More importantly, will Martinez play? If not, could be ugly.
September 10th, 2018 at 11:43 AM ^
even if he does, there’s no way he makes it through the entire game.
September 10th, 2018 at 11:58 AM ^
I'm puzzled why you would think that. Did the ND game convince you that Michigan will not have an issue with a mobile quarterback?
September 10th, 2018 at 12:19 PM ^
It was in the preview article so ppl may have missed it but the brief FFF section on ND shows them having top 250 recruits at every o-line position and 2 of them were also dangermen. Doubt NE or any team other than osu and Wisconsin have lines that good.
September 10th, 2018 at 12:23 PM ^
i’m puzzled that you’re puzzled. frost’s offense requires the qb to run alot. the qb didn’t make it through a game against colorado, with athletes that don’t even hold a candle to bush, gary, winovich, hudson and crew.
plus, the qb is 18 without much college-level strength and conditioning, not to mention the fact that he’s much smaller (and from what little i’ve seen, slower) than wimbush.
and nd’s oline is way better than nebraska’s
September 10th, 2018 at 1:09 PM ^
I'm puzzled that you're puzzled about being puzzled.
September 10th, 2018 at 1:14 PM ^
The whole thing is puzzling
September 10th, 2018 at 4:03 PM ^
Actually, the Colorado DB is starting for the Cowboys over Jourdain Lewis. Let’s not act like Colorado doesn’t have some good athletes. Their defense is solid—and don’t pretend that mobile QBs have not been the bane of our existence for a long time. Lewerke, Barrett, McSoreley—they hurt us with their mobility and running. Wimbush did the same in game one—until we adjusted. But Don Brown ha yet has his team come out against a premier running QB and shut them down for all four quarters. He’s not even had a game where he’s kept them from being non-factors. So...having athletes are small part of equation.
September 11th, 2018 at 9:59 PM ^
so your argument is that cu’s players are just as good as gary, bush, winovich, etc. because a guy who played on their team three years ago plays corner over jordan lewis in the nfl? that’s a pretty dumb take
September 10th, 2018 at 12:31 PM ^
It's not about having an issue defending a mobile QB. It's about the fact that he was getting beat up by Colorado and had to leave the game. He's going to take a lot more hits vs. us if they're running him all the time and thus is unlikely to make it to the end of the game
September 10th, 2018 at 12:45 PM ^
This defense won’t have trouble with mobile QB unless the opponents has some big receivers and an elite OL.
September 10th, 2018 at 12:35 PM ^
Michigan had one sack against WMU. We aren't quite lighting up quarterbacks like we were last year.
September 10th, 2018 at 12:47 PM ^
The box score I’m looking at right now says we had 2 with 8 TFL.
Plus I think Martinez will probably be running a bit more than Wassink did.
September 10th, 2018 at 1:10 PM ^
Did you watch the game? WMU ran a ton and had max protect on a lot of their throws. Winovich noted that in his post game comments.
September 10th, 2018 at 1:31 PM ^
Agreed. Wasn't their entire game plan built specifically to avoid QB sacks?
I also vaguely recall a team last year doing the same thing. Basically give up any semblance of offense so at least they can say they didn't get sacked that much
September 10th, 2018 at 11:22 AM ^
This pleases me. Go Blue!!!
September 10th, 2018 at 11:22 AM ^
Whaaaaat I thought it was going to be 3:30 or possibly even a night game.
September 10th, 2018 at 11:29 AM ^
I remember back in August that there was quite a bit of discussion about how we were eligible for up to two night games and Nebraska, Penn State and Wisconsin were the lot from which we would likely choose. I guess we know which one is not the answer now.
September 10th, 2018 at 11:36 AM ^
Just 1 night game this year. Only allowed 3 in 2 years and last year we had 2
September 10th, 2018 at 11:47 AM ^
And Penn State is in November. I think November games are off the table for being night games.
September 10th, 2018 at 12:07 PM ^
Tell that to Iowa in 2016...
September 10th, 2018 at 12:22 PM ^
Minnesota was a night game last year.
September 10th, 2018 at 12:30 PM ^
That was due to weather delay, so I’m not sure that counts.
September 10th, 2018 at 12:35 PM ^
The game was a night game regardless, and also had a weather delay. Kickoff was scheduled for 7:30 pm, and that got delayed an hour or so.
