TE coach. Maybe you mean Washington who is currently coaching LBs but used to coach DL?

If Brown does leave, It would be good to give Partridge a shot and promote Devin Bush Sr to safety coach. I am also interested in Mike Elston who is NDs Dline coach and was passed for someone else last year for DC. He’s a former Michigan player so he would make a great fit in Ann Arbor.

Indeed, you're correct. I meant Washington.

I'm glad that Jay has been good in the jobs that he's been given (not earned) and he's a decent recruiter. However, look at his two groups - they're the two most helped by Harbaugh's system. Also, when he took over the RB's their blocking ability dropped pretty dramatically.

The fact remains though if Jay was a qualified well-respected position coach, he'd be getting a sniff by teams not run by someone in his family.

Michigan isn't in a position to have anyone on staff unless they're the absolute best that we can get. Is that Jay? I don't think so.

Nepotism hire...

He was an NFL QC coach for 3 years (including a Super Bowl win) and came here to coach the tight ends and assist with special teams. His position group was extremely productive.

He then moved on to being the running backs coach, helping produce our first 1,000 yard back since Fitz Toussaint. Higdon finished top 10 nationally and 2nd in the conference in yards per game. Again, extremely productive.

All the while being a top recruiter on the staff.

If his last name were anything other than Harbaugh, you’d be lauding what a positive and productive hire he has turned out to be. Cut the shit. Jay has been fine in his position.

Interesting to see Moore and Zordich on that list. Because Zordich is kind of a gruff, old school guy and hiring that kind of guy doesn't seem to be the trend these days. On the other end of the spectrum is Moore who Harbaugh identified as an up and comer because of his personality and recruiting acumen. And both of those guys would presumably be coordinators. Meanwhile Pep and Brown going for HC jobs.

Hiring great assistants is a double edged sword cause you lose them so often.

Whether people like to admit it or not, Harbaugh’s assistants are really damn good. It’s not a suprise to me these guys are getting looks at different programs for better jobs. We are gonna have lots of coordinator and position coach turnover year-to-year. That’s what happens even at pretty good programs. Bama deals with it, Ohio St loses coaches every year, Oklahoma, Georgia just lost their DC. The only one I think that absolutely they need to retain is Warinner. Do everything you can to retain him until a program offers him something U of M just can’t match.

I have a friend at Temple.  He tells me that Don is high on the list but they are unsure if he can be had.  That is, they think UM will do whatever they can to keep him.

Need a money cannon. That said, it really seems like Don likes how much of a difference he can make for the guys here.

I have no doubt he would excel anywhere, but Michigan seems to attract the kind of Dude he can mold into something special. That benefit goes both ways, so Michigan should be comfortable showing it's appreciation.

if Don Brown leaves I believe it will have a greater impact on Michigan than Urban leaving will on OSU. The gap will just keep on growing...

I'm very interested to see what comes of this. This team needs continuity (except perhaps for Pep), and this year if feels like we have the staff in place to provide that but if Don leaves... it may open up the floodgates on the defensive staff - CP, coach Z, Greg Mattison?

Sure, I’m not happy about that debacle either. Throw in Notte dame and PSU last year. Here’s the thing tho, without Don Brown, do we win at Northwestern, vs Wisconsin, heck even at MSU this year? His defenses shut most teams down, particularly in second half of games. Heck, even the second half at ND, we had a chance to win the game because of the defense. So to simply put it on OSU’s debacle doesn’t tell the whole picture. I believe we are a 2-3 loss team heading into Columbus this year without Don Brown. But that’s just my opinion

I don't believe I will be upset if he leaves.  Harbaugh will find somebody else, and although he is a phenomenal coach, we still seem to get torched against  the quality opponents and Ohio state for that matter.  How unprepared we were for that game on defense is still astonishing  to me.

Durkin had some great defensive performances too. Don't act like you knew who Don Brown was before he was Michigan's DC. Harbaugh could have another great coach in mind already.

Hiring defensive talent, weirdly enough, is where Harbaugh has most clearly earned a "he's got it covered" since coming here.
