Is there a chance of a Shea return?
Let me preface this by saying that I’m one of many here that thought Shea would be a one and done at Michigan. I didn’t think there was any chance of two years of him here. That being said, I’ve been looking at some of the updates mocks out there and it appears that Shea may have been jumped in the projected draft rankings. I’ve recently seen him as high as the 4th QB taken but as low as the 6th QB taken. I can’t help but wonder, if those rankings hold true, would it be in Shea’s best interest to return for his last year of eligibility?
Some pros of a return:
- an offensive line that should remain intact up the middle with a high likelihood of improvement at the tackle spots (do I dare say a potential strength of the team, gulp)
- super talented and experienced weapons on the outside could lead to gawdy numbers
- a big time RB recruit coming in with Charbonnete
- an additional year under Harbaugh (regardless of what some think of him it’s definitely a positive from an NFL perspective)
- potential to be the 1st QB taken with a big year
I'm not saying I’d be at all surprised if Shea went pro. What I’m saying is that when he announced he was coming to Michigan I would have put the chances of him going pro at about 95%. After looking at how everything is shaking out, albeit relatively early yet, I think it’s closer to 60-40 that he goes pro.
What do do you guys think, do we have any shot at 2 years of Shea?

Where would he go? Thinking he might want to get that degree. Haven't seen a thing that says to me that he'll ever play on Sundays.
Receivers wait for days for the ball to get there on long passes and he stares down his receiver on most every play. And this is not against elite defenses.
Not impressed so far. Actually very disappointed. Maybe most of it is because the offensive line is so weak. Thought Dylan looked confident and poised in the short amount of time he's played. I see him as the QB of the future.

Was it the drugs you took or were you just watching a different game last Saturday?

Saying that DCaf looks better than Shae based on what we’ve seen this season is one of those things that will make me never take a poster seriously again this season.
September 18th, 2018 at 9:16 PM ^
This was the typical fan in the Lloyd Carr era, the backup was always better than the starter. I am excited about Dcaf but Shea is the man right now.
September 18th, 2018 at 9:32 PM ^
Hey, are you the old man who was sitting in front of me at the game and screamed to put McCaffrey in after Shea’s first pass?
September 18th, 2018 at 11:52 PM ^
Jesus, what a fucking curmudgeon you are. Not much that makes you happy is there.
Kids played pretty damn good but don’t let facts and statistics get in the way of a good bitch fest.

Shea on KR or PR? Not in a million years.
...
Oh! Nvm.
September 18th, 2018 at 4:39 PM ^
Hey. Do you guys think Cade McNamara will stay for four years?
September 18th, 2018 at 5:03 PM ^
Mock drafts have him going 5th overall to the Packers after the 2021 season so I doubt it.
September 18th, 2018 at 5:03 PM ^
I'm hearing speculation that he's going to transfer.
September 18th, 2018 at 4:40 PM ^
I would say it depends on how the bigger games go. He wasnt able to show anything against Notre Dame.
I have also heard/read that this is a down QB year which could be looked as a reason for Shea to leave. I dont know what next year looks like. At the same time it doesnt matter where you rank among QBs in your draft class. It matters what round you are graded for.
I think there is a chance he could return but we will not know til January at the earliest. Im hoping for one and done because that would mean positive results on the field.

20 attempts and 200yds a game aren't exactly the flashy non-conference numbers the other 2019 draft favorites are putting up.
Remember, Patterson even appeared on a few Heisman watch lists in the pre-season.
I think the pre-season draft and Heisman talk stemmed from the idea that everyone thought Patterson would get more opportunities to spin the ball each game.
September 18th, 2018 at 5:45 PM ^
NFL doesn't care about quantity as much quality. Not his fault if the offense is run first. If he throws great on those 20 attempts and especially if he's throwing for 10 yards an attempt, that's enough for them to make an evaluation.
Matt Cassel was drafted and threw a total of 33 passes in all four years at USC! That boggles the mind but there's a reason the big number guys in flashy offenses usually DON'T get drafted highest.

