OT: Ian Book out for ND against FSU this week

Submitted by Salinger on November 8th, 2018 at 8:37 AM

According to Irish Daily:

The Irish will face another hurdle this weekend as starting quarterback Ian Book will be out for Saturday’s game against Florida State, according to multiple sources,

The 6-foot, 203-pounder suffered multiple injuries to his midsection during this past week's game at Northwestern, which will prevent him from playing in Saturday’s game.

The article goes on to say that he may be ready for Syracuse. B. Wimbush is the guy in the interim, as expected.

Notre Dame has looked, IMO, pretty decent under Ian Book, but they become a much more beatable team with Wimbush at the helm. His 55% completion rating, 1 passing TD and 4 INTs maybe open the door for a strange FSU upset?

FSU is bad though...

Thoughts?

If ND loses a game and UM, Alabama and Clemson win out, I think ND drops below a one-loss team that also wins out such as Oklahoma (first up), Washington State (second up) or WVU (third).

In any scenario, an ND loss is good for us at this point. They're gonna wish they were in a conference.

I think if ND loses, I would guess Oklahoma winning out would get #4.  The alternative to that would be putting Georgia (that just lost to Alabama in the SECCG) at the 4 spot to play Bama again which is a nightmare matchup for tv guys. I think OU and WV split...and lets not forget Bedlam is this weekend.

FSU may not be an issue for them but as others have noted, if he is out multiple games then it could get interesting for them.

FSU is weird. I haven't watched them this year. Is there just a lack of talent or has the coaching change really had that much of an effect on them?

Injuries suck and I'm hoping very hard that UM makes it to OSU in good shape.

I think the possibility of an ND loss without Book is actually more detrimental to the case for UM leapfrogging them.  Committee would look at the loss more favorably without their "starting" qb than if they got beat outright.

Why are people saying Syracuse is dangerous?

I admit I've only watched one game, vs WMU- where they seriously struggled (giving WMU 621 yards of offense) until the very end. We went on to decimate that same WMU team 49-3 the following week, and they only got their 200 yards offense in 4th quarter trash time.

Was it losing by only 3 to Clemson, beating UNC by 3, or getting beaten by 7 at the same Pitt team that lost to PSU 51-6? Yeah they've beaten some ACC teams and come close to some others, but that doesn't say anything other than the ACC is overrated this year, that and Clemson always has some dud games, every year.

ND could beat them handily. But Syracuse has, in two years, beaten Clemson and played them down to the last drive. They've won games. They aren't the disaster that USC is.

They are not, as someone has said, Indiana. They have performed more consistently than Purdue. They're more analogous to a Mike Leach team; not going to win a title, but they can do some damage every so often.

As a map expert, I can tell you that the Orlando Magic and Florida State University are relatively close and within the same state of the union.

Username somewhat checks out.

Or perhaps he's just a fan of magic in general, in which case do the saw-the-lady-in-half trick.

I could start at QB for ND this weekend and beat FSU.  But yeah, if Book is out going forward, they're in real trouble.  Syracuse is good, but not a world beating team - ND has more athletes, so a close game favors them (even if Wimbush starts).  USC, OTOH, has a sideline full of ridiculous athletic feats.  But they make up for that with shitastic coaching, so a tossup if Wimbush starts.

But for FSU Saturday, chalk up a ND win...

anything can happen but ND is a well coached team. I'll be rooting for the luck of the IRISH to be non existent for ND and bestowed upon FSU in an upset win.

Ian Book is better than Wimbush, but do we know how much better Book is? I have seen it on social media when people are comparing Michigan to Notre Dame after the CFP Rankings, and a lot of Notre Dame fans think they would have beat us worse if Book had been playing.

But the best defense Notre Dame has faced since Michigan is Northwestern (#32 on S&P+), and they lost half their secondary in that game. The rest of the defenses they have faced: 73, 93, 46 (Stanford), 81 (Virginia Tech), 87 (Pittsburgh), 121. Not exactly a murderer's row. The Ian Book hype train has been built off some mediocre to terrible defenses.

FSU (#39) and USC (#43) are left on their schedule so they don't have much left to challenge them either.

FSU still has wicked 4 and 5 star athletes that can make things happen if they are motivated and get their heads out of their asses.

They will be motivated.
