Fanbase reactions: 2 months later

Submitted by othernel on November 4th, 2018 at 6:12 PM

With this weekend's big win, the bandwagon is getting a little bit heavier. So I figured I'd take a look back at the post Notre Dame reactions to see how far we've come since that first week of the season, when the fanbase was in a "different" state of mind about the program.

Hopefully the current era of good feelings lasts well past OSU and into a potential Big Ten title.

I can also honestly say I have never once questioned Harbaugh being the best man for this job. I predicted 10-2 after ND with the other loss to be @OSU.

I actually stopped posting in the game threads after either Maryland or SMU.. can't remember what game but I can remember the comment that pissed me off so much I was done with them. "Harbaugh has killed my Michigan fanhood"  That was when I decided game threads are too annoying

After most preseason predictions said we would lose approximately 3 games, I posted that we would have 1 loss, 2 max and that this season felt like the coming together all at once year.

All i have at this point is pure joy. We are winning the right way and everyone is hating on us, because damn it feels good to be a Michigan Wolverine!

I think it is hard in college football fan circles for some to see the long game because of the emotional investment we have in teams - it's not just a Michigan problem either. As we sometimes note in "The State Of Our Open Threads", a lot of comments made in the moment will seem idiotic only weeks later if the season goes otherwise well, and while I do what I do to shame those people a bit (I have no problem with shaming people - I am a nice person like that), it was decidedly more difficult after the ND game to have confidence that this particular month of the season from Wisconsin to now would go well. College football is funny like that.

I don’t think it was hard to see this team improving. I repeatedly stated: we lost a close game on the road to a team that won a New Year’s Day Bowl last year. We were breaking in a new QB.

Fans are petulant, but that’s no reason to excuse them. This is year 4 and people still question why Harbaugh is a run-heavy guy.

People need to work on developing a long view or they’re just consistently masochistic. Instead of doubting, how about the questions be earnest to learn and be respectful as to why Harbaugh does what he does?

Sad to say some of those could have been written by me in my drunken and angered state during that game. This forum is great for venting.

I thought we’d go 9-3 with a loss to ND, one of Wisconsin, MSU and PSU and one to OSU. One came true, one did not and one remains to be seen.

But we are no doubt much better than I thought we’d be.

I'll toot my own horn...I've never wavered on Harbaugh. From day 1 I thought he was elite, and I have been bashing the unfair narrative written around him the first 3 years. Should be at worst 3-1 against MSU and 1-2 against OSU, and every game except PSU last year and OSU 2015 were close.

Harbaugh is elite...anybody who knows football knows that he is an exceptional identifier of talent, in players and coaches.  Nobody is perfect, but after RR and Hoke, the idiocy and irrationality of this board had jumped the shark.

I also called the Urban Meyer breakdown, although I thought it would occur in year 3 of Harbaugh.  If not for the QB injuries, it very well may have...but Meyer builds castles of sand....lies and shortcuts.

Hey, I put good money on Michigan to cover against ND. I put my money on them bc I believed in the team. We had flaws and it worried me after the game but I always believed our D would be elite and thought Shea would grow into a QB that would be our best since Henne. I still think so.

And for the record before the season I predicted 12-1 with our only loss to NW. Damn close.  But I did think we’d be left out of the CFP bc of a weak loss. Looking to be wrong in that one, thankfully.

If all of OSU, PSU, MSU, Wisky (& ND)had lived up to their pre-season expectations and had we beat them all but lost to a fringe/just outside Top 25 NW, I would think we'd almost surely be in the CFP just about every year.

It's a pet peeve of mine, but I don't like evaluating an entirety of the season between two one-loss teams based solely on the opponents in those losses.

Right after the ND game, someone told me they wanted what I was smoking when I said Michigan v. Notre Dame rematch in the CFP.  I believed it then and I think it could still happen.

i actually think we match up better with Book than Wimbush.  Their lines were incredible at the time.  Still very good but the Bars injury hurts them.  They certainly could lose before the CFP.

i believed in the Michigan D even with that bad start.  I probably thought too highly of the Michigan offense at that time but the improvement has been significant.

Thanks for sharing this.  I think the most glaring are some of the high profile folks in the media, like Braylon Edwards. He trashed the players and hurt his career.

Years of pent up frustration, so I understand. The feelings are a product of the overall last decade or so of play.

Glad to turn the corner.

I didnt care for the ND loss because I was more concerned about beating msu and osu and winning the big ten than making the playoffs. The loss to ND didn’t change my outlook on the season but it’s understandable why people overreacted that game was a shit show. Some comments are just stupid but it’s in the heat of the moment. This team is the real deal and the oline is why people are believing. My biggest problem was we would run all over the crappy teams but against a team with a pulse we couldn’t run to save our lives. That is clearly not the case this season. Can’t wait until November 24!

I was pretty pissed after ND. Not because Michigan lost, but because I believed and still do that Michigan was the better team.

That being said maybe Michigan needed to lose that game. Who knows?

definitely exceeded my expections.. i figured 9-3 and stuck with it, with an outside chance at 10-2... the latter i discounted following the NW game... after Wisky tho, i believed that the offense was progressing in a direction i wasn't expecting...

Warriner is a god... no way did i think this line would be this good after ND... i thought they'd get to a mid grade B1G team... the OLine looks like one of the top units in the league, which is a stunning reversal of fortune.

I said we would win the next 10 and be playing for a BIG 10 title in Columbus after that game. But I'd be lying if I didn't admit that wasn't mostly hope and wishes. No way did I see these 3 beatdowns coming. 2 more to go then get the Buckeyes and it'll be the happiest anniversary ever.

But I will say that the Nd game was bad. Lots of expectations and Michigan looked  average at best. I am sure a lot of people had some alcohol flowing through the veins and brain.

I usually have to go to RCMB or Black Shoe Diaries for my schadenfreude.  Weird to get a dose of it here.  But man, the view from the mountaintop is so sweet after looking up from the valley for too long.

Michigan has Jim Harbaugh coaching its football team and John Beilein coaching its basketball team.  That may be the best football/basketball coaching duo in the country.  And still we have tried desperately to run them out of town, for the unpardonable sin of occasionally losing a game.

The internet really does make us all dumber.

I overreacted.  Never wanted Jim fired but was over the season after ND. Thought they were a year away (again). I did not see the O line improving like this.  Also, makes me a little sad Drevno was kept as long as he was.  Last year was a wash with the QB but 2016 with even a 1% better O line and that would have been a CFP team easily.  This O-line gets a 1st down at Iowa.  Oh well, going to enjoy this run and not worry about what ifs.

First games rarely define the arc of the season.  I was disappointed as all hell, but there were too many games yet to play to jump off the ledge.  After we won the Northwestern game, that was a sign (to me at least) that this team is different and would gain confidence and momentum from overcoming adversity.  They seem very confident these days.

not many talk about this.  But with McElwain in one of his interviews after a few games he said and I'm paraphrasing "our receivers just don't drop the ball."

And that's the one thing I noticed this year. The receiving corps hasn't dropped the ball.  They're just steady.  And it's a far cry from last year with all the talk about no touchdown receptions for a year with those guys.
