I think it was pretty apparent in the games he played last year and the production he had in the games he played that he is our best and most productive receiver. Until anyone shows us differently, he is our best WR.
August 25th, 2018 at 9:12 PM ^
He's not been our most productive receiver though. That's my point. He had a great first 3 games, but since you he was a freshman it's not exactly easy to simply project those numbers out for the entire year.
Perry and DPJ are more experienced than Black. Nico approached Black in games played last year as well.
In both route running and production, Perry has been our best Wide Receiver. Talk to anybody who knows and they'll tell you that the best WRs in camp have been Perry and Nico Collins. That's what we know.
I'm not making any kind of case that Black is overrated - he clearly looks like a stellar WR and missing him would be a blow. BUT, saying he's our best WR based on 2.8 games is certainly projection that overlooks the experience, production, and what players and coaches say about who has performed best this offseason.
August 25th, 2018 at 9:26 PM ^
Black passed the eye test as our best receiver, he ran the best routes, and had the best hands. He played against Florida, whose defense is no slouch. If you asked 100 people who our best receiver is, a majority of them would say Black.
August 25th, 2018 at 9:12 PM ^
Disagree. How many years have we had a guy put up big numbers in the first three or so games and then either disappear or drop off drastically? Just because he had a few good games doesn't solidify him there. I would argue Grant Perry is hands down our top receiver and the argument can certainly be made for DPJ as well.
August 25th, 2018 at 9:19 PM ^
Agreed. The people that are trying to hand wave this off are crazy. This is a terrible development. I think it's reasonable to remove a game from the 'W' column predictions for this.
We desperately need a passing game, and this guy was going to be a key piece of the 2018 campaign. This is huge loss.
August 25th, 2018 at 9:36 PM ^
Whoa. Remove a game in the win predictions for this? If Black is out, that's bad, but that doesn't necessarily take a win off the board. Especially for what is currently a rumor. Let's not get carried away.
August 25th, 2018 at 10:05 PM ^
If you can make the argument for both Grant Perry and DPJ, then ome of them can’t be the hands down top receiver

August 26th, 2018 at 2:20 AM ^
Saying it won’t break our season makes no sense. It could definitely break our season.
August 25th, 2018 at 8:32 PM ^
*sigh* Does it ever feel like we can't catch a damn break? I really hope this is just BS.
August 25th, 2018 at 9:01 PM ^
Definitely feels like we never catch a break. As for this *possible* injury, it sucks more for Tarik Black than it does for us or the team. We've got more receiving options (although he was definitely one of the best) but man, after last year I really feel for him if this true.
August 25th, 2018 at 8:35 PM ^
If it is true I feel awful for him, from what we have seen from him he had all the talent.
August 25th, 2018 at 8:36 PM ^
Heard the same thing. Ugh.
August 25th, 2018 at 8:39 PM ^
On the positive side who would have guessed the reciever from that class we'd get a 5th year from would be Black? Amirite?
This sucks.
August 25th, 2018 at 8:39 PM ^
Some dark humor: Yoder desperately trying to get in on the story.
August 25th, 2018 at 8:41 PM ^
Surprised Yoder hasn't already seen this on the 247 forums. That's clearly where he gets most of his legitimate information.
August 25th, 2018 at 11:16 PM ^
I hope no one at Michigan gives that douche media credentials.
August 25th, 2018 at 8:40 PM ^
That's a bummer man, was looking forward to our WR's destroying faces and they still will, just a man short.
August 25th, 2018 at 8:44 PM ^
Fuckin serious!!!! Damn I feel bad for him. Fuck
August 25th, 2018 at 8:49 PM ^
Oliver and nico time
August 25th, 2018 at 8:50 PM ^
Reggie Bell is going to have to play. Ambry Thomas to get more run at WR too.
UM had options.
August 25th, 2018 at 8:55 PM ^
*Ronnie
August 25th, 2018 at 9:03 PM ^
Oops. I don’t know where I got Reggie from.
August 25th, 2018 at 8:56 PM ^
We did. I'm not super-concerned that Crawford transferred, but it's not great that we're getting into our WR depth before the season starts, if that's what is happening.
August 25th, 2018 at 8:50 PM ^
Get well soon Tarik, if the rumors are true. For his sake, I hope he doesn’t go the same way of Drake Harris.
August 25th, 2018 at 8:54 PM ^
If so, the difference would be that Black actually showed how good he was on the field at UM. Would make it that much more painful to watch.
