What exactly is Marcus Ray’s problem?

I won’t link but apparently he is again ripping on Michigan on Rico Beards show. Is there a story to why he turned on UM? Does he share a bond with Rico because they are both overweight radio hacks now?

never cared that much for carr. he should have been a lifetime asst. coach somewhere. he didn't move the program foward, and like alot of coaches across the country made a name with one great season. other wise he had alot of average seasons and really let recruiting slip towards the end.

He won our only national title in the last 70 years.  He also won 75% of his games over 13 seasons.  To say he "should have been a lifetime assistant coach" when he's in the CFB Hall of Fame as a head coach is a reach.

If he didn't like RichRod, it was probably because Rich is a shitty human being (fired from AZ for sexual harassment).  I don't see the point in piling on him.  Is he supposed to monitor everything Marcus Ray says now?

Bitterness re: a lot of things. That's causing him to eat his feelings. His weight gain is causing him to hate himself. That's increasing his bitterness. Rinse. Repeat.

He's in a vicious cycle of self-hate.

I guess I don't know who you are specifically referencing, but a lot of former players go through something like this, although I think Marcus is going through a very Michigan-specific version of it.

Player's career ends (either after college by not getting drafted or signed, or after some years in the league and not getting resigned). Player doesn't believe their playing days should be over - player feels bad. Player gains weight because they still eat like a 25 year old pro football player but they are a 30 year old lay person now. Player tries to make it coaching/broadcasting, but this is a highly competitive industry as well and it doesn't always work out. Now player is not a player and not getting traction in football-adjacent industry and overweight, so they really feel bad. They don't change eating habits, which adds to depression. Now they are bitter, overweight, depressed 45 year old with failing health.

Pretty dark, sorry. Marcus is basically just on that cycle but he's specifically bitter about 1. being a highly rated recruit, but having a shorter NFL career than his 1997 teammates (Woodson, Griese, etc.), 2. Not being able to get into broadcasting as well as some of his former teammates have (Woodson, Griese, Jansen, etc.), 3. Not being able to get a coaching job at Michigan.

Pretty much.  Ever since the Rays Of Light book self-promotion he was doing (how ironic is that?), his attitude has been getting worse and worse - for whatever reason.  In the last months of his time with Jamie on the WTKA afternoon show, he was getting intolerable to listen to.  And now, it sounds like he's sunk into a whole new well of bitterness.  It's probably a combination of things I'm guessing.  The assistant coach gig that never happened is probably a core cause.  But he should probably get some counseling or go to some motivational seminars to try and exorcise his anger and bitterness before it consumes him.

It's weird because he was so humble when he first came back to this market.

You can tell he was at rock bottom because when he finally started making money again, his shitty attitude that got him fired from all of his other jobs resurfaced. He is a textbook borderline personality disorder case.

I think his major malfunction now is he thinks he knows everything about the game. Therefore, he thinks he knows more about defense than Don Brown. He's one of those people who can't admit when he is wrong even when you have him dead to rights. He is the black Mike Valenti.

Honestly ... I sincerely doubt that he's behaving this way 100% authentically. My multi-year suspicion, watching him guest comment on BTN, is that his career was on the rocks because he was *way* too much of a homer during the Hoke years.

I think he's just over-correcting. And while that contributes to how little I value his speech, I neither like nor dislike him. I just don't care.

Exactly. Which only makes him severely wrong again. Except now it's in the opposite way.

And since his credibility with non-Michigan fans was already toast, this philosophy change is fully self-defeating. Because he's never going to get that outsider audience back. They gone.

Yup. Quit listening to him a couple years ago during his 'Rays Of Light' segments with Sam and Ira. He always came off negative towards the program and very know-it-all-y. Then he started sounding like my MSU-alum brother; as in going out of his way to find and point out wrong stuff about Michigan. This bothered me, but at first I thought maybe, as someone who'd been around the game a lot more I was, he knew something I didn't. But when he started criticizing Don Brown and down-playing his success with the defense, I knew he was full of shit and maybe bitter or something. So I simply tuned him out.

He’s always been critical of Michigan because they haven’t been as good as Carr era teams (same as what Braylon does). But when Michigan has performed well he basically doubles down on his hawt takes and doesn’t give them credit. He also hates Michigan fans essentially and prides himself for coming out of Columbus. After last weekend he put Purdue above Michigan for the best team in the big ten which is a hawt take for sure.

He’s just out there pandering to whoever will give him some airtime.  At least Braylon has had the good sense to SFTU after his ND comments (which I’m surprised he has).  Marcus just keeps digging the hole deeper.  He’s universally hated my Michigan fans now.  It takes a lot to be this hated and have won a National Title with Michigan.  It’s almost amazing what he’s accomplished.

If you recall, there was definitely a tone of entitlement surrounding the Lloyd Carr era. This plagued the program later in his career and was very much evident during the Brady hoke years. Marcus ray is exactly that. He is an in titled know-it-all who only has his playing days to fall back on when people challenge his opinions.