September 10th, 2018 at 1:39 PM ^
That’s right, I really flupped that up. Strangely enough I was even at that game. I was in the tail gate during the rain delay watching Iowa destroy OSU, and MSU getting lucky against PSU.
September 10th, 2018 at 12:56 PM ^
For the millionth time, this is false.
September 10th, 2018 at 1:04 PM ^
Only after the first weekend and then both teams have to agree.
September 10th, 2018 at 11:51 AM ^
That three number is a minimum, not a maximum.
September 10th, 2018 at 12:47 PM ^
Yeah, but everything over 3 is at discretion of the AD and they will not willingly take another.
September 10th, 2018 at 1:12 PM ^
That's the minimum for this year. Technically there is no maximum.
Though, if there was going to be a second one, Michigan's AD would have the right to refuse.
September 10th, 2018 at 11:38 AM ^
I think the game in East Lansing might be a night game as well. Unless they are 2-4 going into that game.
September 10th, 2018 at 11:24 AM ^
Murder at noon, then.
September 10th, 2018 at 11:25 AM ^
Also on FS1
September 10th, 2018 at 11:27 AM ^
Son of a ... this was supposed to be a night game or at least 3:30 -- noon is an awful choice.
September 10th, 2018 at 11:32 AM ^
Unfortunately, I think it's become clear that the only way we're going to get night games now is if we're forced to by the network ala last year.
September 10th, 2018 at 11:35 AM ^
Right -- I just thought they were almost assuredly going to pick it -- hmm... maybe has to do with Nebraska on Saturday.
September 10th, 2018 at 1:37 PM ^
I was certain it was going to be a night game and then Nebraska upped and lost to Colorado and lost their starting (and only scholarship) QB to boot. Once that happened, I assumed there was little chance of a night game
September 10th, 2018 at 11:49 AM ^
It's a sad day to finally accept the realization that the combo of Warde Manual and Jim MF'n Harbaugh will conspire to keep us as far away from night games as they possibly can.
September 10th, 2018 at 11:57 AM ^
Should do away games early, night games here so the team can not seem so unprepared for the playoffs /conference tourney /bowl games.
September 10th, 2018 at 11:58 AM ^
I think Michigan was still pretty squeamish pre-Harbaugh and Manuel, though. Because it's not like we had a ton of night games the four seasons prior either. Even after how successful UTL was in 2011, there was no night games the following year.
2016 Wisconsin was a night game....until it wasn't with no explanation. I went to that game and the atmosphere was incredible. It being a night game would have been epic.
September 10th, 2018 at 3:23 PM ^
Night games are fun to be at but pose logistical issues for a lot of fans. I think it's reasonable to keep them relatively rare.
September 10th, 2018 at 1:00 PM ^
This is what happens when both teams lay eggs early on. If they were both undefeated, the game would be at night.
September 10th, 2018 at 12:32 PM ^
I love a Noon game.
September 10th, 2018 at 11:28 AM ^
IMO we're not going to learn much about how good or bad we really are for the next month or so. I think we're going to crush a very bad SMU team, beat soundly a less than stellar (with our without Martinez) Nebraska, beat Northwestern and then beat the shit out of Maryland.
So going into the three games of Wisconsin, MSU & PSU we'll be 5-1 and prolly ranked just outside of the top 10. Win all three of those games and then we will have a legitimate shot at something great this year. But let's be honest with ourselves - we're not going know what we've really got until the Wisky, MSU & PSU stretch of games.
September 10th, 2018 at 11:31 AM ^
FYI, sounds like Martinez is going to be fine. Showed up to a charity event yesterday in just a sleeve and Frost says he's encouraged. Will be starting against Michigan.
September 10th, 2018 at 11:35 AM ^
He has to get through Troy first this weekend. The way Frost runs that offense, I would be surprised if he made it through many games without an injury.
September 10th, 2018 at 11:37 AM ^
Indeed. I'll be shocked if he finishes the game vs UM, if he even plays.
September 10th, 2018 at 11:36 AM ^
He will be broke in half by the time they play Michigan.
September 10th, 2018 at 11:59 AM ^
So long as he out-hits the defenders hitting him, that's all that matters.
September 10th, 2018 at 11:38 AM ^
He has another game to get destroyed in Frost's offense. It's not like Frost will (can) protect him - it's an entire offense predicated on the QB's ability to run. He may well make it to - and through - the UM game intact, but at some point this season he's going down for the count. Unless Frost has the luck of Dantoryo, anyway...