August 25th, 2018 at 8:51 PM ^
It's certainly bad news if Black is indeed severely injured, but we've heard of no other severe injuries, and despite what some myopic posters might say, (THEY PLAY A FULL CONTACT GAME EVERY WEEK YOU IDIOT!!! WHAT IS ONE EXTRA SCRIMMAGE GONNA CHANGE). Getting out of camp with one or no major injuries is good for a tough camp.
August 25th, 2018 at 8:51 PM ^
Hope it’s not true, but if it is, next man up. There’s still plenty of talent that can catch the ball. Perry, DPJ, Collins and Martin need to nut the fuck up.
August 25th, 2018 at 8:52 PM ^
Please God tell me it was just a cramp that had him on the cart...
August 25th, 2018 at 8:53 PM ^
If he was really seen on a cart, that's almost certainly not for a cramp. Guys can get sideline treatment for cramps and walk them off. A cart is generally not good, though sometimes results aren't known until later.
Also, I wouldn't be surprised if carts were used cautiously, whenever there was a chance they were needed. Doesn't necessarily mean this rumored cart-use was just being cautious, but I don't think the team wants a situation where Grant Newsome is walking off the field on his own anymore.
August 25th, 2018 at 8:57 PM ^
IF he was seen on a cart (which, at this point, is still only a rumor), probably the best we can hope for is a sprain. However, if it is only a sprain, but the pain was severe enough to require a cart, he still might miss the ND game or more.
August 25th, 2018 at 8:54 PM ^
Fuck!!
August 25th, 2018 at 8:58 PM ^
Sam has stated that he hasn't heard anything definitive. It sounds like the rumors are pure speculation based on what people have seen. It sounds like Nico has been the best WR on the team in camp, so this may be a situa where our depth will conpletel mitigate an injury like this.
August 25th, 2018 at 9:01 PM ^
Is that Sam speaking behind a firewall? He'd probably be the guy with the best chance to hear first.
Collins got a lot of talk, but I haven't heard chatter that suggests he's been the best in camp, just that he's drawn chatter. But if you're on a subscription service where that sort of info is leaking out you may be better informed than me.
August 25th, 2018 at 9:08 PM ^
Perry and Collins have been getting tons of praise.
August 25th, 2018 at 9:03 PM ^
Wait so is Sam not sure whether he's injured or is he sure got injured but not sure about the severity?
August 25th, 2018 at 9:05 PM ^
Not sure about the severity.
August 25th, 2018 at 9:03 PM ^
Good to hear about Collins, wonder why UMBIG11 didn't have him slated as a starter in his depth chart preview if that is the case.
August 25th, 2018 at 9:09 PM ^
Maybe pushing from behind since he didn't play as much last year. It's one thing to do it in practice, probably would need to show it in a game to overtake DPJ or Tarik, though they likely would have all gotten plenty of snaps.
Sounds like he'll have his opportunity now though. Hopefully Black's injury isn't too serious and we can see all 3 of them on the field soon.
August 25th, 2018 at 9:11 PM ^
It's hard to believe that Sam wouldn't immediately know if a starter suffered a serious injury.
August 25th, 2018 at 9:16 PM ^
Because even the player doesn't know the severity of the injury immediately after it happens. MRIs exist for a reason.
August 25th, 2018 at 9:20 PM ^
Sam doesn't disclose injuries as per his rule (unless the team/his source is okay with the disclosure; hint: they're not). With the internet/social media, any such disclosures would travel fast.
August 25th, 2018 at 9:00 PM ^
If he’s hurt that doesn’t exactly mean he’s out for the year.
August 25th, 2018 at 9:02 PM ^
There's no way (unless catastrophic) would we know that he is out for the season. Being put on the cart can mean many things. Sometimes its used as a precautionary measure
August 25th, 2018 at 9:09 PM ^
After reading what Sam posted it sounds like Tarik might be hurt. Not the same injury to the same foot as last year. But they don’t know the severity of the injury yet. That’s how it read to to me at least.
August 25th, 2018 at 9:09 PM ^
I'm in a Facebook Michigan fan group and Sean McKeon's mom just posted that they don't know whether he's injured or not. It will be confirmed tomorrow.
August 25th, 2018 at 9:12 PM ^
What's her counterstrike handle?
August 25th, 2018 at 9:17 PM ^
Would it go against etiquette to post a screenshot of her comment? I honestly don't know.
August 25th, 2018 at 9:25 PM ^
Yes. Closed group, shouldn't be posted elsewhere.
August 25th, 2018 at 9:13 PM ^
That's a couple of steps away but that's a lot closer to the situation than the rest of us. Does confirm that something is up, and tells us that the guys on the team don't know yet.
