Fanbase reactions: 2 months later

Submitted by othernel on November 4th, 2018 at 6:12 PM

With this weekend's big win, the bandwagon is getting a little bit heavier. So I figured I'd take a look back at the post Notre Dame reactions to see how far we've come since that first week of the season, when the fanbase was in a "different" state of mind about the program.

Hopefully the current era of good feelings lasts well past OSU and into a potential Big Ten title.

I’ve asked this question as I never read other sports fan blog ... do other fans seem to have a perverse obsession with pessimism as posters on MGBlog.

The ND and NW games were pretty much the same — undeveloped offense for Michigan and a few scripted plays by the opposing team.  Waivering is normal, but so many get so irrational.  To me, it seems the ND and NW experiences have had a profound effect on this team.  Add in the humiliations of last year, the Revenge Tour, and this team is playing it’s best, most motivated, most disciplined football at the absolute correct time.

What more can we ask for?

I was definitely dismayed after the notre dame loss. I said something to the effect that he didn't look right on here and I said worse to my friends and family. I'm glad I was wrong. I took my daughter to her first Michigan game and I'm so happy it was to see this magical group of young men. She has become a follower of the maize and blue forever.

The thing to remember is that although we're riding high now, we still could come up short of the CFP and Conference Championship.  Going to Columbus to play OSU for the right to go to Indianapolis will be a tall order, regardless of how bad the Buckeyes are looking.  Make no mistake, all the naysayers who were flooding this board with their "Fire Harbaugh" diatribes back in September are out there, waiting for this team to come up short.

That said, I like the idea of a mea culpa call-out thread; holding these folks accountable for overreacting and trolling.  I will admit to be a little chapped at these guys dismissing my optimism as being a "homer" and "fanboy" all while calling for Harbaugh's head without offering the better alternative.

I think I was on this list? I'm not sure. I was drunk by that point and consumed by the BPONE. I had built myself up for massive expectations and was extremely underwhelmed with what we saw on opening night. I'll very happily admit I was wrong at this point, and the turnaround that has transpired since then is massively impressive. With that said, I disagree with the pseudo witch hunt mentality of gauging others' fandom by what record was predicted, or how much "faith" you had. You won't find a bigger fan than me, but sometimes people stay stupid things (myself obviously included) after a tough loss, especially when they are emotionally invested.

Unless, of course, I'm not on that list. In which case, tar and feather that buffoon.

I get wanting to rub people's noses in it if you're one who never stopped believing. But I don't think it's fair to trash people for their reactions in the immediate aftermath of the ND loss, because it was exactly what a lot of people had come to expect: sure this team will beat the SMUs of the world, but a road game against a team with a pulse can be written off. I'm thrilled about this season and the main reason for that is even if Michigan was on track for 8-4 right now I wouldn't want Harbaugh fired because I remember what happened last time Michigan fans simply wanted the coach fired, successor be damned, and the resulting RR/Hoke tailspin. Barring galactic craziness I think this job is safely Jim's until he doesn't want it anymore, thanks to this season.
