OT: Ian Book out for ND against FSU this week

Submitted by Salinger on November 8th, 2018 at 8:37 AM

According to Irish Daily:

The Irish will face another hurdle this weekend as starting quarterback Ian Book will be out for Saturday’s game against Florida State, according to multiple sources,

The 6-foot, 203-pounder suffered multiple injuries to his midsection during this past week's game at Northwestern, which will prevent him from playing in Saturday’s game.

The article goes on to say that he may be ready for Syracuse. B. Wimbush is the guy in the interim, as expected.

Notre Dame has looked, IMO, pretty decent under Ian Book, but they become a much more beatable team with Wimbush at the helm. His 55% completion rating, 1 passing TD and 4 INTs maybe open the door for a strange FSU upset?

FSU is bad though...

Thoughts?

FSU's O-line is still a disaster. Book being out will probably take this from being a 28-6 game to a 17-6 game. Cuse and USC will be more interesting

Dominant is a bit much. They're good, probably about as good as Iowa/Mississippi State but not quite Michigan State/Kentucky. ND's best defensive game of the season came against us and the mitigating circumstances there have been covered.

Losing Book brings their offense down to average and as discussed, their defense is solid but not DOMINANT.

ND will still win those jump balls, and a well rested Wimbush probably rattles off 50-60 yards on the ground to assist an already potent rushing attack.

27-10 ND.

Probably a weekend where you can get away with it.  FSU has looked like hot garbage multiple times this year, and ND has the type of defense to make it a long night for Francois (or whoever is the starter there anymore).

You might be right on both of your statements. Though Notre Dame wasn't very good with Wimbush and struggled to defeat Vanderbilt and Ball State with him as their starter. So it might be an issue.

I believe Notre Dame defeated Michigan mostly because our offense just wasn't ready to play a decent defense in first game of the season.

I really don’t think it matters. FSU is horrible defensively. And they won’t score more than 17 on the ND defense

My thoughts are that after McCaffery got injured I have become paranoid about injuries in the final two games before we play OSU.

Tell Patterson not to run much vs Rutgers and then pull him once we have a nice lead.

The last season FSU missed going to a bowl game was 1981, when they went 6-5. That has to be the longest streak in the nation.

Of course, that would have gotten them into some minor bowl today; if bowls were as numerous back then as they are now, the last time they would have missed a bowl was in Bowden's first season in 1976 when they went 5-6.

Per 247, recruiting class rankings for FSU and ND:

2014: FSU 4; ND 11

2015: FSU 3; ND 13

2016: FSU 3; ND 15

2017: FSU 6; ND 10

2018: FSU 11; ND 10

Assload of talent? Yes. Easily beat ND? No.

Everything on that FSU team is completely out of sorts. I'm guessing too that some guys have probably decided they're done with this season, after getting their asses whipped by Clemson and NC State. And in that situation, it doesn't matter how talented you are.

With Wimbush at QB, the game could stay somewhat close. But I have a lot of trouble seeing how in the hell FSU is going to move the ball on ND's defense.

With Wimbush in, this is closer to the ND that had one-score wins over BALL STATE and VANDERBILT (...sigh and Michigan sigh...).  FSU is hot garbage, so it probably won't matter. But if FSU can keep it close with their defense containing Wimbush...stranger things have happened, man.

FSU has no shortage of talent, but they are such a discombobulated team that I have a really hard time envisioning them winning this game. After the Clemson game, I'd bet some of those guys have just mailed it in for the rest of the season. Even if their defense played decently, which it can certainly do, their offense can't get anything done. And going on the road against a top-5 team with an extremely good defense....not going to happen unless ND turns the ball over several times deep in their own territory and FSU can find a way to convert.

This game feels like a 21-7 kind of game, where Wimbush keeps the score closer than it ought to be, but the end result is never really in doubt because outside of a few plays here and there, FSU can't move the ball.

Now, if Book is out next week too against Syracuse, then things get reeeeeally interesting.

Yeah...you'd expect the CFP chairman to know the names of the highest-profile position players of the contenders by this point.  Looked like he was reading from notes, too.  Glad this guy has a say in who makes the cut.  *eye roll*

FSU has a little of the feel of a powder keg. They are still very talented but Taggart hasn’t been able to piece it together. I think ND wins but it may be a little dicey. This is basically FSU’s super bowl right now.
