Honest and mostly Objective assessment of this Team

Coaching:

We need an offensive coordinator, and Jim needs to go out a find the best available OC this offseason.  I think its time to part ways with Pep Hamilton.  There is a lack of creativity in play calling and play design.  We need more passing spread and overall more modern offensive game plan which would maximize Patterson's skill set.  Our recruiting is headed in the right direction, but we lack explosive athletes in the slot as of right now.  I think Ronnie Bell can be that guy next year (hoping).

As far as Game planning, that was a terrible job both offensively and defensively.  On offensive, we did not use nearly enough motioning and shifting which OSU defense has struggled with this year in the run game.  Also we failed to put their linebackers out in space covering our players outside of that TD pass to Evans.

I would love for us to stop forcing Wide receiver screens to 6'4 receivers that are not really shifty or able to break tackles.  Also speaking of screens, why do we throw more TE screens than we do screens to our running backs who can be explosive in the open field.

On defense, I LOVE Don Brown but he needs to adjust to what the team does before the game starts not after giving up 21 points.  Everyone knew coming in that this would be the Best QB we would face so far and the best and fastest receivers, but we continued to go man to man against there crossing routes and could not get home with the rush.  I may be wrong but I did not see any hands up with our D Line against there quick passing game.  We need to be more multiple and flexible on defense especially when that team has 11 games of film to game plan against our defense.

Offense:

First off all, I think we will have Patterson coming back and he will be more comfortable in the offense.  The offensive line will return 4 players that will continue to get better.  I think our running game could be even more explosive with a better OC.  What we need is better TE play, McKeon has been a disappointment all year and Gentry was surprisingly bad today dropping two catchable balls, one that could have been a TD.  We also need more explosiveness in our receivers after the catch.  The receivers are rarely are wide open or breaking tackles after the catch.

Defense:

We need better play at the Safety position.  Muetellus is getting better, but Kinnel as been a liability all season, and is always late to the ball in passing situations.  I doubt both of our corners come back next year but this was the first time they were really tested and they immediately went after Watson all game.  I think both Hill and Long played ok today from what I saw, and hope at least one of them comes back next year.  Hudson made no impact plays today, and that Viper position has not looked all that special at all these season, and honestly has not looked special since Peppers (for obvious reasons).  More rangy explosive Linebackers like Bush in the front seven will be needed going forward.  Teams continue to put our linebackers in space against running backs and the only one that could handle that responsibility recently has been Bush.

In final, I think Jim Harbaugh has done a hell of job getting our team out of the pathetic abyss that struggled against teams like Akron, Rutgers, and Toledo; he will need to improve the offense to become championship level in the future.  By improving that offense, I mean (1). An actually OC that is not Pep. (2). More modern offense that puts our athletes into space. (3). More explosive WRs, especially in the slot. (4). Better play calling and play design in the pass game.

That is my two cents.

So much complaining about play calling and the offense and lack of an OC.  I don't get it.  We had 5 TDs and should have had 6 if #83 doesn't drop it.  That should be enough!  Don Brown and the D got their asses kicked ... that is why we lost.  Over and over we knew that slants were our kryptonite, and that OSU ran a lot of slants ...... and then the game started and we lost to 1000 yards of crossing routes.  This is not on the offense or or play calling or lack of an OC.

Because 2 of those TDs were in garbage time and another was gifted to us by a fumble on a kick off.  Yes the D was miserable, outcoached and just lost out there but let’s not pretend the offense was anything close to great today. This wasn’t the OU-WV game. We got outclassed in all aspects today.

This is the same kind of idiotic take people had after the ND game when they claimed it was “close,” and then turned around and said 21-7 vs MSU was a domination.

The game was 41-19 before garbage time, and 6 of those points came from a gift of a fumble on a kick off. The offense was just as terrible as the defense.

This! These trolls are ruining this site.

I should know better than to log on after a loss.  Time to take a break from the site again like I did after ND.

Fire Harbaugh because weve only won 10 games in 3 of 4 years?  These idiots who say it isn't good enough and shout "the 90s". How many 10 win seasons did Lloyd have?

Who would you rather have coaching here? Supply an alternative or STFU.

1. Fire Pep

2. Hire a modern OC with playcalling authority

3. Recruit much better on the Oline

It looks to me like our talent level will drop off in 2019 so this may not get better anytime soon

idk, i see a similar offense but with more QB runs.  if people don't see the dual threat ability in mccaffery and milton, they never will.  UM had to protect shae this year.  next year, not so much.  the backups will be experienced enough to take over.  release the hounds!

The defensive talent may drop off next year. But the offense should be the best we’ve seen in quite some time. 2019 will be a very interesting year as our perceived strength (defense) and our perceived weakness (offense) switch places. Also, we may have found something in Moody, which is nice to see if in fact we’re going to need to score more points next year to make up for the losses on D.

