I would guess it is more likely Marcus is just trying to draw attention to himself, or define his brand. Whatever, calling a 5-3 Purdue team that lost to EMU the best team in the big ten is pretty absurd. But it did get him a lot of attention.

Well I don't agree that 1997 was the only relevant team in recent memory. That's significant disrespekt for many other good team including 2006 and 2016 that were pretty darn impressive. If you said championship, then yes.

The whole "Carr-era" thing seems overblown to me. Other than Braylon Edwards and Marcus Ray, how many of the 1,000-odd players Lloyd coached have been issuing hot takes?
It seems to me that the vast majority have been respectful. Why do they all need to get tarnished for the actions of a small handful?

RichRod was a piece of work, but some Lloyd players (like Eric Mayes) were hostile to him out of the gate.

There were a lot of former players who gave RichRod a hard time right away. He was the person who followed Carr, he made a lot of changes really fast, he was different, he wasn't a "Michigan Man", and he did a few things to put his foot in his mouth early.
As great as Carr was for the program and as amazing as 1997 was (my senior year), it wasn't like he was Nick Saban. They were known as much for underachieving as they were for kicking John Cooper's ass at OSU.

I was at that game with my fiancee (now wife) for her first Michigan game. She married me because I kept my cool despite being really upset. That said, I'd argue that almost any of Rich Rod's losses in the 3-9 season were as embarrassing, but they all ended up blending together. Loss to 5-7 Illinois or 3-9 Toledo?! How about 4-8 Purdue? App State was actually a really good team that year. Rich Rod couldn't beat anybody, except a 7-6 Wisconsin team that couldn't beat anybody with a pulse.

Pre season #5 losing to an FCS school, even though they were 2 time defending champs, trumps a team with little to no talent losing a bunch a games.

I would say some of his wins were just as bad as his losses. Sure, it was cool to put up a bunch of points, but if you can't stop from being scored on, what's the point? Those were very dark years.

He did t have the same athletes at his disposal as the guys who lost to App State. Think of the make of that team compared to RR year 1.....the gap is akin to the Grand Canyon.

I was in Tampa at a football party with Florida and FSU grads wearing M colors. Imagine my embarrassment. I was talking trash all afternoon about overratted SEC and Michigan goes down to APP state. Needless to say, it changed my perspective about B1G football real quick. B1G football is an elite conference now. Back then, if you lined up SEC vs B1G from top to bottom, it would have probably ended up 80% win pct SEC. Today? Probably 60% win pct one conference or the other other depending on year. SEC and B1G are the two best conferences in football.

Knowing what we know now about RR, maybe people had a reason to be hostile towards him right off the bat?
I heard first hand stories about his boozing within 6 months of him being in Ann Arbor. Maybe his recreational activities were more well known among other coaches, and just kept quiet?

I remember a couple of players really chirping about recruiting, stuff about you RR was afraid to recruit in the "hood" or something to that effect. It was all the Carr-era guys believing the spread offense was a gimmick and questioning toughness.

Add Amani Toomer to that list. For some reason the Lloyd era players really seem to think they know everything that's right for the program, despite losing 3 games nearly every year minus three seasons.

I think the vast majority of Carr-era players are on board. Woodson, Jansen, etc. Heck, Chris Hutchinson and John Runyan's (granted, he was a Moeller guy) sons both play on the team. So I think most football alums are pretty happy right now. Marcus Ray and Braylon Edwards seem to be the only miserable SOBs.

This can't be stated enough - Jones was fired then immediately goes to work against his own former players. I really hoped Hoke would work out when he was hired, but it didn't happen. To his credit, he still seems to love this place and the players.

Yes, well, Brady, is alive and well working for the Carolina Panthers and this week coaching against Jim's brother. But guess what, he is coaching on the same team as Ron Rivera, a teammate of Jim Harbaugh with the Bears and with players that he coached at Michigan. I will tell you this, in the coaching business, everyone is a friend and a potential colleague.