I’m not sure why so many people seem to be butt hurt about a non hot takey discussion item on a message board that’s meant for, you know, discussions.
Whatever I guess they can just hang tight for thread #78 on how the tackles stink.
September 18th, 2018 at 4:50 PM ^
One thing I've noticed about Shea is there's no way he's 6'2
September 18th, 2018 at 5:45 PM ^
He looks 5’11” to me.
September 18th, 2018 at 4:54 PM ^
Not sure why anyone thought he would leave.
September 18th, 2018 at 4:55 PM ^
He has an extremely high ceiling, and the offense is improving. Of he doesn't reach his ceiling and had the potential to be the #1 qb then I would stay if I were him. The contract difference between 6th qb and 1St pick overall are worth the year.
September 18th, 2018 at 5:04 PM ^
Who knows? But the reality is that he won't put up some kind of dazzling numbers in a run first offense that looks outdated even by NFL standards.
September 18th, 2018 at 5:06 PM ^
From what I've seen, I'd put it at 85% chance of leaving. Don't get your hopes up.
September 18th, 2018 at 5:07 PM ^
This headline scared me - I thought he was injured.
September 18th, 2018 at 5:08 PM ^
I would like that very much. But if he’s a projected 1st rounder this year he’s gone.
But he may stay so he can play on the same team as his brother perhaps.
September 18th, 2018 at 5:14 PM ^
Wow, this might be a new low for the board. Not talking about the OP. That's actually a fine and relevant question. I'm talking about 90% of the responses in this thread. I mean jesus, the guy is just getting an (on-topic) convo going, not speculating doom and gloom this season or trying to "suck the joy" out of anything. What's the point about asking this question at this time? Well, the same as asking any question any time. This is a message board to discuss things.
So, aside from addressing the a-hole responses, I personally don't think we have any shot at holding onto Shea for 2 years. Even if he were to get injured (god forbid) or have a mediocre season, I still think he's going to declare. The guy transferred to Michigan to play and get into the pros. I don't think, and this is just my opinion, he's fully on the "Team Michigan" bus. He signed with 'Ole Miss and is coming here toward the end of his college career to just get playing time exposure and get taught by Harbaugh. I don't think any loyalty to Michigan will play a factor.
September 18th, 2018 at 5:15 PM ^
He butter.
September 18th, 2018 at 5:42 PM ^
So if we turn him loose this year on the field he might turn himself loose after the season?
I didn't realize Shea was under so many yokes.
September 18th, 2018 at 5:46 PM ^
I wouldn't be surprised if the only early-eligible player that leaves after this season is Gary. Bush could leave early, but heck, you could make a case where all starters with eligibility remaining stay for 2019
September 18th, 2018 at 6:23 PM ^
I actually agree with this. I've never understood why players leave early unless they are first or early second round locks. I imagine we're going to lose a couple to the draft but I have a hard time believing that Patterson, Gary, Bush, Hudson, Hill and Long are all early entrants. Makes no sense unless you're an early round pick and we aren't having 5-6 first or second round picks in the 19 draft. No chance.
September 18th, 2018 at 6:07 PM ^
It would be great if he did, but then again, I am bullish on DCaf. So, I think we will be fine at QB next year.
I'd rather see Bush or Gary stay another year. Not going to happen, but one can dream.
September 18th, 2018 at 6:16 PM ^
When I read the title I thought I must have missed injury news or something. Don't scare me like that.
September 18th, 2018 at 6:33 PM ^
Keep in mind I do not have a PhD in football.
I don't see a first round talent out there when I watch him. I just don't.
Therefore, he should return!
September 18th, 2018 at 6:45 PM ^
He needs another year to be ready for the NFL, just not ready now
September 18th, 2018 at 6:54 PM ^
I think he'd be better served coming back for another year of development. Although, one of the major determinants I think will be his height, or lack thereof in the NFL. I think based on what I've seen he has adequate arm strength and adequate decision making, but not elite. So, it would make sense to come back. But I never got the impression he wanted to stay more than a year, but that may have come from UM people. I'm not sure I ever heard him say that.
If I look at the offensive side of the ball I think the team that returns next season looks pretty good. He should be able to put up impressive numbers. We lose Higdon, but return Evans and also bring in Charbonnet, who looks college ready. I think Hudson will be an upgrade over JBB. I expect Gentry to return. And, I think Black, DPJ, Collins, and Martin in year 3 will be better than them in year 2. We lose Perry, but get Black back. I say that's an upgrade.
However if you look at the defensive side of the ball we have the potential to lose a lot. Gary is almost certainly gone. Winovich and Kinnell is graduates. We can replace Kinnell and one of the two DEs OK, but I think we really miss Gary. Then it all comes down to what happens with Hudson, Bush, Hill, and Long. If they all come back we'll be fine. If they all go we will have a significant drop off defensively.
I think it's likely we have a similar record as the schedule is basically the same as this year, swapping home and away. We get OSU, MSU, and ND at home. Then we travel to Wiscy & PSU and swap out Nebraska for Iowa for the cross division game, but get them at home. Sounds like another 8-4 or 9-3 type of season depending on which juniors return.
September 18th, 2018 at 6:56 PM ^
I think that for quarterbacks especially, it is beginning to look like the NBA math. It’s not so much about the value of the rookie deal as much as it is about getting a year closer to your 2nd contract which, for QB’s is what, $20M a year?
September 18th, 2018 at 6:56 PM ^
Is there a chance Tarik Black returns this season?? Anybody hear anything
September 18th, 2018 at 7:27 PM ^
As many of you know, I've said it before and I'll say it again. This could be a great year yet but next year boys... This team is going to be ready to smear teams. Shea comes back? Shit kids, it's fucking over.
September 18th, 2018 at 9:10 PM ^
I'm still really hyped for this year especially how we saw how vulnerable Wisconsin, MSU and Penn State have looked in games this year if those teams think App State, Arizona State, Utah State and BYU had them figured out wait till they get to big 10 play. However next year may be one of the most talented teams in a long time.
September 18th, 2018 at 9:40 PM ^
It’s ALWAYS next year..
September 18th, 2018 at 7:36 PM ^
I don’t know. I’d just like to see some more 3 & 4 wide on Saturday.
September 18th, 2018 at 7:37 PM ^
It depends how he performs against the good teams. Lets wait and see
September 18th, 2018 at 7:56 PM ^
I could see him returning for another year of polish and home games against rivals
September 18th, 2018 at 8:33 PM ^
I think he likely was hoping or even expecting to light the world on fire and be gone after a year, but if he’s a late round kinda guy I could easily see Harbz convincing him to stay another year to help that draft stock. It’s not easy to be a top 2 rounds QB.
September 18th, 2018 at 9:00 PM ^
If Shea ends up as one of the top 2 ranked QB's in the B1G this season then I think he goes pro. Otherwise it's a toss-up. But like others have said I am just enjoying the ride this season.
September 18th, 2018 at 9:02 PM ^
Yes, but maybe not
September 18th, 2018 at 9:06 PM ^
I can see it but I dont want too. If he stays there is a possibility we lose one of QB to a transfer. I want there to be a legit big qb battle next year between Milton, Mccaffrey and Peters. I would hate for one of them to lose that opportunity. In reality I just want the likelihood of Milton being the starter speed up a year or two

There is a chance we could all find $50 on the street. There is a chance I could have sex with Sara Jean Underwood. There is a chance we find intelligent life from another planet.
There is a chance for Shea to return.
There is a chance just about anything could happen.