Having worked in the scouting department of an NFL team, I can only assume that Patterson will return. Unless he completely disregards the feedback he’ll assuredly get regarding his draft position, he’ll be back. He’s a good college QB at this point, but an NFL caliber QB he is not..... at least at this point in time.

The potential for the offense was there. Nico and DPJ would have had a thousand yards receiving in Urbans system. All year the ozone was questioning why we refused to embrace the WR talent and they were dead nuts on. What good is having a hot rod if you never get on the gas. We have talent but need a Joe Moorhead type coordinator to utilize it.

39 points should be enough, but agreed, our offense needs to be rethought.  Of all the reasons we could have lost, I would have thought “no pass rush” would have been the least likely reason.

We didn't hire Jim Harbaugh for 3rd, 3rd, 4th, and 2nd place finishes in the division.  Sad truth is that until Urban leaves OSU, we will not beat them.

This is such a bullshit take. Even if OSU “wants it more” or “thinks about this game more”, it doesn’t make a difference. To think that UM players don’t want or care enough about this game is ridiculous. It comes down to gameplan/coaching, Jimmies and Joes, and execution. Thinking about The Game in March makes zero difference.

Ok, can you share what amount OSU players want it more? Like, do they want it 15% more than UM players or is it like 38 want it mores?

Its ridiculous to think that UM players don’t want to win or think about this game    Hell if anything, maybe they think about it too much which causes them to shit the bed every year. That is more plausible.

Also, I have “strapped on the pads” too brah. Not that it makes any difference either.

So meaningless then???

Also, I don’t know why I’m bothering to hang around here and argue with idiots, but your team just shit slammed its rival and played their best game of the year with a chance at the playoff and you are hanging around their message board right after. Me a douche?

UM didn't lose because they didnt want it enough.  They lost because they couldnt defend a mesh concept on D.  On O they weren't given enough opportunities to make plays and when they were there failed to make them for the most part.   Why does OSU recruit  so many guys from TX? Why do they worry about talent.  Just get 11 guys from OH who want it the most.

Truth.  The straight up shit talking, grandstanding and t-shirt ordering crowd got rolled up on by a talented business-like Team of guys who just put everything they had into this game.   It would be nice if we couldve had that MSU level of hate for this showdown.  Maybe next year we focus on gameplanning instead of  making t-shirts.  OSU is a business.  Like it or not.  We have to become one too or it’ll never get better.

This feels like 2015. Start slow. New QB, win everything in between, get smoked by Ohio state a week after they play like crap. So the multi million dollar question is how does UM get to the next level. Don’t know, but the offensive line is where Michigan is not close to elite yet. Not good enough in the trenches to be elite. Probably need a more explosive offensive philosophy to get there. Ohio state didn’t fear big plays and just teed off on everything today, as Michigan tried to be efficient and play ball control. Gotta fight fire with fire. Even Alabama realized it can’t hold good offenses down and now out scores other good teams.

Regarding YAC for WRs, it didn’t help today that Shea was not accurate.

Also, special teams run by Jay Harbaugh is a mess. Ambry Thomas should no longer receive kicks.

I thought we were potentially a great team.  Now, honestly, I'm just hoping we didn't beat a bunch of dumpster fires this year.

November 24th, 2018 at 6:58 PM ^

that is really long and i read it....

1.  we are not elite or sniffing elite (not debatable we don't beat the big boys so we aren't one)

2.  our offensive attack is not creative and doesn't adjust week to week or in game enough

3.  our defense is still getting owned by spread offenses (this was the complaint when we had lloyd); we were getting exploited and didn't adjust..... not an elite defense by any stretch.

4.  our offensive line is still a problem

5.  we returned a team full of upper classmen and didn't win (or even really sniff a win) in the two biggest games of the year.... assessment = failure.

6.  we are embarrassing.  we haven't been dug out of anything.

Michigan still has a shot at an 11 win season.  Today was horrible and it’s beyond old losing to OSU.  3 double digit win seasons in 4 Harbaugh coached years sure beats the hell out of our time with RR and Hoke.

Need to now take the next step.  Identify the deficiencies at both coaching and player levels, and make adjustments.

Im looking forward to the future.  Go Blue.

Disagree.  JH has Michigan firmly stationed as the 2nd best program in the Big Ten.  So we are way better off than in the RRod and Hoke years.

Agree that there is still a significant gap to regain the no. 1 spot in the Big Ten.

Progress, but short of the goal.

JH won't get to the goal unless EVERY YEAR he reevaluates and junks the stuff that is sub-optimal and replaces it with better coaches, concepts, best practices etc.

He did a good amount of that last off season.  He needs to do more of  it this off season.
